Great idea to optimise the fuel amount, rate of burn. I have had a smaller kelly kettle for a few years now, and I tend to use the whole area of the base for the fire, as I like to do a quick boil. I will definitely try this out, and see if the boil time is reduced. Thanks for uploading. Happy trails.
@kennosen I have a video showing how I use the kettle without the base, just the twig holder. I used 2 trekker kettles side by side. I had the idea to use the twig basket/holder before I purchased the kettle. I saw videos of the kettle and how burning twigs fall out when the kettle is removed from it's base. The small amount of wood in the basket boils the 6 cups in my larrge kettle and keeps the coals managable when the kettle is removed.
@zellph yeah, I'm always using pine, and the odd cone and though it burns hot and fast, does not last long. I've never thought to try some of my house wood burner's hardwood stash, as you know, oak burns hot and lasts a lot longer than pine. Looking forward to trying a basket holder, and new levels of kelly kettle fire control. You have given me inspiration to try another way to boil my brew more efficiently. Thanks again.
Thank you. It is effective to dampen the flame and increase burn time. How long is the burn time approximately with a full vertical load and which model are you showing?
I just ordered the Ghillie kettle. Same design and maker but it has a cap over the spout with a built in whistle to let you know when the water boils.
@tybeejeffro You got a great kettle, be careful not to push the whistle cap down too tight. I'll see if I can get a link to a youtube video that shows the whistle blowing off uder great pressure....................................Dan
Hey zellph, did you make the draft control? Did you buy it somewhere? Also the cover over the water spout! great idea. We have been getting ash into our water. Great videos keep up the great work! Any help thanks. Larry
@MrMaddogg2010 I made the draft controll out of the top of a stainless steel salt shaker, punched a series of small 1/4" holes in a circular patern untill the center hole was formed. I can't remember what I used for the spout cover. I experience the ash in the spout also. My wife and I used our small kelly kettles over the past weekend. Using a wire basket to contain the twigs makes for an easy cleanup and removeal of kettle without the twigs falling every which way.
@hoz49 Yes, those are the ones I saved because of free fuel. It was in a moment of radical, outrageous joy, dan laughs out loud rolling on the floor. I use pages from a telephone book, very thin and burns really well, packs flat in backpack and weighs zilch, nada, pokito
@RallohE Thanks, I ordered the pot support for it and will be able to cook on top of the kettle to add to it's efficiency. My wife wantsa complete set up now that she has seen how well I've made it work, I shoulda known!!!! The stainless model is only $5.00 more than the aluminum one.

What did you use for the flu damper?
MrJoeyBoombotz 6 months ago
@MrJoeyBoombotz I used the top of a stainless steel salt shaker. Puched a series of holes in it to make the large opening.
