  • Hi claire me again lol i have planted my peas just like you have and they have grown very well they have about 5 lil leaves on them when can they be transplanted in there final home?. and the other thing was ive built two planters for my veg and they are just filled with multi porpose compost will that be ok for my veg to grow in. Am a bit unsure of all this as my first time? x

  • @jazzieginger The peas can be planted into their final place when they're about 4 - 5 inches tall. As long as you're not going to get really hard frost then they can go out. I now plant mine directly in the soil in March/April time, and they grow just as well. With the planters, if you can find some stones, small to medium size and some plain soil, mix them together. It just makes the compost a bit more robust and the stones aid drainage.

  • What is the difference between peas and mongetout?

  • @neild1 Mangetout are "flat peas". Basically you don't let the peas inside the pod develop, and pick whilst they are still flat. Peas you let swell, and then pick. You eat the whole mangetout, and only the peas inside when growing peas.

  • Hi Claire... i am new to growing. i am 14 and so interested in growing my own food. problem is i dont have a greenhouse, i only have a conservatry. do you think that if i grow in there it will have the same affect as a greenhouse (and we dont use the conservartry so its coldish and warm when suns out)

  • The conservatory will do just fine. Make sure that the plants aren't directly above a radiator. You will have to turn the pot round every few days only when the seedlings are coming up, otherwise they will lean towards the light and get leggy. Once they are established then they'll be fine. Have a great year. Let me know how you get on. Claire

  • Hi Claire So you stick to one maincrop variety right through the season -

didn't know what type to buy, there are so many Peas !

  • The Peas I'm using this year are called "Onward". If you get a glut of peas it doesn't matter as they freeze. You can plant in succession if you like, (every month sow another row).

  • "Onward" and upward then hopefully - got a bit of a problem with pet rabbit escaping at the moment , better get it sorted before they come up - Kids !

  • Hopefully yes. Rabbits are a problem as they burrow. Keep them confined, the rabbits not the children.

  • ... LOL . You'Ve probably told us already but do you buy special seed compost or will the cheap multi purpose stuff do ?

  • I buy Homebase multi purpose compost. Nothing fancy, I got 3 120lt bags this year, it should last me. So far I've used 2.

  • Hi Claire

I just discovered gardening and you! So its great timing. I planted 6 runner beans indoors on the 8th March and only 1 has come up trumps. In fact its already over 15cm longs with 3 small leaves. Nothing whatsoever from the other 5 though. What have I done wrong?

  • It's a bit early for planting runner beans even inside. they can't go outside until June 1st (see video 39) so if planting inside plant mid April onwards (see video 20). They don't like being too damp otherwise the seed will rot so watch how much you water them. If they start to get too tall put a stick in for them to climb up.
