the wind had certainly made the vocal rendition difficult for Montserrat but it also added some theatrical effects that made her more acting than usual and the voice was superb .God bless the wind ha ha
My very favorite opera, and no one sings it like Montserrat Caballe. Her voise was like no other, and she always makes it look like singing Norma and any part she sang look easy and effortless.
My very favorite opera, and no one sings it like Montserrat Caballe. Her voise was like no other, and she always makes it look like singing Norma and any part she sang look easy and effortless.
It's astounding how she took the risk of letting the lame veil blow across and into her mouth. A more risk-averse performer might have kept her hands farther from her face to prevent that. Amazing!
Callas, sutherland y caballe las insuperables Normas... aunque hay otras muy buenas tambien , escuchen a renatta scotto con la freni de adalgisa es muy buena...
Wonderful things she does with that silvery cloak of hers - and the wind too! You have the impressoin she's brushing of a tear from her eye at 0:39 - I quite see why - shes sublime! And what a great C - I know it's not a creamy Sutherland's C, but, actually, that's the way I like them - as Montserrat does them - a bit pushed, so you have an idea of the force behind it! And as soon as she lands it, she's finished. Quite untraditional and I love it!
my ex singing teacher went to this performance and he says that this night was very windy and the opera was to be cancelled but Caballe said NO and she sung like a Godess xxx
@Karanhir If it wasn' for t the wind If it wasn' for t the wind How amazing forms to steal an artist which is owner. I think if you didn't exist the world would sees better
okay, this defies belief. not only is she singing into the wind, which as a singer, I know is difficult, but she also has all of this costume swirling around her, and after the cadenza, when she is walking out, check out the 4" platform shoes she's wearing. How she did this, I can not even imagine, and to do it so perfectly, it's more than incredible. Brava Diva Assolutamente
I thought about the fan and whether it bothered her...if it did, she managed not to show it...and as a device, the wind swirling her veils is very effective, reflecting the character's inner agitation. She's never been one to move around much, and that stream of air created movement for her.
(She has always been so amazing...every role that I've heard her sing first, I've never been able to enjoy anyone else's performance in it as much.)
It's an outdoor opera festival. I don't imagine anyone ordered the wind! It works though - and Caballe is totally unfazed by it. What an incredible singer!
This is UNBELIEVABLE. I do not care what anybody says to the contrary, NO ONE can do a better Norma than Monserrat Caballe. NO ONE!!! Not even HER (you know who I mean.)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
WEll compared to some others, Scotto, etc.. it is better, but it is not better than Callas.. she rushes some phrases, and.. hangs onto notes too long in others.. I have the score, I have studied it carefully. Callas, muscial attention to detail is where she wins, and vocally she is superior too. Caballe, was not a convincing belle canto singer... she was stunning at Puccini, but I dont care for her Bellini.
I Love Montserrat & YOU ! whoever barks negative about HER . . .do not pay attention & do not waste your time...it's just human dirt cheap ENVOY ! ! ! better listen 1 more time this miracle...

Her phrasing is immaculate. Effortless dramatic coloratura intonation and exertion of power and finesses with her voice.
She's so dynamic with her C!

I agree, singing into the wind I've also done before & it it is NOT comfortable.
This is great coloratura under any condition
& I love her 4" platform shoes that I would not be happy to sing wearing!
