There are some things cannot be unseen, ever. Putting an ad for Fred before a song featuring Elton John and Leon Russell is one of those things. Thanks internet!
This album was full of laurels and rave reviews, but I must admit that I first thought it was a bit on account on the fact they are both acclaimed 60's and 70's mythical musicians, and maybe a little mislead by the sobriety of the album cover, I also thought it would me just a nice get-together jazzy-bluesy-vintage but also sober album with an adequate sound and of course a spot-on production by the never disappointing T Bone Burnett. I could'n be so wrong.
@alemartiniani This is a pure pop gospel folk powerful gem with no scruples or austerity and full with uncanny melodies, that by the way make me wonder why the hell didn't they wrote this songs earlier??? where were them hidden?? and Mandalay Again, which was left out of the album, is just glorious and gentle and delicate but still as strong and powerful as the rest of the goddamned beautiful album and I hope people buy it and not download.
@alemartiniani I couldn't agree with you more. I've been a fan of both since the 70's, and God forbid this is the last album either of them record. For us long-time fans, this was a highly anticipated release, and neither of them disappointed any of us.
funny to read the comments here..so many haters..listen any artist that can last 40 years in spotlight, sell 250 million cds world wide and STILL sell out tours and is number 3 money making artist on forbes after so many years has to be doing something right..i suppose better than 99 percent of artists from past and current so lets stop hating and making foolish statements.
this is what i think, the only reason they put elton john's name before leon russell was an alphabet thing........leon is the greatest rock and roller of many years. love him, elton, ugh not so much.
Elton Johns hero was Leon Russell, Leon Russells hero was Hank Williams, wonder who ol' Honkin' Hanks hero was?....I'm just a boomer, my memory only extends back to the Beatles on Ed Sullivan ; )
Utterly ridiculous. The idea that elton john has "saved piano from 'certain oblivion'" by playing mostly very basic chord progressions and singing lyrics that can be described as no more than exceedingly average. He is a perfect example of some I like to call 'the C word', Cabaret. It's sad that you think to class him within the ranks of somebody who is (according to you) solely responsible for the development of modern jazz. (Even though he isn't).
@lambonastickdead Major orchestras perform Cage's "4'33". It has no chord progressions or lyrics at all. How do you compete with rap? When Lion started, there was a new piano in every watering hole, cabaret, and seraglio this and that side of Dixie. Jukeboxes, Techno DJ's, street whores, and porn stars rule today. You're lucky to find an out of tune piano shaped object a half step flat with all the keys working in the same places now. The genius EJ survived as a piano player in that climate.
@RioRags Fucking maniac. "The genius EJ survived as a piano player in that climate." survived? and"streetwhores"like their new to our time. Elton John was playing clubs in the sixties (probably the biggest cultural revolution this side of dixie), there were hundreds of artists playing in clubs every night in london on an exiting new music scene. Saying meaningless (and untrue) things like"You're lucky to find an out of tune piano..."it doesn't support your argument for the millionaire Elton John
@lambonastickdead Allright Paragon of Sanity. What are your feelings About the chord progressions of "Michael W. Smith?" Is your hatred of Elton John really About basic chords? About Ted Haggard, homosexual meth head, who resigned as Head of the National Association of Evangelicals? About churches across this country from fundamentalist pentecostal to Universalist employing gay men as choir directors and organists? About sexual deviance and heroin abuse of Ray Charles who you commend instead?
@RioRags At no point have i used arguments concerning any information about the personal lives of the musicians i admire.I don't comment on beatles tribute videos with comments alluding toward an intimate relationship with them even though i was born 13 years after they died.Elton John.should not be spoken in the same sentence as musicians like ray charles because he doesn't have what they have. The reason Ray Charles is 'genius' is becuase he has some soul in his music. Elton John doesn't.
@lambonastickdead Your name begged the suggestion. Apparently, Don Cornelius, "Soul Train," and its producers, didn't think so, hosting EJ more than once I believe. One of the few ofays to do that. Far as what the watering holes have fo ya, you'll see when you turn 21. It is just like living rooms. In the twenties, every one had a piano; now, every one has a TV. Watering holes with good pianos, are few and far between these days.
@lambonastickdead I should add I have seen Ray Charles live twice. The last recording of Ray Charles in his life was with Elton John, "Sorry seems to be the Hardest Word;" I just found a copy of the recording on you tube. It is almost disrespectful of Ray Charles himself to insult the last person he recorded with.
@RioRags Makes no difference at all to my argument, he still did it for the money. It would still be utterly ridiculous to say that when listening to that recording, you heard Elton John's voice to be of anywhere near the same calibre of Ray Charles'. Never mind his keys playing. The sad thing is people like you, who assume that it would be insulting to him to slag off the last artist he recorded with, actually it's just a bit sad that he died after leaving behind a few dodgy medioka recordings.
@lambonastickdead Sounds like you have the "Real Musicians have Day Jobs" idea. EJ doesn't love music? Isn't the whole point to make a living doing it? Why bother otherwise? So EJ had broad appeal, interacial, multi-generational. He guested "The Muppet Show," and again, "Soul Train." Elton outplayed everybody for years, that is partly why. He didn't scare people like "Lucifer," (Mick Jagger), and other successful pop musicians of his day. So does Jesus, does that make Him Satan, or not unique?
@RioRags I'm sure Elton fucking John loves his career, it is a dream life. My point is that Elton John should not be classed within the same ranks as people like ray charles because he will never possess the talent they had. It's irrelevant that he went on the muppet show because so did james fucking blunt, that is just something celebrities do. "Outplayed" doesn't mean anything, a successful artist is not one that makes money or appeals to the most people. Jesus or Satan don't exist mate.
@lambonastickdead I just want to see your video response. Too much talking about it, not enough doing it. You say you sing and play. You and EJ, in a cutting contest at a club. You'd be a laughing-stock, they'd send you packing. You'd be lucky to get out of the place with egg on your face.
@lambonastickdead I'll admit to be ashamed to be talking about it, not doing it. Musicians create music, not argue about it all the time. In the end, every man is just another man, same with EJ. And so you are left to look at yourself in the mirror, and ask, "am I better?" and if not, you should just shut up. It is not about winning an argument, but making music. EJ can, you can't, put out, or shut up.
@RioRags You know nothing of music outside the people who get multi-million pound record deals. There musicians playing in the bands of these people who are much more capable better than the star, as most people in that situation usually are. There are people who spend there time trekking to obscure parts of the country to play fucking weddings and if they were to be granted with some money to make an album they could have a number 1 easily. You probably think im talking about myself but im not.
@lambonastickdead I can put a ball through a hoop too. Still broke at 30, though. You make it sound like somebody just handed it to him, when like any working musician he had to work his tail off to get where he did. Sure there was more than just being a musician. He chose his friends and enemies wisely. Yeah he played a game too. But now you want a discount after he did the dirty work. Its not like he woke up at 50, started playing piano in stadiums. Now he paid his dues, you want a rebate.
@RioRags There is no game, there is luck and that is all. Elton John is just a man who wrote and sang songs and happened to be in the right place at the right time. He is not a genius, he's not a brilliant piano player or a singer,he just writes very commercially successful songs. People who play in stadiums (like U2 or Elton John) play to an audience of the lowest common denominator. Someone like Elvis Costello writes brilliant songs but he would think it beneath him to tour stadium gigs.
@lambonastickdead Brian Eno produced the U2 album "Joshua Tree," and you recommend him instead of EJ. Chance has everything to do with it, that I never denied. But EJ still works hard, and earns his money.
I have difficulty seeing any musician as overpaid. People make millions for all sorts of nonsense.
I see a fundamental similarity between EJ and Ray. Both excelled at playing what they felt. Very few successful keyboardists play what they feel well as EJ; Ray is one of the few who did.
@RioRags The idea that fucking Elton John plays anything with feeling is hilarious. I can tell that your the kind of person who would might think anything of this man i saw on television last night, Josh T. Pearson, it's tragic that everybody leans in and listens to him as though his meaningless talentless drivel has anything to it.
What i don't understand is how a cabaret stadium act like Elton John has somehow crossed over from mainstream tastes and reached people who listen to genuine music.
He flashed a big, ol' toothy grin as his seasoned band smoothly lifted the swirling, spiraling, keyboard-led "Funeral" into the requisite, revved up "Love Lies Bleeding," powered by cathartic, grinding guitar and John's pounding piano notes... Most artists would give anything to have a song the caliber of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" to save for their encore. For John, that was merely Song No. 2 of the night.
Hah! That's a laugh! Besides Alison, Costello never wrote anything that good and Alison would barely make an Elton A-side. In fact, Elvis would've had a better career performing Elton's b-sides. Besides, that stupid Buddy Holly schtick got really old. Elton and Bernie's best stuff like Tiny Dancer, Your Song, Levon and half the Yellow Brick Road album out classes Elvis' best by a mile. Any songwriter or composer will tell you that.
@lambonastickdead I prefer EC to most of EJ's career, but it's senseless to say Declan wouldn't have accepted stadium gigs, and stadium money as a career option.
It doesn't matter whether Elton John was as 'talented' as Ray Charles or The Beatles. There's simply no arguing the fact that he has made and performed a boat load of widely respected music that has touched the lives of more than most artists can ever dream of. It takes more than marketing gimmicks to stay relevant for so many decades. He did what he did with the talent he had and persevered. Nobody can take what he has achieved away from him. It's in the history books and Wikipedia. ;)
@Iambonastickdead Come on Iam, these two working together is pretty good. You can't call them untalented. You put up a good arguement, I admit, but there's no point in insulting us just because you think this is bad. Stick to the dislike button please so we can avoid these kinds of arguements.
@WhySoFTW Elton John is a very average artist and always has been, to enjoy his music is purely tasteless. He is only a money making machine and nothing more. I never called Leon Russell untalented because I'm pretty sure he is just another guy making an album to cash in for his family. That may sound contradictory - but once upon a time he was probably involved in an exiting music scene whilst Elton John was trying to stick his own head even further up his own arsehole.
@lambonastickdead You are the sorriest excuse for a musican and critic. The fact you know so little of the works of Elton John and Leon Russell is clear example of your lack of knowlege. Due to limited space, I only say this. You should stop trying to justify your comments by claiming to be a musican and do some research on music/musicans. A barometer of others work is how they are regarded by their peers. That said, Elton John and Leon Russell are as RESPECTED as it gets..
@KEVZHOMZVIDEOS you have no argument whatsoever, "The fact you know so little of the works of Elton John and Leon Russell is clear example of your lack of knowlege.", completely meaningless and also quite ironic. I bet you think that jools holland is 'englands greatest piano player' and elvis presley invented rock n' roll. i bet you think that neil diamond is a genius and that the band of world class musicians that he tours the world with feel honoured by his presence. you are tasteless.
@lambonastickdead "When i said 'I am 17' i was making it clear that i have been alive less than most of the weird old people who have wasted their precious time listening to Elton John." When I was 17 I ignored EJ, preferred rival Brian Eno. Now 40 buying "early" EJ recordings for the first time. I wish I was open then to EJ when I had my whole life ahead of me. I wouldn't mistake his lack of virtuousity as bad. "If you can sing and play piano, you're a genius..." - Willie "The Lion" Smith
@lambonastickdead "When i said 'I am 17' i was making it clear that i have been alive less than most of the weird old people who have wasted their precious time listening to Elton John." When I was 17 I ignored EJ in favor of rival Brian Eno. Now I am purchasing early EJ albums for the first time. I wish I had when I had my whole life ahead of me. Willie "The Lion" Smith observed, "If you can sing and play piano, you're a genius." You are too young to realize in life we go through phases.
@RioRags When Willie 'the lion' smith (whoever that is) said "If you can sing and play piano, you're a genius." he definitely did not mean for anybody to interpret that as 'anybody who can both play piano and sing simultaneously is a genius'. i can play piano and sing and i am just 17 as you pointed out. My advice is that you go back to brian eno and try to erase this 'phase' from your memory.
@lambonastickdead As I recall The Lion said this on his narrated Memoirs recordings. He also wrote an autobiography I read, "Music on My Mind." The way to qualify the statement is assuming you make a decent living in the process of doing so. Try a search of his name on you tube. There would be no jazz as we understand it without Willie "The Lion" Smith, your ignorance of his name reveals at the least you don't know everything.
@RioRags I'll be honest, my point still stands that he didn't mean to say 'anybody who can both play piano and sing simultaneously is a genius' and you would be a fool to think that "to qualify the statement is assuming you make a decent living in the process of doing so." is in any way a valid point against it. Willie 'the lion' smith probably wrote that autobiography before music became as commercialised as it is today, before people had hundreds of other people marketing them and before elton
@lambonastickdead We're overthinking the statement. 'Lion' started in piano heyday. The piano industry has been in decline since 1928, the best selling year of the P. Vaudeville, tin-pan alley, created a lot more opportunities for pianists than EJ had today. Now piano is tougher as a pop instrument. What EJ did actually could be considered more, not less impressive in light of coeval considerations. I regret to observe, rather, that Elton might be cast as saving piano from certain oblivion.
"Not many people can just glance at sheet music, and play it exaclty without a single mistake", your an idiot. I am a working musician and obviously you are not, most people who play piano learn exactly by the book and can read sheet just as well as Elton fucking John. I don't think you quite understand why you like Elton John, i seriously doubt that it is because he can read music. To even dare say that Elton John has accomplished more in modern music than any one of my examples is just silly.
we would not have had Mad Dog's & English men without Leon Russell, and lot of other really great music too! He may be a little old but he ain't done yet...Thank you Sir,no doubt in my mind you are still one of the very best!
What's so funny about peace love and understanding? Not a doggone thing, and these two greats got together to make sure we still had examples to follow. Buy this album! The workers are worth their wages.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If anyone is tasteless enough to have bought this tat, or tragic enough have it in their home, i would just like to say that i am 17 and i am better than you.
@guitarkev77 I couldn't imagine how awful it would be to live your life, you are fucking thick. When i said "I am 17" i was making it clear that i have been alive less than most of the weird old people who have wasted their precious time listening to Elton John. I was making the point that at just 17 I am infinitely better at everything than anyone who enjoys listening to this fucking weird medioka pop star, which mostly includes anyone who is above the age of 17.
@lambonastickdead You are a coward. You write all this nonsense, but I doubt you'd have the balls to actually say them to anyone in person. You would be on the ground looking up and wondering what hit you.
@judecreek2 Honestly, I don't know who you think you are, but the idea that you could somehow know whether somebody else (who you do not know) would or wouldn't have the "courage" to tell an Elton John fan that they are a moron and that they have wasted their enitre life thinking Elton John was ever worth listening to makes you a moron. But do not forget that you are also a moron because you enjoy listening to Elton John.
@lambonastickdead In one respect, you're right. I don't know if a silly big-mouthed little boy like you has the guts to say in person what he is comfortable putting in print. And I do not care. You keep coming back to this video for the sole purpose of making yourself unpleasant, unliked, and unwanted. Congratulations, you've accomplished your goal. I'm done with you.
@judecreek2 I'd just like to make it clear that i don't just keep returning to this video with the sole purpose of making myself more unpleasant because quite frankly i will never care what any Elton John fan thinks of me. My point is that some people(including you) don't understand that Elton John isn't in the same league as Joe Cocker or The Beatles, he does not possess talent like Ray Charles or Jimi Hendrix did. He is a flamboyant medioka up-himself twat and he always was and always will be.
@lambonastickdead Ray Charles covered a majority of his songs, and only had around 5 hit #1; Jimi Hendrix carreer didnt even last a decade. Joe Cocker, only has one hit single "you are so beutiful", and The Beatles carreer only lasted 10 years. ELTON on the other hand- that flamboyant medioka up-himself twat, has had over a dozen #1 songs, multiple tonys, grammies, oscars, and about 3% of all record sales on EARTH are of his songs. and he has the #1 most bought single in history.
@AndrewJBoyer You've answered the question as to why Ray Charles would have covered any one of Elton John's medioka songs for me when you said he has the #1 most bought single in history, because they are all fucking goldmines. Your point that joe cocker only had one no1, jim hendrix died or the beatles only lasted 10 yrs is insubstantial because at least they had talent. The idea that elton john is better than them because he has remained in public spotlight is ridiculous, someone else did that
@lambonastickdead to say elton had very little talent is flat out rediculous; and to say elton had NO talent is just a blatent lie. im not saying the others DIDNT have talent, but if youre going to compare them to elton in modern music, elton will end up on top. Not many people can just glance at sheet music, and play it exaclty without a single mistake, not many people can pack houses, just to see them SOLO on piano.
@lambonastickdead What's a medioka song? You might have more credibility when slagging off others as ridiculous and setting yourself up as having superior taste if you could spell. Why bother coming to an Elton video to slag him off? Nothing better to do in life, like so many sad trolls who clog up youtube and the net?
@ johnwinfeild - THAT was about THE most ignorant comment Ive ever seen on here. Leon Russell has a "sh*t" voice ?? AND hes a WHAT ???? WHY ???? Because youre too narrow minded listen to ALL types of music. FYI - Leon Russell is one of THE most respected and talented musicians among his peers. If Sir Elton has enough respect for him to do an album with him, Im thinking HIS opinion of a legend is far more valuable than yours.
@ johnwinfield. That "has been" was a MAJOR influence on Eltons early piano playing. That "has been" is one of THE MOST talented and respected musicians in the business. He was responsible for launching many a career, as well as leading the way musically for the first ever benefit concert, "The Concert For Bangla-Desh", with George Harrison. Your comment was about the MOST ignorant one Ive EVER seen on here. YOU obviously are a narrow minded individual.
Why is Elton working with this has been. Who the fuck cares about Leon Russell? Who is he? I had to look him up on Wikipedia. He has a shit voice and he is a cunt.
@johnwinfield367676 ...first question.. are you 15 years old? because if you are then I don't need to go on any further and can chalk up your idiocy to lack of experience. or just.. STICK WITH YOUR GODDAMN POP BACK WASHED BULLSHIT AND LEAVE THE CRITIQUING UP TO PEOPLE WHO SUNK THEIR TEETH A LITTLE DEEPER. HILLBILLY.
@johnwinfield367676 ..first off.. are you a little 15 year old? because if you are then I don't need to go on any further and can chalk up your idiocy to lack of experience. if not.. then LEAVE THE CRITIQUING UP TO THE PEOPLE WHO'VE SUNK THEIR TEETH IN A LITTLE DEEPER AND GET BACK TO DOING PIROUETTES TO POP-BACK-WASHED-BULL SHIT. HILLBILLY.
@johnwinfield367676 i see this is not the only comment you've made like this, stop going round stirring up trouble and grow up. The album is fantastic, Elton and Leon are the best duo since er, well, Tom and Jerry, Fred and Ginger...best duo in music anyway
Ha! Nice going. You've shown yourself to be the most ignorant person here. Was that your intention? Try growing up, and maybe the adults will let you sit at the big table.
@JoshuaTaylor well, we can;t all have the same taste. there are a lot of goodies on the album, and even ones you might not like at first are likely to grow. On the deluxe edition i also love Mandalay Again. Gone to Shiloh seems pretty popular
Ok, I love these guys as much as anyone.. but this song is an Elton style with Leon trying to change his style.. it doesn't work for me. However, they are two of the best musicians living today! The rest of the CD is incredible! Best Wishes! :-)
@Moosebumps27 And why the hell not?! Sure this man dropped out of sight for awhile but he's got a legacy worthy of The Hall (much more so than some of the others they've inducted). Some of the greatest moments in rock history were because of Leon (Mad Dogs for instance).
Channel 33 on Sirius will be playing Elton and Leon's collaboration starting today, 10/15. I have been waiting for this since about 1970 when I saw them perform together on the old Merv Griffin show. Pure magic.
@Mo19010100 the album was recorded 3 weeks after Leon hd brain surgery he had the surgery in Jan,,2010..The whole CD is great Leon will get the recongnition he deserves..Finally get into the Rockin Roll hall of fame..the best piano player ever...here the complete CD on NPR..just google it the best..
It is my humble opinion that Leon Russell is my home towns firm, solid claim to fame. There have been others, Bob Wills and the Texas playboys, Gaylard Sartain, Gary Busey, The Tractors, David Gates, but I think Leon stands out as our best contribution to at least popular music. We love him The failures of our radio stations in getting him more airplay like many of his generation deserve (he has paid his dues after all.( See the youtube video "Shindig 1964 ) He is a unique talent music.
@Mr1962KDSelvis I've heard that Tulsa has recently named a street for Leon. Is that true? It would be pretty cool to say, "Yeah, meet me on the the corner of Leon Russell and Fantastic."
Oh how I wish it were true ! Now maybe there are some plans in the works that I don't know about but so far no Leon Russell Boulevard. Hmmmm.....maybe I should make a little suggestion to the city council ?? Hey, Thanks for the idea..I think I will do just that.
Elton John's had great albums all in a row, starting with "Songs From The West Coast" in 2001, "Peachtree Road" in 2004, "The Captain And The Kid" in 2006, and now with Leon Russell with "The Union" in 2010. Rock on, Leon and Elton!
Leon's in FINE voice and the song has Clyde's signature all over it. Thanks to Elton for helping everyone pay tribute to Leon while he's still rockin our world. God bless you, Leon.
they bust a collective nut on the mic. straight bukkake'd on the vocals! two musical genius'. elton john looks like he belongs in the lord of the rings or somethin thou. elf lookin mofo
There are some things cannot be unseen, ever. Putting an ad for Fred before a song featuring Elton John and Leon Russell is one of those things. Thanks internet!

RioRags 11 months ago
@RioRags I'm sure Elton fucking John loves his career, it is a dream life. My point is that Elton John should not be classed within the same ranks as people like ray charles because he will never possess the talent they had. It's irrelevant that he went on the muppet show because so did james fucking blunt, that is just something celebrities do. "Outplayed" doesn't mean anything, a successful artist is not one that makes money or appeals to the most people. Jesus or Satan don't exist mate.
lambonastickdead 11 months ago
@lambonastickdead I just want to see your video response. Too much talking about it, not enough doing it. You say you sing and play. You and EJ, in a cutting contest at a club. You'd be a laughing-stock, they'd send you packing. You'd be lucky to get out of the place with egg on your face.
RioRags 11 months ago
@RioRags You probably think that is offensive- but i know it just means your argument has broken down. People don't eat eggs in clubs mate.
lambonastickdead 11 months ago
@lambonastickdead I'll admit to be ashamed to be talking about it, not doing it. Musicians create music, not argue about it all the time. In the end, every man is just another man, same with EJ. And so you are left to look at yourself in the mirror, and ask, "am I better?" and if not, you should just shut up. It is not about winning an argument, but making music. EJ can, you can't, put out, or shut up.
RioRags 11 months ago
@RioRags You know nothing of music outside the people who get multi-million pound record deals. There musicians playing in the bands of these people who are much more capable better than the star, as most people in that situation usually are. There are people who spend there time trekking to obscure parts of the country to play fucking weddings and if they were to be granted with some money to make an album they could have a number 1 easily. You probably think im talking about myself but im not.
lambonastickdead 11 months ago
@lambonastickdead I can put a ball through a hoop too. Still broke at 30, though. You make it sound like somebody just handed it to him, when like any working musician he had to work his tail off to get where he did. Sure there was more than just being a musician. He chose his friends and enemies wisely. Yeah he played a game too. But now you want a discount after he did the dirty work. Its not like he woke up at 50, started playing piano in stadiums. Now he paid his dues, you want a rebate.
RioRags 11 months ago
@RioRags There is no game, there is luck and that is all. Elton John is just a man who wrote and sang songs and happened to be in the right place at the right time. He is not a genius, he's not a brilliant piano player or a singer,he just writes very commercially successful songs. People who play in stadiums (like U2 or Elton John) play to an audience of the lowest common denominator. Someone like Elvis Costello writes brilliant songs but he would think it beneath him to tour stadium gigs.
lambonastickdead 11 months ago
@lambonastickdead Brian Eno produced the U2 album "Joshua Tree," and you recommend him instead of EJ. Chance has everything to do with it, that I never denied. But EJ still works hard, and earns his money.
I have difficulty seeing any musician as overpaid. People make millions for all sorts of nonsense.
I see a fundamental similarity between EJ and Ray. Both excelled at playing what they felt. Very few successful keyboardists play what they feel well as EJ; Ray is one of the few who did.
RioRags 11 months ago
@RioRags The idea that fucking Elton John plays anything with feeling is hilarious. I can tell that your the kind of person who would might think anything of this man i saw on television last night, Josh T. Pearson, it's tragic that everybody leans in and listens to him as though his meaningless talentless drivel has anything to it.
What i don't understand is how a cabaret stadium act like Elton John has somehow crossed over from mainstream tastes and reached people who listen to genuine music.
lambonastickdead 10 months ago
@lambonastickdead From Pittsburg Concert Review which I attended:
He flashed a big, ol' toothy grin as his seasoned band smoothly lifted the swirling, spiraling, keyboard-led "Funeral" into the requisite, revved up "Love Lies Bleeding," powered by cathartic, grinding guitar and John's pounding piano notes... Most artists would give anything to have a song the caliber of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" to save for their encore. For John, that was merely Song No. 2 of the night.
RioRags 10 months ago
@lambonastickdead JUst maybe you dumbass, you should listen to Leon Russell's own words on the subject. Look before yoyu leap.
tjohn555 9 months ago
Any songwriter or composer will tell you that.
ianmackenziedavis 11 months ago
@ianmackenziedavis NO, not "ANY" songwriter or composer, in fact you'd be hard pressed to find one
tjohn555 9 months ago

It's in the history books and Wikipedia. ;)
DiablosDungeon 1 year ago
@Iambonastickdead Come on Iam, these two working together is pretty good. You can't call them untalented. You put up a good arguement, I admit, but there's no point in insulting us just because you think this is bad. Stick to the dislike button please so we can avoid these kinds of arguements.
WhySoFTW 1 year ago
@WhySoFTW Elton John is a very average artist and always has been, to enjoy his music is purely tasteless. He is only a money making machine and nothing more. I never called Leon Russell untalented because I'm pretty sure he is just another guy making an album to cash in for his family. That may sound contradictory - but once upon a time he was probably involved in an exiting music scene whilst Elton John was trying to stick his own head even further up his own arsehole.
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead You are the sorriest excuse for a musican and critic. The fact you know so little of the works of Elton John and Leon Russell is clear example of your lack of knowlege. Due to limited space, I only say this. You should stop trying to justify your comments by claiming to be a musican and do some research on music/musicans. A barometer of others work is how they are regarded by their peers. That said, Elton John and Leon Russell are as RESPECTED as it gets..
KEVZHOMZVIDEOS 1 year ago
@KEVZHOMZVIDEOS you have no argument whatsoever, "The fact you know so little of the works of Elton John and Leon Russell is clear example of your lack of knowlege.", completely meaningless and also quite ironic. I bet you think that jools holland is 'englands greatest piano player' and elvis presley invented rock n' roll. i bet you think that neil diamond is a genius and that the band of world class musicians that he tours the world with feel honoured by his presence. you are tasteless.

RioRags 1 year ago
@RioRags When Willie 'the lion' smith (whoever that is) said "If you can sing and play piano, you're a genius." he definitely did not mean for anybody to interpret that as 'anybody who can both play piano and sing simultaneously is a genius'. i can play piano and sing and i am just 17 as you pointed out. My advice is that you go back to brian eno and try to erase this 'phase' from your memory.
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead As I recall The Lion said this on his narrated Memoirs recordings. He also wrote an autobiography I read, "Music on My Mind." The way to qualify the statement is assuming you make a decent living in the process of doing so. Try a search of his name on you tube. There would be no jazz as we understand it without Willie "The Lion" Smith, your ignorance of his name reveals at the least you don't know everything.
RioRags 1 year ago
@RioRags I'll be honest, my point still stands that he didn't mean to say 'anybody who can both play piano and sing simultaneously is a genius' and you would be a fool to think that "to qualify the statement is assuming you make a decent living in the process of doing so." is in any way a valid point against it. Willie 'the lion' smith probably wrote that autobiography before music became as commercialised as it is today, before people had hundreds of other people marketing them and before elton
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead We're overthinking the statement. 'Lion' started in piano heyday. The piano industry has been in decline since 1928, the best selling year of the P. Vaudeville, tin-pan alley, created a lot more opportunities for pianists than EJ had today. Now piano is tougher as a pop instrument. What EJ did actually could be considered more, not less impressive in light of coeval considerations. I regret to observe, rather, that Elton might be cast as saving piano from certain oblivion.
RioRags 1 year ago
"Not many people can just glance at sheet music, and play it exaclty without a single mistake", your an idiot. I am a working musician and obviously you are not, most people who play piano learn exactly by the book and can read sheet just as well as Elton fucking John. I don't think you quite understand why you like Elton John, i seriously doubt that it is because he can read music. To even dare say that Elton John has accomplished more in modern music than any one of my examples is just silly.

But do not forget that you are also a moron because you enjoy listening to Elton John.
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead In one respect, you're right. I don't know if a silly big-mouthed little boy like you has the guts to say in person what he is comfortable putting in print. And I do not care. You keep coming back to this video for the sole purpose of making yourself unpleasant, unliked, and unwanted. Congratulations, you've accomplished your goal. I'm done with you.
judecreek2 1 year ago
@judecreek2 I'd just like to make it clear that i don't just keep returning to this video with the sole purpose of making myself more unpleasant because quite frankly i will never care what any Elton John fan thinks of me. My point is that some people(including you) don't understand that Elton John isn't in the same league as Joe Cocker or The Beatles, he does not possess talent like Ray Charles or Jimi Hendrix did. He is a flamboyant medioka up-himself twat and he always was and always will be.
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead Ray Charles covered a majority of his songs, and only had around 5 hit #1; Jimi Hendrix carreer didnt even last a decade. Joe Cocker, only has one hit single "you are so beutiful", and The Beatles carreer only lasted 10 years. ELTON on the other hand- that flamboyant medioka up-himself twat, has had over a dozen #1 songs, multiple tonys, grammies, oscars, and about 3% of all record sales on EARTH are of his songs. and he has the #1 most bought single in history.
AndrewJBoyer 1 year ago
@AndrewJBoyer not to mention HIS carreer has lasted over 40 years.
AndrewJBoyer 1 year ago
@AndrewJBoyer You've answered the question as to why Ray Charles would have covered any one of Elton John's medioka songs for me when you said he has the #1 most bought single in history, because they are all fucking goldmines. Your point that joe cocker only had one no1, jim hendrix died or the beatles only lasted 10 yrs is insubstantial because at least they had talent. The idea that elton john is better than them because he has remained in public spotlight is ridiculous, someone else did that
lambonastickdead 1 year ago
@lambonastickdead to say elton had very little talent is flat out rediculous; and to say elton had NO talent is just a blatent lie. im not saying the others DIDNT have talent, but if youre going to compare them to elton in modern music, elton will end up on top. Not many people can just glance at sheet music, and play it exaclty without a single mistake, not many people can pack houses, just to see them SOLO on piano.
AndrewJBoyer 1 year ago

If Sir Elton has enough respect for him to do an album with him, Im thinking HIS opinion of a legend is far more valuable than yours.
keenankelly50 1 year ago
@ johnwinfield. That "has been" was a MAJOR influence on Eltons early piano playing. That "has been" is one of THE MOST talented and respected musicians in the business. He was responsible for launching many a career, as well as leading the way musically for the first ever benefit concert, "The Concert For Bangla-Desh", with George Harrison. Your comment was about the MOST ignorant one Ive EVER seen on here. YOU obviously are a narrow minded individual.
