eugh imagine stepping on those probably kill bout 23 with one foot step and that yucky sound (CRUNCH) then you have all this CICADA flesh on yur shoes
i watched this and thought you had quite a mess of them, and then you panned down to what you were walking on. that's a full blown plague! i love their sound, though. the trees i have around my house build up with them every spring and summer, but certainly not in those numbers.
it must stink really bad around the base of that tree, I ran over a huge pile of them like the ones at 00:40 with the lawmower and a huge wiff of stink filled the air.
Just gather a whole bunch up by the bucket load, get a fryer bin for of hot oil going, drop in a french fry rack, plop them in, and there you have your own episode of "Bizzare Foods" hehe! Thats a Buffet fit for a African Tribe there. lol! Cant believe they emerge out of their skins during the day, but way down here they emerge at night.
I'm moving to Nashville in August, this is my first time learning about these things. How long does the season last & is it just in heavily wooded areas?
these things are all over my front and back yard,no-scratch that,THEY'RE ALL OVER MY GODDAMN CITY!
are these things supposed to come to iowa?right now they're all over the place in keokuk!!!i can't walk through my own damn front yard without stepping on one!
That's what my yard looks like right now. They're all over. They really like the small trees. If you shake one, they all fly off at once. One flew and hit me in the lip. I was just glad it didn't fly down my throat.
They're all over my yard right now. I remember the last time they came. I was 5 years old. And I hated it! Now I have to experience it all over again! T^T
I remember when I was really young, about 6 or 7. I'd stand in the yard with a tennis racquet and swing at them as they flew by for mere entertainment. Now I find myself sprinting to my car in horror every damn time I walk out the door.
Omg....thats awesome. That's what I've been doing lately. Hell, I've even asked my g/f to go get smokes or whatever a few times because I have a weird phobia with insects and she actually loves them. hahaha You've never seen someone run like i do when there's all those cicadas around.
Oh there's no such thing as a "weird phobia with insects". I'm pretty sure that's just normal to be freaked out by them. At least she's willing to run to the store for you, though...it's too hot out to sprint to your car anyway!
@TheMr92021 Cicadas do some damage to the tips of tree branches when they lay their eggs in, but not enough to significantly harm the tree. When the tips fall down, the larvae bury into the ground to feed on the tree sap for 17 or 13 years, so they need it alive.
The periodical cicadas like these don't live as far west as California.
OMG! I was pregnant the summer of 1998 and never knew what those things were, when I was about 7.5months preggo I fell on the ground and they were all on me (or I was just in panic mode) and winded up in Vandy. Next day I quit my job headed to my home town in Alabama for the next 3 weeks or so, I came back. My son was born that July and has a birth mark on his thigh that everyone says looks just like a cicada! Not looking forward to this for you TN folks..good thing I moved a few years ago!
I'm surprised to see that many still emerging while the cassini are already in chorus. Usually once the chorus begins there are very few left in the ground.
These little guys are pretty cool... I remember collecting their cast-off skins as a kid and then having the husks battle and destroy each other... lol I haven't seen these in years, though, but wow... This sure is a lot!
they are innofensive by humans ....only considerated like agricultural plague but only in tree orchards...they deposit their eggs in the wood and broken tree branches, wound where disease can cause tree, it´s a secundary effect.
damn me and my friends killed so many of these things back when they were in va lmao. we would also shake small trees and all of them would come swarming out of the branches and we would run away hahaha
@celtik916 they don't sting, but they do make a very annoying buzzing, they are like the orchestra of the insects, the thing you'll have to deal with is when they die, it'll be a mass murder, it'll be a holocaust of cicadas EVERYWHERE when they drop dead on the ground
i like cicadas and after seeing this video i have to say from where i live mi HOLY SHIT THAT IS A LOT OF CICADAS i never seen so many all at ounce on the tree and ground WOOOOOW
The last time this happened in PR, I remember me and my friends would throw footballs and basketballs into some big trees and a few hundred cicada's would fly out at us, and we would start swinging at them with tennis rackets and baseball bats... Good times =). I want another cicada invasion!
Wow! We had a 17 year cicada emergence here in PA a few years ago, but it wasn't that extreme. There were cicada's and shells all over in spots, but not to the point the ground was completely covered like that. At least it's only for a short time every 17 years, so I find it pretty neat. You'd think that many underground would kill the tree they are feeding off of.
i remember they came back around about 6 yrs ago in MD and i was in school at the time. People would always sneak these things into other peoples bags and then when they went to class and opened them they came flying out. lol the teachers weren't very amused
Ahh 2003, when I was in 3rd grade...good times! I thought they were really evil bees and then the school made an announcement that they're "friendly bees" and they don't harm. GOOD TIMES!!
It's amazing that these guys come out only 17 years, Exactly too. Also, their predators(most common) is Wasp and Arachnids usually come out every 5 or 3 years.(Considering 17 is a prime number :DD)
@thekitteninthetree They're harmless but they're really gross. I think they're ugly and there's far too many of them. I did not like them at all. Thankfully we don't have them in Florida.
@LadyASG Believe me, it's hard. Some people just ignore them and go about their business. You do have to sort of dive into your car real fast and not let one get trapped in there with you. They're very clumsy flyers. But they stay away from water, so just go dive in the pool.
When i was little i used to pick them up and ply with them... i was a weird kid. Now they scare the crap outta me.
