damn it's ugly. I would except more from Hyundai. Also I heard that the interior feels cheap from insideline and other car reviews. Besides it's not a family car.
@AlohaBiatch go test drive one for yourself, I'm going to get one as soon as the turbo comes out, very, very roomy interior, I'm 6' 3" and I fit in the back seat fine, no the interior is not cheap at all (except for the door handles, they seem a little flimsy), and personally, I think that stylistically it looks amazing
Please help me! So I'm wondering...how much of a difference is there with the turbo and regular? With this model I hear 0-60 is almost 8 seconds...does anyone know how 0-60 is with turbo?
@ItTastesGood a 140hp i4 turbocharged should be about 200hp and it does have a low curb weight so I'm guessing it's going to be in the mid 6.5 to 6.8 seconds.
@ItTastesGood the turbo version isnt out yet but i think it might shave off one or two seconds depending on what kind of turbo they use and how long the turbo lag is on the engine
@Lonehawk2k4 they are claiming the turbo is going to have between 201 and 212 hp and still getting 28/38mpg. Also they're retuning the suspension and only adding I think 150-200lbs. Should cut the 0-60 time down considerably. Oh and the turbo is going to have a twin scroll turbine so the turbo lag should be minimal
@wannabeRanger0321 dam ya i like turbos but that lag can be such a joykill i remember seeing on top gear they had the cogsworth impreza and the turbo lag on that thing was ridiculous
@recoilhurts it keeps the weight down. Doors are heavy and then all the added welding to the cars frame. Keeping it light means better mpg and power to weight ratio. Just test drove the naturally aspirated model today. Basically the car is trying to be a 2 door coupe but have a little bit more practicality. 3 doors is better then 2 doors in my opinion.
This COULD potentially be a nice car with a bigger engine and better handling...as for right now, people will either buy this based on looks or price.
@SinnerJ good choice. i have a forester myself. its basically a lifted impreza in compact suv form. so i dont know what you will be using it for, but if utility is high on your list, wait for the new generation forester, its a lot roomier and more offroad capable while also safer and more comfortable
sinnerJ dont be fooled... this piece of crap even with the turbo 2.0 has nothing on the evo... if you are not getting all wheel drive at least go for rear drive... but for gods sake not front drive. its no fun.
@tomasortega1 its the budget genesis coupe, if your such a stickler for rear wheel drive then pay a couple extra. and besides, the turbo is fine and quite faster.
I'm so torn when it comes to this thing. I love the looks, features, styling, MPG's but I do like just a lil more spunk. I've considered the lil CR-Z but not having a backseat just seems off, even though the orginal CR-X didn't have one either. I'm not totally sold on hybrids yet either. I wish they did just like a sportier version of it. Just stink the 2.0 Turbo that's in the Optima SX in that thing and release it to the masses!
Thanks for the honesty. Was way into the CR-Z whe I saw it. Loved the second generation CRX. The Veloster 's design is a little more appealing and the warranty wins, of course. Also, I'm 6'2" and prefer a sunroof, which you can't get on the CR-Z. The Veloster also comes with more standard options when you compare side-by-side. I won't be in the market until the end of the year anyway, so I want to drive the Subaru Empreza Crosstrek XV first and then decide.
why would they put this on sale whithout a more powerful engine option? just looking at it makes you wanna floor it. but its slow as hell when i test drove one. ill wait for the rumored turbo.
@Moe11032 Sorry but i dont have to prove anything to anybody an especially you.... I mean whats the point really.. showing you then what?? lol next time think about your comments an make use them wisely.. thanks =]
@Moe11032 Ok if you say so when ever you get an aston you will see there is no need to show off.. believe me an if you do think of showing off your probably a 16 year old kid just saying..
@SinnerJ bah, from what I've seen from Turbo Hyndais, sometimes you get the full power and sometimes you don't (overly conservative ECUs FTL). Get the Evo.
It's a great car. I actually tested one but alas I really had to be more practical and bought the Elantra Touring. Let me tell you what I got for what I paid is just incredible. However I must say that at times I'm a little disappointed that I didn't throw caution to the wind and get this one.
It is nice but you won't b happy to are under the car it doesn't have independent suspension in the back sucks but the looks its nice and u don't need yo roll the fender for deep dish rim... all I can say is its OK
I test drove one with the DCT - first gear engagement was very jerky and the engine is completely gutless, and I do mean completely, it would have done better with the 1.8 from the Elantra. The car also looks very odd in a parking lot with other cars, it's quirky and screams "kids car". Overall, a swing and a miss, for me at least.
This was a great review, I think the Veloster is really cool. I think it is a modern recreation of the three door coupe concept that Saturn had with the SC 1 and 2.
I just picked mine up, three days ago. It is the exact car in this video. I love it. It's well made, comfortable and quite responsive. The tech package works well and the Dimension stereo system is amazing (for a factory system). It's FUN to drive. Also, by our stopwatch, it does 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds, in sport mode. Not fast by any standard, but at least average for a normally aspirated 1.6 liter. This car is MILES ahead of the 4 cylinder Chevrolet I traded in. Well worth the $23k price.
@daveybay Uh oh, I stand corrected... This is a 6-speed manual - mine is the 6-speed, dual clutch semi-automatic. Is it possible the auto could be quicker than the manual? Hmmmm.
Offer the Veloster with a SUNROOF without LEATHER and I'll buy one. Of course you need a sunroof with leather to release the formaldehyde fumes. Stop manipulating consumers with packages.
@MsBob933933 it just adds convenience for those of us who dont often use the back seat, but when we do we want it to be easier to get in there than with a typical 2 door coupe. apparantly you think all 2 door coupes are "the dumbest car ever" and even more dangerous in a crash as there are zero rear doors as opposed to one here. all two door coupes have the larger front doors.
brain teaser. you have two rear passengers to be dropped off..who get in first? who gets in second? simple, isnt it?
I respect the car and I love the design. Its a breath of fresh air, but to hate on the CRZ is just stupidity.
I own a CRZ (CVT, lame I know, but gets me from A to B) and I've been averaging 42.4 miles to a gallon, MIXED driving.
Do some research and you'll find that the EPA had the CRZ in NORMAL mode not ECO. Jesus, it doesnt take a genius to realize that in ECO mode, it'll sip gas significantly less.
That said, I love the Veloster, almost regret buying the CRZ...but hey, almost.
@medz91xc as i stated previously, the veloster DCT was also tested with its active eco OFF. persoanlly i much preferred the manual transmission and i get over 40 mpg in suburban driving.
there are 2 things that would have gotten me to take the crz seriously. 1) a useable back seat and 2) a regular ICE engine, which would have cut weight and more importantly costs. hybric tech is fine, but it wasnt applied well in the crz.
I see what youre saying, but the first generation CRZ is just a test run by Honda. Its a measuring stick as to how well Hyundai, Mazda, and even GM with their Chevy Sonic will do against it.
Honda is only selling 5000 units to the U.S per year, money is not an issue since their main market for the CRZ is in Japan. They just want to see how people and other car makers will react to it. And with the emergence of all these eco subcompacts in just a year, Honda has what they need
@medz91xc sorry, you are wrong. my brother in law works for honda. they had every expectation of the car doing better. it costs them alot of money to make this car n. american compatible. they dont spend that much just to gauge the market.
if Honda is only selling 5000 units, then answer this:
how were 5,289 CRZ's sold in the U.S. in only 5 months in 2010?
how have 10,461 units been sold in the U.S. this year through a 10 month period?
Ahh I am mistaken then... I shouldnt believe everything said on an online Honda forum then lol
But I cannot imagine it would cost them MORE money to take out the rear seats and installing the CVT transmission that they already have on an Insight, as a N. American option, and slotting it in the CRZ...
That just doesnt make sense as Honda is neck and neck with Toyota with quarterly market profit (I.E Honda doesnt lose money/throw it away to please the U.S.).
Ive never test drove the Veloster, but my CRZ is blue too! But sadly, due to the fact that my fiance cannot drive a manual, I have the CVT :( one day ill be able to get another car and it'll have 3 pedals :)
@roxybuddychanel I know that other auto makers have had the same problem. Hopefully, they can get more made quickly so that the rest of us can go take a test drive soon. I want to try one out for myself.
I like it... it was suppose to compete with a Mini, but honestly, a mini is way, way better in the steering, handling, braking feel. But this is their first try... will be interesting to see what happens with the turbo model. I will say... a fully spec'ed veloster is about the same cost as my BASE mini.... hummm....
@biscuitninja i considered the mini, but for $18,100, i got a car that has what i consider a nicer interior including a 7 inch touch screen, more room, better mileage, handles nicely, has better utility, a better warranty, and by far better expected reliability. i also love the looks of the veloster. i do like the mini and it is a good handler.however, the interior is quite a turnoff for me.
also, in the latest long term dependability study (2011) Mini is now dead last.
@egolol100 I would get the Juke...has a superior engine, a sophisiticated torque-vectoring AWD system, plus it sits higher off the ground like a small CUV, plus the Juke will retain its value better down the road, being a Nissan.
In this day an age imo you guys should do a fuel economy test as well to really get the full picture of the up's and downs of owning fast cars or the benefit of owning some slower cars to your wallet.
The thing is that tis car is rubbich to drive from whot i have heard from real car shows. Been a Hyundai, you know it will be bad at everything else to
You apparently know nothing about the quality Hyundai is putting out in their cars recently.
I know way too many people who've traded in their German luxuries for Hyundai such as the Genesis Sedan and are extremely satisfied with their decision.
Genesis Coupe is also a highly respected among the performance/tuner market as well.
2.0T + $5K in turbo kit upgrades people are pushing 350 - 450 HP range.
i saw this car in silver on the road today and looks 10x better in person. even in a rich area with ferraris, aston martins rolling around, this car still stood out. even as slow as this car is i know it will sell well just from the first glance i got of it. RIP honda crz
Please stop using Autocar's roadtest background music. No, they didn't compose it, or have the rights to it, but they've been using it for years. It just seems a bit tacky. Autocar does some great things in regards to their road tests and a lot can be learned from them, but using the same music they do isn't one of them. It just takes away from your video for anyone who's an avid Autocar viewer.
The CR-Z, I hear, is not at all respected by the JDM community. It's neither a very good hybrid nor a very good sports car. It just sits in the middle and compromises. It's fun, sure, but nothing spectacular.
Aside from styling and 1 door less, is this Veloster really any different from the Accent hatchback? I really like this Veloster, but knowing it has the same engine and transmissions at the Accent with a significantly higher price tag, makes me wonder if I should save a couple thousand and get the Accent hatch instead.
@palebeachbum i traded my 2012 accent for the veloster. the veloster has a nicer interior, the manual transmission has shorter throws and is smoother. the base model veloster also includes several things that the accent doesnt. the veloster is more fun to drive because it handles considerably better. i really liked my accent and imo it beats the other subcompacts on the market. if the style and handling of the veloster dont speak to you id say the accent is a great choice
the point of this car was not to be fast. it has amazing agility, which may trump the need for speed here. i personally think it's a great value for all the stuff you get with it, and most cars like this aren't very practictal, but the veloster actually is.
even the honda friends i have wish honda would have made this car....understand, my friends are mature enough to be honest about it.
but, all the hyundai haters that come on here are funny....to, you guys, go grab some duct tape from your moms kitchen, go outside and tape up that fart can on your 1996 honda civic before it falls onto the road.
Dumbest name! Someone, who probably didn't speak English too well, forgot a syllable...Front end looks like it needs a few more revisions! Rear end is much better. When will these car makers realize that you have to design the WHOLE car...ie Audi, BMW, Porsche, etc....
So i saw one in a parking lot the other day,Its is much nice live! Was pretty impressed, Bigger inside than I thought, Cant wait for a turbo, Will buy one then
@SteviePeeOutDoorLife bigger in the inside? bigger than what? I'm 6'1" and with the seat in the fully up position my head was an inch and a half outside the car, it had he sunroof open. And in the back my head was crumpled against the rear windscreen and if i moved it forwards the side window was 3 inches below my ees, so i could only see the asses of people
And yet they comlain that the buick verano is slow while pulling out the the same numbers and being far less spoty than this. But either way, better than some GAY civic.
@stallface yes, but no one goes on and on about how modern, crisp and innovative a porsche is. Actually, I think that the Panamera is one of the ugliest cars ever
@bartmatton And for some reason my comments are gone but not gonna repost lol But that was my point! How can you get mad at hyundai for making cars but yet GM and Chrysler was making shitty cars for years and they are acceptable? I just don't understand why so many people don't like Hyundai's (especially if you haven't own newer ones). And this whole thing about copying other automobiles..did we forget that every car in the 80s/90s had the same BOX cut out? lol so who was copying who then?
That thing is soooooo fucking ugly! ugh.

Dumbest car ever:
1) Normal people look behind them before getting out streetside.
2) Dangerous if you need to get out quickly in an emergency (like the fucking car's flipped or on fire or whatever)
3) If there are 2 in the back and you're driverside, what is this - you have to climb over the other person to get out if you're getting dropped off??
4) Driver side door now = twice the extension into the street = more dangerous.
Don't design something and then not test it in real life.

Do some research and you'll find that the EPA had the CRZ in NORMAL mode not ECO. Jesus, it doesnt take a genius to realize that in ECO mode, it'll sip gas significantly less.
That said, I love the Veloster, almost regret buying the CRZ...but hey, almost.
medz91xc 4 months ago 16
@medz91xc as i stated previously, the veloster DCT was also tested with its active eco OFF. persoanlly i much preferred the manual transmission and i get over 40 mpg in suburban driving.
there are 2 things that would have gotten me to take the crz seriously. 1) a useable back seat and 2) a regular ICE engine, which would have cut weight and more importantly costs. hybric tech is fine, but it wasnt applied well in the crz.
roxybuddychanel 4 months ago
@roxybuddychanel
And with the emergence of all these eco subcompacts in just a year, Honda has what they need
medz91xc 4 months ago
@medz91xc sorry, you are wrong. my brother in law works for honda. they had every expectation of the car doing better. it costs them alot of money to make this car n. american compatible. they dont spend that much just to gauge the market.
if Honda is only selling 5000 units, then answer this:
how were 5,289 CRZ's sold in the U.S. in only 5 months in 2010?
how have 10,461 units been sold in the U.S. this year through a 10 month period?
roxybuddychanel 4 months ago
@roxybuddychanel
Ahh I am mistaken then... I shouldnt believe everything said on an online Honda forum then lol
But I cannot imagine it would cost them MORE money to take out the rear seats and installing the CVT transmission that they already have on an Insight, as a N. American option, and slotting it in the CRZ...
That just doesnt make sense as Honda is neck and neck with Toyota with quarterly market profit (I.E Honda doesnt lose money/throw it away to please the U.S.).
medz91xc 4 months ago
@medz91xc U should love youre CR-Z. I tried the Veloster the handling is crap. Mines the CR-Z 6-spd Manual though...... In Blue... whats yours?
doraemon8061 3 months ago
@doraemon8061
Ive never test drove the Veloster, but my CRZ is blue too! But sadly, due to the fact that my fiance cannot drive a manual, I have the CVT :( one day ill be able to get another car and it'll have 3 pedals :)
medz91xc 3 months ago
@medz91xc Well, hope u like your car..... ;) I love mine though........ The manual still is best in the CR-Z
doraemon8061 3 months ago
@medz91xc if you want economy buy a diesel, you can do ~65mpg in city with a 1,4L diesel, actually you can do more with a 1.2tdi!
i know you dont have much diesel options in u.s but it is more reasonable to buy a diesel if you want economy.
pompikto 2 months ago
Looks like it's going to be another big seller for Hyundai. I can't wait to see one drive through my neighborhood.
mikerules666 4 months ago
@mikerules666 yep. they sold just under 4,000 units in october and they havent been able to produce as many as they need.
roxybuddychanel 4 months ago
@roxybuddychanel I know that other auto makers have had the same problem. Hopefully, they can get more made quickly so that the rest of us can go take a test drive soon. I want to try one out for myself.
mikerules666 4 months ago
If they really want to put all these specs out, they should wait until the turbocharged model comes out next year.

rusaldinho 4 months ago
I like it... it was suppose to compete with a Mini, but honestly, a mini is way, way better in the steering, handling, braking feel. But this is their first try... will be interesting to see what happens with the turbo model. I will say... a fully spec'ed veloster is about the same cost as my BASE mini.... hummm....
biscuitninja 4 months ago
@biscuitninja i considered the mini, but for $18,100, i got a car that has what i consider a nicer interior including a 7 inch touch screen, more room, better mileage, handles nicely, has better utility, a better warranty, and by far better expected reliability. i also love the looks of the veloster. i do like the mini and it is a good handler.however, the interior is quite a turnoff for me.
also, in the latest long term dependability study (2011) Mini is now dead last.

egolol100 4 months ago
@egolol100 get neither. ford focus gogogogogo
BlueAvenue22 4 months ago
@egolol100 I would get the Juke...has a superior engine, a sophisiticated torque-vectoring AWD system, plus it sits higher off the ground like a small CUV, plus the Juke will retain its value better down the road, being a Nissan.
tom11zz884 3 months ago
Hyundai's version of the Nissan Juke...without the superior engine or AWD system...lol
tom11zz884 4 months ago
@tom11zz884 Hyundai's version of the Nissan Juke...with far superior exterior and interior design.
Sorry but the Nissan Juke looks like a piece of shit.
xfamenx 3 months ago
@xfamenx Both look like shit..lol
But the Juke will be more fun to drive i suspect..especially in AWD guise
tom11zz884 2 months ago
In this day an age imo you guys should do a fuel economy test as well to really get the full picture of the up's and downs of owning fast cars or the benefit of owning some slower cars to your wallet.
jimmmyz169 4 months ago
Turbocharged engine, please!! But its a nice overall package. Hyundai has balls to build a car like this. Its a really risky move from them.

The thing is that tis car is rubbich to drive from whot i have heard from real car shows. Been a Hyundai, you know it will be bad at everything else to

@NasnasFilms

They should make an even sportier trim level called the Veloster-Raptor :p
tbirdsport302 4 months ago
Aside from styling and 1 door less, is this Veloster really any different from the Accent hatchback? I really like this Veloster, but knowing it has the same engine and transmissions at the Accent with a significantly higher price tag, makes me wonder if I should save a couple thousand and get the Accent hatch instead.
palebeachbum 4 months ago
@palebeachbum i traded my 2012 accent for the veloster. the veloster has a nicer interior, the manual transmission has shorter throws and is smoother. the base model veloster also includes several things that the accent doesnt. the veloster is more fun to drive because it handles considerably better. i really liked my accent and imo it beats the other subcompacts on the market. if the style and handling of the veloster dont speak to you id say the accent is a great choice
roxybuddychanel 4 months ago
the point of this car was not to be fast. it has amazing agility, which may trump the need for speed here. i personally think it's a great value for all the stuff you get with it, and most cars like this aren't very practictal, but the veloster actually is.
This is what the CR-Z should've been!
TheBadBuffalo 4 months ago 26
@shaggyusm26 somebody had to. honda sure wasnt willing to.
they did give us the new civic, which i think is being used by the federal witness protection program....
........they put you into the new civic, and nobody will ever notice you again.

but, all the hyundai haters that come on here are funny....to, you guys, go grab some duct tape from your moms kitchen, go outside and tape up that fart can on your 1996 honda civic before it falls onto the road.

Was pretty impressed, Bigger inside than I thought, Cant wait for a turbo, Will buy one then
SteviePeeOutDoorLife 4 months ago
@SteviePeeOutDoorLife bigger in the inside? bigger than what? I'm 6'1" and with the seat in the fully up position my head was an inch and a half outside the car, it had he sunroof open. And in the back my head was crumpled against the rear windscreen and if i moved it forwards the side window was 3 inches below my ees, so i could only see the asses of people
