Circa '74 @ the Prom Ctr., in St.Paul MN was 1st time I heard the Man. I will never foget it~!! It was near unbelievable !! I actually thought my ears were lying to me...
hey so the reason he "gasps" while talking is because he is breathing correctly. most of us breath the minimum we have to in order to live day to day.
Maynard on the other hand, relies on breathing correctly to play the most efficient he can. his correct breathing method just transfers over to speaking as well.
I tried his technique, AND IT WORKS! (Not surprising, as it IS MF, but then its surprising anyways as it worked, know what I'm sayin?) Anywho, after an hour's practice (using MF's technique) I still could hit the E above the staff (concert D) WOOT!
The problem today, is we don't have heroes like we did back then. Guys like Maynard Doc Buddy Rich were heroes to set a standard to. People to look up to, who had skill as well as stardom.
There are not any people today to look up to. We don't have to wait for a star to come to town and awe us. We have up to the second "youtube" info that has desensitized us.
I feel bad for the musical youth of today...this is why programs are disappearing, and the music industry has become a joke.
Well, let's face it; inbetween 1920 and about 1980 or so big bands were what everybody liked. Jazz was what "all the cool kids listen to." Now it's rock n roll. Plus, with guitar and your basic drums set being so easy to learn how to play, kids can learn one of these instruments and play what they like to listen to on their ipods in a matter of days. Being able to play like maynard ferguson takes years,
So very true... Anybody can make noise on a guitar, electric bass, or drums. Grab a grass or woodwind (classical style instrument) take years and years to be good. Longer to be very good.
That's NOT what he was doing. His what you call "waving" of his arms has to do with a release of energy...a follow through. He got this technique from a concept that he learned that has it's origins in the martial arts.
Question: Can Anyone tell me why MF sounds out of breath every time he speaks? For someone with remarkable breath control and range it's a little confusing, like he's smoking 50 a day. See any vid where he's speaking he sounds the same.
This man says it better than anyone else. The biggest mistake I see trumpet players make in high school is that when they try to go higher they get less and less of an airstream going because they tense up their throat and push the mouthpiece against their face. Higher notes require more air, and faster air. Everyone has their own method, so just remember that whatever works for you is probably the right thing to do as long as you can maintain decent tone and pitch.
Saw him twice in upstate NY at Red Hook High School in mid 70's,CAT was amazing and second time was the debut of PRIMAL SCREAM. He took the roof off!!!
He came to my hometown for a show in the mid-70's and after the show, he sat at a tiny table off stage and let all us kids get autographs and actually listened to some of our high school jazz band wanna-be's play and gave pointers...what a classy guy|!
clear up the viedo . have seen it on daily motion, with good viedo but the audio was week.Getit all on , and good. bill chase would have diged it that way. thanks . mark
I saw Maynard in 78 79 81 84 85 87 88 89 91 94 97 98 99 00 01 02 03 04 and 06 "Blue Birdland" was his theme song -- and this one's GREAT -- it DEFINES "chops" trumpet. Almost all of the MF techniques are on display here, actually (the whole breath & body go into the sound). In itself, viewing/hearing this clip is a great way to remember Maynard, who was an utterly gracious human being, too, as his band members and fans will attest. Thanks brian740.
By any chance is the rest of his clinic available? PLEASE!

It is fun to add this perfect double C to other videos with songs that end on double g or double c's or even just to random songs.

Doesn't really sound like a dubba C. Too clean and full toned. And yeah Cocaine does help short term range. I don't why though.

It could be cocaine use. I know he used in the seventies.
solidleadtrpt 2 years ago
How would cocaine do that and did he really do cocaine, and lol also how would he be able to do all of that while doing cocaine

You've obviously never done cocaine :)

He did have great air control, but he probably just didnt like talking.. If i had to guess anyways.
glarclath 3 years ago
its just a habitual way of breathing he had. its like a twitch.
mynamisdan 3 years ago
@maynardgravy it was because Maynerd was breathing for TWO. His Kuato also needed air.
