To be honest it really doesn't matter who is your favourite of the three. Ella, Billie and Sarah are the vocal Jazz equivalent of Renaissance masters, Leonardo da vinci, Michaelangelo and Raphael. They were all geniuses. Also can't forget Dinah Washington. All exceptional artists whose voices transcend time.
Very typical of her recordings at the time. Thrilling at every level. He years with Mercury were her happiest and most productive and successful, but she grew disenchanted with the label putting out album after album with little promotion. She went to Roulette and that label ground of the albums in dizzying succession with no promotion. She went back to Mercury and so it went until she ended up in Pablo, which couldn't afford decent packaging but gave her artistic freedom.
it was amazing to know i was related to her, but its jaw dropping to see and hear her perform i wish she would have come to the family reunion we had before she passed.
DEAR DIREFRANCHCCCEMENT, WHAT LP IS THIS TRACK FROM? SHE IS ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS AND STUNNING AS ALWAYS. AND THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT. SINCERELY, EXQUISITESOUNDS
direranchement... thank you for sharing your Sarah Vaughan collection with the world.!
Like you, I have a fondness for Sarah and her interpretation of classic songs. Her voice has both sweetness and wisdom and she truly 'lives' a song. As a voclaist, I admire teh greats - Ella, Helen, Dinah, Billie, however, Sarah is by far the one I connect with most.
Sarah is the one vocalist who was constant all the time never a dissapointed performance or recording. Makes my soul sigh and cry and feel and long for more from her.
I saw her in 1960 and again very late in her career. Her voice grew with a richness that was stunning. She sang Send in the Clowns and reached amazing highs and lows that you could feel in your body. Yes, she could bring tears to your eyes.
I have loved her since the first time I heard her, as a baby in the crib - my dad loved her and I heard all of her albums many times before I was 5 - I learned to scat from her and from Ella - I feel blessed to have been able to see her so many times on TV. I loved her as she got older too, and loved all of the experiments she made in music. She was an innovator and an inspiration and her voice will never be compared to anyone else's.
I was an adolescent when first drawn to her music...this was perhaps the second of her recordings with which I fell in love, the first being her superhuman live recording of "I'll Be Seeing You". If you haven't heard it, check it out. As with all the greatest singers, she had her strengths and weaknesses...but for sheer line and consistent vocal beauty across the years, she was unmatched.
Perfect vocal virtuosity! Great tone, controlled vibrato, intensity, clear diction. But then again could you expect less from the Divine One? Gorgeous Sarah Vaughan just gorgeous!
Top Line..

we were 2 good friends, u were my best friend actually, but you've changed in every single way ..."You're not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me what we're through
It's all over now
You've changed"

When I hear her, it brings back memories of seeing her live at Birdland and Basin Street, and I cry! They don't make them like her anymore!
