@xprincessx84 I totally agree, I live in the uk and i'm part Romani gypsy yet danced belly dance for 10 years and taught by lebanese and cypriot dancers when I lived in Cyprus, I have incorporated odissi movements and yoga to help flexiblity whilst researching ancient cultures, so what I am trying to say hehe is that I hate how the west has like you said cheapened this dance into silly girls shaking their hips and pouting.

@greentiger777 The tempo doesn't deviate from the belly dance as a style. Belly dance is based on isolation and exaggerated belly movements. It's style overall isn't determined by tempo like some other dances. Her speed isn't what makes her performance less-than-peak, it's her lack of skill and control and good combination.

I agree, i have been a professional belly dancer for 7 years and performed at 2 lebanese resturants in cyprus and lived over there for 4 years, i have many lebanese friends who taught me, i am very close to them, they are incredible dancers, i am always in awe of them, totally better than her, she disgraces the dance- any twit with a couple of drinks down her can dance like that.

Secondly, taking Belly Dancing Lessons with Sophie, appearing on BGT, and respective of the above by no means qualifies her as a good Belly Dancer. I go to many Weddings/Arabic celebrations and see much finer examples of Belly Dancing, all of whom have probably never had a lesson in their life.

Firstly Sophie demonstrates poor rhythm, randomly shaking her body with a lack of controlled, fluid movement. Belly Dancing is an Arabic cultural tradition, not an English/Western one, so I will forgive you in thinking that this is a good representation of a Belly Dance, I assure you it is not!!

As you see, they are all different styles, but they all capture an emotion that you need to have for oriental dance. Sophie's dancing style is quite 'western' - she is using bellydance moves, but the choregraphy and feel of the dance is not what i think is proper bellydance. it lacks much emotion and just reminds me of some music video. I may be worrying too much, but it just annoys me that this passed for belly dancing on a talent show.
