what does the circuit actually look like? how does the computer "read" whether or not it is a 0 or a 1 and how/why would it reverse it in a "NOT" circuit. what is the point of a not circuit anyway? it seems completely pointless to me. If you input something to be 1, why would you want the output to be something different.
we can't actually make useful things with single gates but virtually anything can be constructed with them as building bloks. By the way, computer programming is just another(much faster) way of arranging these blocks.
