@RadioCityChristmas - "Debbie Allen's vision of the show was for it to be in the style of Footloose and Fame" - erm, this IS her choreography. At least it made sense during a gym class, unlike the confusing seizure-like dancing during "Out for Blood".
Hands was the director, Allen was the choreographer - both made some rubbish decisions that sealed Carrie's fate. At least the 2009 reading offers some hope - they just need to get the staging right!
While the choreography is not that good, there were two different visions of the show. Terry Hands' and Debbie Allen's. Hands' vision is the one you see in the video and what was presented on Broadway, in a greek tragedy style. Debbie Allen's vision of the show was for it to be in the style of Footloose and Fame. Take place in real places, with real outfits, what we want to see in the show. I think she was right all along. If Terry Hands was never hired the show would have been much better!
that looked tiring. i like the music and dancing but its a dumb idea for a musical...lol and im sure its better from down below. i think dancing looks dumb from up above
I love in.... one of the few songs that had somewhat GOOD choreography in my opinion... is there ANYWHERE that i can get the complete footage of the Broadway run (only act one am i correct?)...anyone?...... please?
Still, try, maybe you will have better luck. The related videos on this video has a link a video posted under CarrieTheMusicalcom of "Eve was Weak" and that was where I original found out about the site. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. I don't know what happened
I used to be able to access a site Carrie The Musical (.com no spaces) and it had it there, but last time I tried(a few weeks ago) it came up with a 404 message and today I tried and it now comes up with website suggestions
The "In" from the recent workshop is somewhere and it is absolutely amazing. Sue sings first, than Chris, and the boys are in the number, the harmonies are fantastic
I agree mostly. I think the dancing is a little too peppy for a horror musical. There needs to be choreography, but perhaps more exercise oriented instead of dance. I really hope it gets revived. This show has SO much potential.
This scene is in my opinion evidence of one of the things that really hurt this musical... While I really like the song... The lyrics really are a good way to open the show, really gets the mentality of most high school girls across... The dancing is too much... This is a dramatic horror musical... There was way too much dance... It's not Fame... It's Carrie... Who's idea was it to hire Debbie Allen? I really think the dancing (along with other things) was a downfall with the show
Wow this is actually good from what i heard. i love the choreography in it. too bad it flopped i would have love to see this. but i hear there is gonna be a revivle in west end so hopefully it works out!!
so i heard from somewhere that there are rummors that the there are soon going to be workshops for a revival of carrie in the west end, can anyone conform that?
While I have no real evidence to back up my opinion, I would seriously doubt this. I mean, the composing team doesn't even include "Carrie" in their bios and theatrical rights aren't available to ANYONE. It seems to have been swept pretty cleanly under the rug.
Well actually it is more than likely going to be revived on broadway... And it isn't swept under the rug really... If you buy the special edition DVD of Carrie (the 70's one... the good one lol) they even have a 10 minute bonus feature about the musical interviewing Michael Gore and Betty Buckley... Sadly they have no footage from it... And Michael talks about it as if he's still proud of it
they aren't going to do a revival on the west end, but they did do a reading in november to revive it on broadway, and the reading went well but changes to the show are being heavily kept secret
This score for this show is tremendously catchy. I really hope that in the next few years someone can put in a hope of reviving the show, I really think it could do well with some heavy tweaking here and there.
I was lucky to see this on Broadway, and previews in London. This scene looked a little better in person. Remember that this was coming out on the heels of Fame (same writers), so this was very much the style. For a great re-cap, read the book "Not Since Carrie" which is a book about Broadway bombs.
oh im sooo jealous u got 2 see it. so in ur opinion having seen it do u think it was ahead of its time in the respect that it tries 2 blend different styles of music 2gether within the show(which is pretty commonplace now) or was it really the car crash the critics made it out 2 b? personally aside from the dodgy costumes n scenery most of the music really stands out well, the rest just needs tweaking here n there(out for blood for example) wat d,ya think people?
It did not seem ahead of it's time in as much that it seemed disjointed. The music seemed very much an element of the 80s and it still seems very dated today. The 'highs' of Carrie, mostly the work of Betty Buckley, were thrilling and moving. The 'lows' were pretty awful, especially the rock music. The whole tone was off...Carrie used her powers in 'cutsie' ways and the setting seemed to be in another world. Every performance I saw got standing ovations AND loud boos and hisses.
You must be a little mistaken - Carrie previewed in Strattford upon Avon (UK) at the RSC -it then moved to New York and then closed. It did not preview in London.
that is odd....I could of sworn we were in London, but you did get me going through all the old theater ticket stubs and mementos...and you are right....thanks for the walk down memory lane.
you can tell debbie allen did the choreography because frankly she isnt that great, if you watch "Fame: The TV Series" you can see the similarities between her choreo there and in Carrie
i think the choreography is of its time def fixed in the 80's,but yeah are a lot of similarities between this and FAME,im thinking of i can do anything better than u can dats on the FAME album and if u watch it on here they are v.v.similiar dance-wise. but hey ho Debbie Allen wouldnt b d 1st choreographer 2 re-use her choreography. Are u listening Arlene Phillips? lol!
this isnt the only known recording, and its not from broadway this is the england version you can tell from the pyramid they made, also they whole show is recorded and can easily be watched on any good site
Actually, you are correct that this isn't the only know filming of this show. However this footage is from the broadway production and is the only known footage of the show in it's broadway run, besides the promotional reels.
This is from the Broadway production. The audio matches up perfectly with the closing night soundboard. Also, in the Stratford run, when Carrie comes on at the end, she does the exercises at her own pace upstage. Here she's not.
i wonder this myself like all the time, if you listen to any song the audience cheer when the song finishes, but the press hated it so automaticly other people hated it
i'm a singer and dancer...and believe me...something like this would not be easy to do. we had a similar dance and song to do a while ago and it was hard to dance and sing it at the same time.
@jetset59 But then I heard that he said it was a disaster of a musical. There is a similarity b/w Stephen King's "Carrie" and "Carrie the Musical" is that they are very different than what you would expect.
This is definity the best opening of this play I seen on youtube, of course the quality not up to par, but thats would be too perfect lol. I do like the vintage look this gives off, like it was filmed in the 70s LOL.
Wow, the choreography changed a lot from the Stratford production - it actually got harder which I hadn't thought possible. Its a wonder any of these dancers had knees left after this. Charlotte is at her prime here - she's incredible.
There's a fansite that youcan pretty much download the Soundboard recording from either the first or last (judging from the loud enthustatic applause it had to be one of those) from the Carrie fansite. Google search like "Music from Carrie" and it's one of the first that pop up! You can also listen to the rest of it too.
I know!!! I can't imagine anyone being able to do that for 8 performances a week, every week for nearly every ensemble song too! Well..they only had to do it for what 20 performances atleast LOL!
This is so embarrassing. All of those dancers working their assess off eight times a week for this schlock. I never would have thought that technology would one day allow me to go back in time as a ghost and float above the stage and actually see a number from ... CARRIE THE MUSICAL!!! Thank you for posting this.
I just finished watching the bootleg from the Stratford production. I thought that the first act was really good, but it was in Act 2 when everything started going to hell. I was horrified at the song "Out For Blood".
Unfortunately, the second Act of broadway Carrie seems to have been lost forever, except for a handful of people who say they have it and arent sharing. If you look hard enough though, you can find whole copiers of the Stratford show...i looked around for about a week and found a man online who was selling a copy for $20.
Yes I have the scene too, but I was on a website not long ago and there was a guy who's father worked on the broadway show, and was given a tape on closing night with the whole show recorded. It was a different version than the above one. Filmed from the lower balcony, off to the left. (Before you say it, It wasnt the stratford one). Betty Buckley was in it (so he claims). I emailed him, but he never replied :(
This musical is really for fans of the book and film. Unless you have an understanding of the both of them, then you won't get this musical. That's also what brought it down, it wasn't descriptive enough, just very raw, bt still entertaining.
Actually (Not meaning to contradict you), the musical was better received by those who had not read the book or seen the film, mostly non-theater goers. These people went wild over "Carrie"s craziness and it's out-there special effects, and did not seem to care for it's awful score and horrible book and lyrics.

I think the song "I remember how those boys could dance" is simply amazing. to me it's an operatic duel between carrie and her mother. For someone like myself, who saw the show, It is really the best scene.
