when i was 18 my friend n i rode right through the migrant camp. it was crazy, like a lil village. kids were playing, women were hangin clothes in the trees.
I rode through there a few weeks ago and got caught by the rangers. The were just sitting on there fat asses do nothing. It wasn't launch time because it was 4 o'clock.
KEEP OUT, TRAIL CLOSED. There is a nice trail you can ride instead, it runs along the 56fwy and its beautifully paved just for bike riders. You can have fun there too!
The last sentence of the last post was supposed to be a joke, so don't take it wrong.
I also saw guys working there, but building jumps and ladders. The ladders have been largely deconstructed. I've never seen anyone cut a trail and I went there very shortly after the migrant evacuation until closure 12/08. As for the trail width, it's very dependent upon season and growth of vegetation trailside. One big difference was how loose it was initially. Firmer, faster, but less challenging by 12/08.
NewbPro- There was a long period of time Intestines and Tunnels overlapped, so saying cutting of Tunnels after Intestines isn’t correct. I've ridden both, same day. Tunnels was a secret of sorts. Migrants were forced to leave mid-2007, I started biking there mid-2007. Not much time to create miles of trails, is it? Also, why would your Dad take you to a migrant encampment? As you know these trails ran right up to the front doors of the migrants. Very dangerous, unless he was trying to lose you.
My Dad use to take me through these trails about 5 years ago when it was still used by the Migrants and you could see them still camping out in the clearings on the side of trails. Most of the damage was done by Mtn bikers who started hacking at the dwarf PQ oak trees when the Bush Tunnels were discovered after the Del Mar Mesa "Intestines" was shut down for housing construction. The horse people started hacking last year. Before da Hacking you could not see the sky it was truly a bush tunnel
i have been riding these trails for years as well, and highly doubt mtb riders hacked anything. The bushes have always been high enough for bikes to get through. Horses on the other hand need far higher clearance to get through. They even got the horse riders on camera with big saws...
vhp you can doubt all you want, but my Dad and I have seen Mtn. Bikers cutting the trees!! The trails have become wider thus making the canopy thinner due to Mtn Bikers. We have also seen horse people down there trying to find a way in. And you are correct about the horse people cutting the Bush Trails, but they have been cutting only recently, because they are jealous of us Mtn. Bikers having a really cool trail......The very East side is open and legal to ride all the way to the pond..Peace
That's disappointing to hear. We ride those eastern trails too, pretty fun. There's also a nice little jump section on the north side of the pond - flowy and you can get some decent air. Later..
Oh ya, that's a really nice flowing trail!..I missed the first left hand turn and flew into the bushes the first time...LOL.. I like how it starts at the very top of the mound of dirt where the old gate use to be.....My Dad rides a Gold TREK Session 77 and I have a Red Schwinn Hardtail dirtjumper..Maybe I will see you out on those trails sometime...Peace Brotha!
Hi HurleyMTB, My Dad and I ride the legal open trails mentioned above. You can also ride the Bush Tunnels in the closed sections, but if you get caught by Senior Ranger Gina Washington you will get a ticket for sure. The Rangers keep posting permanent signs, but some careless Mountain Bikers keep yanking the signs out and throwing them in the bushes. Just stay in the Northeast and Northwest sections that are marked for riding. There are lots of cool trails to explore!..Peace
These trails were never on the area's official 'designated trails' map. When rangers patrolling found that someone had damaged various vegetation (*cough* - equestrians) they officially designated them as illegal.
what a same!! that is the coolest trail i never been on!!

Really cool perspective! Would have been even better if it had a fast paced song overlayed - but otherwise really neat :D
