Tomorrow is a huge day... as they will start discussing the public option and decide weather or not it will be included. If we want this we need to make our calls NOW! If you do not have the numbers I have them on my profile. I also have petitons and other resources in the comment section. Thanks
Yes, Charlie, please get him out of here. This is absolutely rediculous: a majority of Americans want a public option and you have 60 democrats in the Senate. I'm not exactly sure what else Emmanuel needs to get this thing in the bill. Please tell those Senators to do their fucking job and add the public option. There's no reform without it, period
Why? Did you not hear the last few seconds where Rahm said a public option may not be present in the Senate bill, but that the House would likely DEMAND a public option in the final bill. The final bill is determined by a resolution committee made up of members from each chamber of the Congress which tries to "resolve" the conflicts in the two versions of the legislation; for the final bill to pass, it must be approved by the House and Senate, but the Senate only needs 51 votes, which they have!
The problem with this clip: the title is misleading. It should say, "Emanuel OPTIMISTIC about health insurance reform bill with strong public option being passed by Thanksgiving," but maybe that's not controversial enough to draw out the commenters. Or maybe the idea is to keep the public pressure on Congress for the public option, and by sending signals that the public option is in jeopardy, it keeps people engaged. Whatever the case, it makes no sense to attack the principles or the process.
since there isn't only one bill and the one's out there haven't even been read or decided on we'll see what happens in the end - who knows maybe we'll be at war with Iran and no one will care about health care
I agree with you, dude. I would change the name of this clip, too. It would make a lot more sense to call it, "Rahm Emanuel OPTIMISTIC about Democratic efforts to ensure a strong public option in the final health insurance reform bill."
I wonder how Rahm would answer Charlie's questions today? The Dems now have 60 Senators, plus the blue dog coalition just lost a member yesterday. And who knows . . . maybe a Republican or two will side with the yeas for a CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!
anyone who knows rahms record knows hes always been a selfish prick who only wants to win no matter WHAT the win looks like. if only he was more idealized like this tv counterpart.
So. A Democratic President can't get the most important component of his legislative agenda passed by a Congress controlled by his party? No wonder Americans vote GOP. They at least have party discipline.
if public option doesnt get passed this health care bill is utterly ineffective and Obama has failed. He has no excuse for not including the public option in his bill. Democrats control both houses and a failure to pass it has the blame sit squarely on Obama.
I find it hilarious that people put the blame on Obama because the SENATE won't pass health care with a Public Option...
I have a feeling it's because people want to find a way to blame Obama, instead of going a bit deeper and coming out with the uncomfortable reality that the congressmen and senators in this country (dem and rep) are full of corruption.
"congressmen and senators in this country (dem and rep) are full of corruption."
Obama was a senator, once elected DC mafia leader he suddenly found virtue & truth while shedding his obligatory senatorial corruption?.. like a frikn miracle, eh?
I think you're getting a bit off topic... we are talking about the passing of a Public Option here.
Obama has been pushing for a Public Option, but people have been debating whether or not the Senate will be able to pass it through. Obama does not control the Senate.
I disagree with some of the things Obama has done (Afghanistan for one), but he shouldn't get the majority of the blame for the Senate's problems.
It's because 70% of our country are retards who don't even know how govt. works. It sounds like i'm exaggerating but damn if i go outside and asked people what exactly the president, the senate, and the house did, NOBODY would get it right except for political junkies.
as prez he controls the agenda, and he controls the pressure he wants to put towards his goals. LBJ didnt pass the civil rights act, but he not only spoke vigorously on it, he also lobbied like crazy behind closed doors to get it passed. Obama isnt pushing the same way on healthcare. He could tell rahm "i hear you but I WANT the public option" and rahm has to follow orders or find a new job. but rahm's personal dislike for the P.O. seems to be swaying the prez, which isnt what he campaigned on.
I think your interpretation of how the government works is a bit off.
"Rahm has to allow orders or find a new job."
WTF? No he doesnt. He was elected by the people of his state, and can do whatever the hell he wants. It's hard to sway someone's mind when their pockets are swollen with Insurance Company pay-offs... err I mean, campaign donations.
i meant follow orders. he absolutely can NOT do whatever he wants. hes no longer elected to anything. Hes in a hire/fire position as chief-of-staff. if rahm thought that his past acceptance of insurance company donations when he was a congressman, would be a problem for his new job as c.o.s., then he never should have taken it. because everyone working FOR the pres serves at his pleasure, like any employee does for any boss.
look, i understand it isnt entirely Obama's fault and that Harry Reid's leadership in senate is also to blame as well as the 5 democratic senators who rejected the public option on senate finance committee.
but notice this video is before that committee's results, and the Obama administration instead of being firm on the public option they appear unsure.
Obama had to be much more firm on the public option. he compromised too early, and got outplayed by the insurance lobby in the senate.
The hard corp cadre here at tpmtv is dwindling as the intelectually honest ones have fled or are in the process of doing so. Join our campaign for liberty ,let's take this two headed hydra DOWN
I don't Q that RE's a corporate Dem bastard, but the quote here is hardly damning.
Is anybody expecting the Senate to pass a Public Option that's worth half a damn?
Check out Jacob Hacker's original concept...it's nowhere to be found in ANY of the committee proposals.
Single Payer or bust.
Recall the Obama claim that 'reworking the existing system' makes a lot more sense than putting through a completely new (Single Payer) system. Sounds like a bad calculation right about now, no?
I hate Rahm Emmanuel's slimy demeanor. The truth is HE doesn't want a public option. He hasn't lifted a finger for it to happen. This healthcare bill will be a failure for Obama, it will be a failure for the American people who stood to gain .
"Citizenship is not an entitlement program. It comes with responsibilities. Everybody somewhere between the ages of 18 and 25 will serve three months of basic training and understanding in a kind of civil defense."
- Rahm Emanuel, August 21, 2006
He might be pessimistic about a public option, but he seems optimistic about a public draft.
yeah if he thinks that American parents are going to allow their children to serve a very suspect government in such a fashion he has something special coming directly aimed at his forehead
Howard Dean just sent out a new petiton and is hoping to get 250,000 signatures in favor of the public option. I have it in the comment section of my profile. Please take a moment to sign it and then pass it on. Thank you.

you apparently trust politicians, that's unfortunate.

marniespeaks 2 years ago
i get a kick out of the phrase "wake-up" as if everyone who disagrees with you is asleep? you know the word for that? psychosis.
as for who missed what, health care reform will claw back onerous powers from health insurance providers like
1-ability to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions
2-ability to drop coverage if you start using your insurance
3-oligarchical control over drug and services pricing
your "obama talked with them so they're in control" argument is just a little dumb

But your right about the 'facts on the ground' changing now that the Dems have a new Senator. Maybe that will make the difference.
