I was there. The trombone guy who got knocked over (Tyrone?) had played football before, maybe in high school, that was a funny part of the whole thing...Stanford thought they had won the game until "The Play" occured. That was why the band was on the field in the final seconds. All right now, baby its all right now??
Not to malign the call of Cal announcer Joe Starkey, which is now considered a classic, but the Stanford announcers had a better grasp of the different Cal players involved in all the laterals. They mentioned three Cal players and even identified Moen (sic?) as the guy that scored the touchdown. Starkey only mentions Rogers (twice). The Stanford announcers screw up by saying that Stanford might be penalized for "players" coming on the field when they meant "band". Most amazing game ever.
@ForeverYoung58 Starkey loses control during exciting plays. When Kevin Riley melted down against Oregon State and stupidly tried to run from the ten instead of throwing the ball away so cal could kick the tying field goal, it took Starkey about two minutes after the play (and the game) was over to say what had actually happened. All I knew was that he didn't throw the ball away. That all Starkey kept saying. He's horrible on exciting plays. He doesn't tell the listener what's happening.
@abbeywood22 Although the Stanford guys were better with the player identification, Starkey perfectly conveyed the insanity as Moen was about to score..."THE BAND IS OUT ON THE FIELD!!! HE GOING TO GO INTO THE END ZONE!!!! HE"S GONE INTO THE END ZONE!!!!"
It's likely that 99% of the people who never saw the broadcast in '82 think that Joe Starkey did the play-by-play for tv, since replays of the final play/touchdown announcement is (almost!) inevitably dubbed with his spazztastic words...however, Joe did the broadcast for KGO radio, which was the official station for Cal football (which explains his exuberance).

Hints: the only state that entered the Union by treaty (not annexation); the only state whose flag is permitted to fly as high as the Stars and Stripes; the only state that can technically leave the Union if its citizens choose to do so; the only state whose TAPPED oil reserves keep our country from being entirely dependent on foreign oil; the only state claiming at least 3 of the 10 most populous cities in the country (the largest being 4th, arguably 3rd (it switches from year to year)).
Are you referring to America's hemorroid, Texas--better known as "The Gateway to New Mexico"? You should probably spend less time shooting small animals and more time researching your claims. California also has 3 of the 10 most populous cities in the country (Los Angeles, San Diego & San Jose). Also, Texas is NOT the only state whose flag is permitted to fly as high as the US flag. All 50 state flags are allowed as long as the US is raised first and lowered last. Check out the US flag code.
Here's what I am lost about...if Stanford had a timeout left, why didnt they run the clock down to like 2 seconds, take the timeout, then kick the field goal!?!?! Why take it too early so Cal gets at least a shot to score, like they did!??!?! Unless i am missin somethin here, I don't get their reasoning.
In case something went wrong, you need the extra time. That and time control wasn't done by cowards who kneel when they should play to the bitter end.
For all u stanford people leaving bs comments let me say that 1) the only reason its taking cal a long time to build a stadium is cus its actually gonna look good and feel good, unlike stanford where on the second level when ever someone moves it feels like an fn earthquake 2)if stan. students r so smart y cant they line up on the right side of a kickoff(watch big game).
Are you serious??? It took them over a year just to get a bunch of idiots out of the trees! With all of the nutjobs in positions of authority in Berkeley and the numerous environmental groups there, they will NEVER build a new stadium. The best you can hope for is to fix up that rotting dump so it's not such an national embarassment. Even that will probably take fifteen years to start. Face it, Berkeley is the worst place to build anything. Stanford gets things done--on time and under budget.
@abbeywood22 maybe our stadium sucks, but at least we got good players (better than Stanford) and at least our band knows when to be on the freakin field, ya bunch of lemmings.
@dogolog22 Are you serious??? The quitters at cal rolled over and played dead while losing their final three games to finish 5-7. That's why that dick Oski looks more like a dog than a bear. Stanford is 11-1 and #4 in the nation. But you think that cal has better players? Your lame ass school is an embarrassment to the Pac 10 and the state of California. The only thing that you were correct about is that your stadium does suck. However, that's appropriate since the team and the city also suck.
its discusting you call this a good play. that play was horrible. infact i highly doubt it was even a play, it just happened. if a coach were to call that play, theyd get fire. that is not* a good play at all

Thanks for posting this! It's interesting to see the Stanford version (and the Cal version is slightly messed up because it is showing a replay when the decisive touchdown call is made).
Anyway, I'd like to point out to all those Stanford guys complaining about poor officiating, that in Elway's drive he completes a pass that everyone agrees shouldn't have counted because the receiver had run out of bounds--perhaps if it had been ruled incomplete they never would have gotten the FG. So nah.
If it's so crappy, why did you post it? I believe if that play had happened on a nuetral field, the officials would have not caved in and declared it a touchdown just so they could escape without the fans attacking them. Also, the replay system used today would have ended the play when the cal player was down before he lateraled the ball.
Come on now! What's not to love about a school that hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1959, has the most decrepit, rat infested dump of a stadium in the nation, takes twice as long just to get idiots out of trees than it takes Stanford to build an entire state of the art stadium, and has to go back twenty-five years to a game where they won only because of poor officiating as their happy memory? If you look outside of the "People's Republic of Berkeley", you'll find that everyone hates cal.

I find it interesting that, for the past few days, you have made numerous comments on several videos denouncing cal's victory. And I have to ask, what the hell is your purpose? Are you trying to take a case to the NCAA to change the final score of the game? Or are you just trying to piss people off? The fact of the matter is cal won and there is nothing you can do about it. You think Cal has no happy memories? I challenge you to name five memorable events in Stanford history.
5 memorable events for Stanford? 1) Stanford built a new stadium in 9 months while cal is in a ratty dump, 2) Stanford has been in 3 Rose Bowls since cal's last one in 1959, 3) The 1990 Big Game when Stanford scored 9 points in the final 12 seconds to win 27-25, 4) The 7 straight Big Game wins from 1995-2001 which is the longest winning streak, 5) The biggest upset ever when Stanford beat USC in LA--a 41 point underdog, [bonus one] Stanford had the greatest coach ever: the legendary Bill Walsh
@abbeywood22 ball never touched the ground and he lateraled it befor his knees touched the ground, the play happened, it was legitamite, we won, it was epic, and was like, how fucking long ago? Get over it.
@dogolog22 Try removing your head from your ass and then watch the video. You'll see that you're wrong as usual. The officials blew multiple calls on the play and the Pac 10 admitted the next week that there should have been a penalty on cal for not having enough players up front. So, one day when you grow up to be an adult, you'll realize that your one happy memory of the mediocre cal program is a complete (and epic) fraud. Your little play was NOT legitimate and neither are you. Deal with it.
@abbeywood22 Me, a person is not legitamite, if the play was "ALL THAT BAD" and "SHOULDNT HAVE COUNTED" then you should have done it then, even if there was a penalty on the play, there would have been a penalty on Stanford for your dumbass band getting on the field. We won, you lost, were good, you suck, and if your the adult, maybe you should stop bitching about a game back in 82..crybaby.
@dogolog22 Please have an adult or somebody with more than a fourth grade education proofread your ridiculous comments before posting. Maybe you can find a "You Tube for Children" that you can enjoy instead of bothering the grownups. Please try to pay attention more in school or you'll end up cleaning gas station toilets and asking for spare change outside of WalMart. Right now, you appear to have little chance of ever amounting to more than just a steaming pile of dog crap.
@abbeywood22 Oh cuz your an adult, going onto videos to just be a troll and diss other teams, look at yourself, how many hate comments did you post on this video? Seriously, your arguing a with stranger over a game of football. And id bet money that if Stanford made the play, youd be fine with it and think its legitamite. Want an example of an adult, last Saturday, I went to a Cal game, Cal vs Washington, we lost, and me and my dad didnt complain, we took the loss like a real man. not like you .
The officials ruled it a touchdown because: 1) Kevin Moen made it into the end zone with the football; and 2) there were no penalties called against Cal. It had nothing to do with the game being in Berkeley.
BTW, the only people who "clearly" see that Garner's knee was down are those who wear Cardinal-colored glasses. For the rest of the world, the video evidence does not support a conclusion one way or the other.
@Naperdude05 I'm simply pointing out that the officials missed multiple calls. The Pac 10 admitted a few days later that there should have been an illegal formation penalty on cal for not having enough players within ten yards of the kick. The officials missed the player being down while he still had the ball as well as at least one forward lateral. They're human and they make mistakes. The band running on the field made it hard to see the forward lateral, but the ball did travel forward.
