  • is this video supposed to bash metallica? or what? if he is bashing metallica, wait till he hears the black albums "The God that Failed"

  • @Constantdoodle - I understand your point. However, where do we draw the line? Does Jesus speak through pornography? Can I find Christ in the Saw series of films? I am a pastor entrusted with the care of God's flock, do I encourage my flock to go pick up the latest Slipknot CD and find Jesus' message in it? We have to be very careful.

  • Before Jesus saved me I loved Metallica. I was a very angry man and found a connection in their music. I don't think liking Metallica sends you to hell. For me their music is so connected to my old life I cannot reconcile it with Christ. Parts of our old life have to be left behind. While this message is compelling I do not remotely believe God speaks through bands like Metallica. While I appreciate Pastor Van Sloten trying to connect with unchurched I'm not sure this is the best route. There i

  • @nicadaemus but if you say that god doesnt speak through bands like metallica then arent you kind of limiting God.... Even satan does gods will.

  • this is amazing

  • - Metallica has used the bible more than once to indict itself. "The Four Horsemen", "Creeping Death" and "The Judas Kiss" most prominently.

  • we should have metallica in my church

  • Dude, St. Anger is not about god being mad and them agreeing..its about how they went through drugs and bad shit like that and now they're venting "fuck it all fuckin no regrets".....Most of their songs are not good...they're about death like most metal...blackened is the end of the world..fight fire with fire is nuclear warfare...and how is this connecting to god??

  • @MrBobbyjoe5

Wrong. Fight Fire with Fire is a criticism of capital punishment told from the point of view of someone about to be executed. Read the lyrics. It's asking if fighting fire with fire actually does anything but feed the human desire to 'get even'. With that said.....none of them have anything to do with "god" unless you're looking for it (save for a few such as "The God That Failed"). If you are looking for it....you're not necessarily wrong on a personal level.

  • @JPhinfan86 "Wrong. Fight Fire with Fire is a criticism of capital punishment told from the point of view of someone about to be executed. Read the lyrics. It's asking if fighting fire with fire actually does anything but feed the human desire to 'get even'. "

No, the whole band has said before that Fight Fire with Fire is about the feared Nuclear War between the US and Russia. Even in an old 1985 show you could hear James saying same thing. The song you were thinking about is Shortest Straw

  • @Darkit2099

Actually I was thinking of the song, "Ride the Lighting" which is everything I said above about criticizing capital punishment. Looking back now I have zero clue why I said that (from the man's point of view) about "Fight Fire with Fire", I know better. I was probably distracted writing something at the same time - no clue. You're right in your description about the conflicts at that time.

  • @JPhinfan86 Yeah, you're a hundred percent right about Ride the LIghtning. But besides that it's also a horror story because the character in the song describes being trapped in the electric chair and dying but then waking up and learning it's a nightmare. Yeah I was totally confused when you said Fight Fire With Fire being about what you said it was lol. Because on that note at the end of the song you can hear rockets shooting off.

  • I want a transcript of this.

  • @fixxxer3456

Best bet would be to get the book the John wrote, you can get the first chapter for free here metallicaatchurch org

  • is this guy so clueless about his bible that he can't recognize that "creeping death" is about the angel of death right out of the bible?

this guy needs to study his book some more before "guiding" his followers.

  • Everything is good until jesusfreaks come by...

I get what he's saying, but my question is, why do you talk about metallica in a service?

  • @eddgomezHaHa why not? if you read the book he explains why he did a sermon on Metallica, search "The Day Metallica Came To Church" and its the .org site

  • @eddgomezHaHa cuz metallica can kick church's ass

  • pretty nifty stuff

  • it is the anger of men your god is supposedly above emotion i find myself though a person against religion believing a good man but religious people are the cause of this it seems most of humanity uses religion as either an actless crutch or a captivating weapon against our fellow man i don't need an ethereal being to love my fellow humans but humans are the reasons for hate we can justify mass homocide but can't accept a man due to color religion or sexual preference MAN is good or evil

  • How can anyone watch only two minutes of this? I had to watch it all! Just last night I went to see Blue Oyster Cult and Lynyrd Skynyrd, of course, the fanatics were there preaching the evils of rock music! I salute you for finding the good where others have closed their ears assuming it evil! Not only have I saved this to my faves but i posted it to my Facebook! I can't wait to read the book!

  • This is so awesome! I loved Metalloca as a teen and love the connection.

  • Amazing!

  • watch the whole clip dudes....i bet half of you didnt.

i checked it out...the preacher is not getting the profits ...they go to charity.

  • some of you didnt watch the full clip... watch it all before you cast a judgement...

hey, i heard the monies go to charity...not the author

  • Not sure it's the best thing in the world to preach to everyone on YouTube about an angry, vengeful God at the very beginning of the sermon without balancing His love and mercy and grace.... but I will read the book with an open mind and I think as long as preachers stay sound in their Scripture and the Spirit, it takes all kinds!

  • WOW! Would love to have seen the bands reaction to the sermon as it unfolded!

  • The God of truth is the same God wherever you see him.

  • definetly a cool story, thanks for following the lead of the Holy Spirit!

  • amazing man...keep it going :]

  • I am both a Christian and a Metallica fan, a fact some of my Christian friends don't understand. I'm thankful that someone else can see beyond the heavy metal persona, that the band is not "evil".

  • @metallicamommy agreed, exactly like you.

  • This is really interesting and i actually used to like Metallica, it's one of my son's favorite bands because I made him listen to it 'inutero'. This v ideo on UTube definitely puts a very different and interesting view to not only Metallica but many heavy metal bands. I might have to rethink a few things but will first read the book with an open mind.

  • metallica till death

    sermon u doing great man

    more on!!

  • Every lyric of every song? Dang!

  • Very nice sermon!

  • The concept is one that intrigues me: Using secular music in a sermon to show the relevancy of God.

  • This seems like a pretty cool concept... Never heard of a church preaching on a metal band lol

  • This is making me reconsider my perspective on how the church relates to culture.

  • Amazing message! I know so many lost souls that have overlooked this connection. I can't wait to get this book and pass your message on!

  • metalica is way cool, I used to rewrite lyrics to music, to actually fit my life. But I always wanted to make a compulation of their riffs and guitar solos.

I don't want to proculate rightious anger, but Anger is a defence mechanism that is used to get peoples attention. Be angery, but do not sin. So many people think Christianity is some childish sundayschool preaching sermon. We are to turn the other cheack, but that is for authorety over you.

  • i am looking forward to reading this book :-)

  • Cool sermon! Wish more people had that much intensity for God!

  • at first I thought Ok here we go again another goodie too shoes telling me that bands like metallica and ac/dc and kiss (old kiss not new, new kiss sucks! ace frehley for life!!!! anywho back to my comment)

and all the bands I love are satanic and I need to stop listening to those brain washing devil worshiping people

But what I heard today makes me want to read The book

I will comment on it after I read it to see if what I said earlyer is what the books about!

  • Excited to finish the rest of the book. SO far very intrigued. Awesome.

  • The intensity for Metallica should be less than the intensity for Christ

  • This is a great message - I do wish the video was better and showed the speaker. I am really looking forward to reading the book.

  • This is a great message - I wish the video was better. I am looking forward to reading the entire book

  • what an idea what is church for aren't we suppose to spread the word

  • very cool sermon idea, I read chapter 1 of the book online and can't wait to read the rest. Just shows you you never know what doors are waiting to be opened out there

  • very cool sermon idea, I read chapter 1 of the book online and can't wait to read the rest. Just shows you you never know what doors are waiting to be opened out there

  • Now this would have been a cool sermon to be at. Metallica rule! But gotta remember without God there would be no you no me or Metallica. This pastor has good taste in music.

  • lol who do fack believes in god or satan fail i only beliefe them in southpark

  • This is a very interesting, thought-provoking sermon! I can't wait to read the book!

  • Seems like Metallica want to change this world and are pissed about the crap that satan brings.

  • whatever will move this money church machine - he will use. This dude is an ass and if Metallica knows what this pedofile priest said and they are proud then I can say they just want more money.

  • Angel of death? mixed up with slayer maybe? I think god is rather fond of them as well :)

  • @maff77 he refers to the biblical angel of death which is the one in creeping death, slayer's angel of death talks about Mengele, which was a nazi doctor that killed a bunch of people with his experiments

  • Why not listen to whatever you want? You can listen to someone else's feelings of fact or fiction to be told an interesting story. Humans have had communication since the dawn of their existance. It is fact that the oldest known "song" is a about 4000 years old, which is even older than the "story" of Christianity. Music is amazing, notes and rhythms are captivating. I won't let a religion dictate what I listen to and stop me from experiencing something new or feeling a beautiful harmony.

  • Hey "New Hope" gay... don't try to exploit Metallica's work and inspire to promote your stupid stuff, what they've said and done has nothing to do with your religious bullshit and they also hate people who search solutions in religions. Whatever you do, whatever you say, you are still the kind of pathetic people that Metallica are talking about.

  • metallica arent the only band who sing about injustice , or crying out to god or about old and new testament . audio slaves first album is agood example . but people still shake there fist at god and reject the worlds only saviour yeshua (jesus) . unless the songs lyrics point people in the direction of the answer , the song fails . metallica dont sing praises to the creator or give god the glory he deserves , so a metallica concert is no more a church service than a football game. thinkabout it

  • this guy is talking about how a METALLICA concert is just like a chuch, ppl go into the building, the ppl on stage preach their Prayers/Songs and everyone who shows is drawn together to worship a god, let it be god of the catholic or christian faith, or even METALLICA THEMSELVES!!! . . . . personally in this whole clip i love how metallicas lyrics are compared to the bible and have similar meanings. Fucking Awesome!

  • The Day Burzum came to chruch

  • Fuck this shit

  • I cannot believe how childish and naiive these religious types are. 'Is it OK to listen to Metallica, because I'm a Christian?'

What a joke. Your god is sure all-loving, because he will torture you with fire for eternity if you listen to a certain type of music. I spit on your dictator god.

  • Oh god I wish they'd do this at my church! but that will never happen, cuz almost everyone in this damn town is like 65 or older. T_T well....a man can dream

  • WOW...that was one of the greatest sermons i've ever heard...i'm an orthodox and i really love metal music...all my life i've been listening to dogmatic people who 've been claiming that metallica are against god and they worship the evil without even trying listening to any of their songs...nor a single note. ..however i'm not the one to judge them but i'm really glad there's one pastor out there who really got the meaning and can transmit it to others

    Congratulations, greetings from Greece

  • people can't understand tht using metallica's lyrics shows that God and Metallica may think the same way. It doesn't matter if Hetfield or I don't know who don't believe in God, God's words may be inside their lirycs. It doesn't matter if you wish or not all of us have the some "God thinking" inside us, God's about love and we're all humans so we love, if you don't go back to your planet.

    THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE

  • And what about the Some Kind Of Monster verse... : "This is God ain't so pure, This is the God that is not pure" ...? Plus Hetfield has written stuff somewhat against God... But I guess that's just to free interpretation...lol

  • Way to leech on someone's fame. I bet you have it all planned out PASTOR STOLEN VAN.

    I mean really. Just...despicable.

  • Some pastor. Completely ignore the anti-religious lyrics, huh? Typical religious man.

  • Fucking deranged assholes. Now they want God to take credit? Fuck you people. James is a non-believe, surely. He WROTE ANTI-RELIGIOUS SONGS. For fuck's sake, have these assholes not heard Leper Messiah? Unless, they're trying to prove that God is a FUCKING LIE. This is the most dumbest fucking BS I have ever heard. Fuck religions.

  • @HolyDeth I think he's just speaking that God can speak to you through anything.

    Anyhoo, METALLICA! \m/

  • @HolyDeth um im pretty sure james is catholic.. he even has at least 2 tattoos of jesus on him

  • @axwet Um, I'm pretty damn sure he isn't.

  • @HolyDeth He is catholic. He said it i the Behind the Music on Metallica.

  • @HolyDeth you misunderstand leper messiah

  • @scars73 Oh I understand, it's anti-religious. Simple as that. It's all a lie.

  • @HolyDeth it's not anti-religous, it's anti televangelist and false prophets. God bless you brother!

  • @scars73 Correction, he's still singing about the lies. The lies people are blinded by.

  • @HolyDeth Well, I guess I don't really know what is in James' heart, as none of us really do, so I guess we can just interpret it how we want. That's the great thing about life. We are all free to feel what is in our hearts and minds.

  • @scars73 Agreed

  • Wow I live in Calgary and I never knew about this. This is awesome aha I wanna go to one of these sermons someday soon.

  • "Metallica is my religion" just got a new meaning =D

  • i would like to show this to a lot of people and promote this thing but i'm brazilian, and i live in Portugal, can anyone subtitle or show me where can i get subtitle in portuguese for this????

Se alguem souber arranjar umas legendas, eu ficaria muito grato, sera que alguem me pode ajudar a promover isto em Portugues??

  • @00Orbit00 Like you say. And also did you notice how Christians are growing and growing more on Youtube every day ? It's scary...

  • This was really interesting!

  • well....anyone can interpret the music how they want

  • Any other heavy metal bands you would recommend that have god's message in their lyrics?

  • @mustard2155

check out in flames. there ALOT heavier than metallica but lyrically there very positive. also check out avenged sevenfold, stone sour and possibly some slipknot.

  • @mustard2155 also flyleaf, I'm not a christian myself, but I just like that band and I know the members are christian ;)

  • @mustard2155 For Today, Demon Hunter

  • So fabulous! You are putting into words what God has been whispering to my heart for a long time now. How our mighty God loves us! He uses the things we can relate to to reach out to us. I want to have ears and eyes open to see where His Spirit is working!

  • Excellent. God reaches out to us who are so lost without Him in all the ways we can relate to - music of every type is communication. Thanks for sharing an awesome message- and thanks to an awesome God who cares enough to love us first just as we are!

  • So true... Sad that most of the preist still thinks that Metallica's evil.

I would love to read that book...

  • Send me money, send me green

    Heaven you will meet

    "Buy my new book"

and you'll get a better seat!!!

    Another lepper messiah...

  • @piconchetumadre

sorry it doesn't work like that, God still chooses

    Keith

  • @newhopecalgary

    That is so true.

  • @newhopecalgary God chooses people? Sounds pretty righteous of him to pick one over another in any form... :D

  • This is so awesome....to create an idea or message out of a heavy metal band

  • awesome! can't wait to read the book!! :-)

  • Sweet!!! It's so true! Just imagine how people will connect with God through metal...it's possible!!! Check out the facebook page!

  • Sweet!!! It's so true! Just imagine how people will connect with God through metal...it's possible!!!

  • Good stuff!!!! A lot of people should listen to this message!

  • Good stuff! As someone who has used "The Incredibles" and even Spongebob as part of his sermons, it is great to hear another pastor say that truth is in all kinds of places. Blessings on you, I hope the book does great!

  • this is pretty fantastic stuff! Can't wait to read the book cover to cover!

  • this is pretty fantastic stuff... looking forward to reading the book cover to cover!

  • Awesome!!! Fantastic video, looking forward to the book! Couldn't agree more that ALL TRUTH IS GODS TRUTH.

  • WOW! good stuff, so true! Really has me fired up for a youth lesson.

  • WOW! good stuff. so true. I really enjoyed this sermon - goes along with the first chapter of the book.

  • I am really excited to read the book, The Day Metallica Came to Church. I feel strongly about this topic

  • i thought this was a great sermon that, i really liked the connection you made! Can't wait to read the book!

  • Awesome! cant wait to read the book!

  • Love anything that can reach people for Christ can' wait to read the entire book

  • This is very thought provoking. Really makes you think....

  • I cannot wait to read the book!

  • This sermon is fantastic! I love who you link Metallica's anger with God's anger! Very inspiring! I never thought of it this way!

  • Great sermon; Can't wait to read the book. Pastor Van Sloten talks about how God speaks truth to us through different ways and medias.

  • This sermon is great...I cannot wait to forward to my pastors.

  • Incredible sermon! Wow! Looking forward to reading the book. My eyes were opened to using secular music in sermons to connect with students much have you have done with this. Thank you.

  • this is a great sermon. i can't wait to read the book. it'll be interesting to see how he ties Christianity into Metallica and other heavy metal bands. I've always wondered that myself.

  • I just read a sample of the book and I was very intrigued so I had to watch the Sermon!! Awesome Insight, God is good!

  • I have to say that this was an awesome sermon...and I am most definately wanting to read the book!

  • This is a profound connection between the lyrics of Metallica and the anger of God. I understand that this sermon gave rise to a new book by the same title that is being published this month.

  • For the longest time now, I've hidden my love of heavy metal music. Even though I have found most of it inspirational, I had trouble explaining that to other Christians. Now this lets me know that I don't have to hide anymore, and it can help me explain myself. Can't wait to read the book!

  • Really enjoyed hearing this sermon, and reading the first chapter of the book it inspired!!

  • The story behind this is amazing. Cannot wait to read the whole book!!

  • This book is going to be very interesting!

  • this was quite interesting!

  • Been to several metallica concerts myself. Looking forward to reading the book.

  • Can't wait for the book!

  • I cannot wait to read the book!

  • I'm really interested in reading this.

  • Everybody is probably going to worship something or someone. Often, it's not Jesus, but it is, undoubtedly, worship.

  • @hamptonsims I LOVE IT! I am a huge Metallica fan, came back to the church 3 years ago! We are always looking to complete the Great Commission but can't seem to find a relevant way, as the Body, to do so. We have gone to these extremes...using 80's, techno, Guns n Roses, the list goes on...to help reach the unchurched. The way to live out the Great Commission is not by forcing Jesus down their throats...SHOW the love of Jesus. Make it relevant to THEM, not to us. Great message

  • It is so ironic. I wrote about this same thing in early 2009, except not Metallica, but American Football and the Arizona Cardinals: bible09.com - If Only Church Could Be Like This

So I am definitely looking forward to the book. Good luck and and God Bless to all involved. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

  • This is what becoming reconciled to a hurting world with a relevant practical Christianity is all about!

  • This is neat, certainly can't wait to read all of the book!

  • This is neat, can't wait to read the book... it certainly is intriguing!!!

  • A very interesting idea for sermon series.

  • Wow....very inspiring.

  • I'm intrigued. I really like that you're not automatically condemning them. I can't wait to read the book to get the whole thing.

  • Awesome video! Looks like it's going to be great!

  • Can't wait for the book!!!

  • Cannot WAIT for this book! Some of my best devotional time came from music and it wasn't all Christian! Great sermon!

  • Awesome! the sermon is great, can't wait for the book!

  • @pdawwg08

Thanks, books out Aug 10, link to info and first chapter is in the description of this video.

  • so as a christian myslef, is it ok to listen to some of metallica's music?

  • the question I always ask myself is why do I really want this? What in the music is drawing me and does it reveal more about who God is in my life. So does the music draw you closer to God or not?

  • @newhopecalgary Kind of failing logic there, since god doesn't exist and he's a fairytale creation of the ancient civilizations.

  • @Fran616 Do you want the deevul to possess you? Then no it's not okay!

  • @Fran616 music and religion should be seperate.

  • the gospel according to metallica. never thought I'd see the day. maybe that's why they outlasted all the other thrash bands from the 80's that sung about satan and stuff

  • why did he pick mel gibbson suddenly...there are more directors in the world....mel just good lucky with that film

  • metallica is the best band ever on earth. period.
