I've met Bette a few times too and in my opinion she's the last of the true entertainers that do everything...no one does what she does..years ago practically everyone had shows like this..singing, dancing, jokes..no big talents any more really. Maybe a few.

No it is not part of the speel. One of the great things about Bette is she is a brilliant Adlibber. She would have forgotten the joke but can just talk her way through it & continue to make 'em laugh!  If you have never seen her perform - GO GO GO!!!
