Burt Bacharach's voice is nowhere near to hers, but when he sings this song moves you to tears. when she sings it instead, it seems she's simply making technical exercise, or showing off how she's clean and smooth. Voice is not everything. This song is PURE FEELING, so if you're not disposed to put your soul completely in it, maybe you'd better not sing it at all...

Burt Bacharach used a 48 piece orchestra plus backing singers when he recorded Cilla Black's version. Whereas Rumer's version uses a 6 piece band (piano, guitar, drums, upright bass, vibes and flugelhorn as you see in the video), combined with her smooth voice, very effectively to me! I like this.

Very nice, but something missing. Years ago Cilla Black did this with Burt conducting - she was worked up intensely, and on interview said working with Bacharach was the hardest thing she had ever done in her career. Makes me think had Burt been in on this recording there would have been fireworks.

Not big on this version... Flat and without the emotion... as if she never met or knew of Alfie.. Cilla belts this song out with forceful beauty, and then pulls in within seconds... breaking your heart.. Cher does better as well, sounding raw and hurt.. like one of Alfie's women... Burt said himself the lyrics were the best ever and they have everything to do w/ the original film..Sorry, gave this a shot.. "Alfie" isn't for this lovely lady... too smooth...

I'm in the US but I visited England and watched both of those ladies on shows like Top of the Pops back then. I miss the genre mixing of radio from back then as well. Superb version - she has that lovely lazy style where the notes flow into each other. Very much a sixties sound if you listen to Dusty Springfield and some of Sandy Shaw they had a similar style and it's nice to hear this style of voice again which is really warm and sensual. Just my thoughts!!! Don't jump on me for making comparisons lol I just like that way of singing.

Great voice & a classic song. She’s a lovely girl too. There were several takes & they chose the best one. I know because I was on the session. But despite recording it over 10 weeks ago, I still haven’t been paid. Firstly, for doing the session I was offered less than I pay musicians to play on the uncommercial albums I make. It took 3 weeks to negotiate a reasonable fee. Contrary to record company's beliefs we musicians have the same bills as everyone else. Come on Atlantic – sort it out.
