  • What's wrong with you lot? He plays Chopin like a God! It's powerful and dramatic the way it should be, not boring and weak like Valentina Lisista who ever the hell she is, or Ashkenazy who hasn't got half as much technique as this guy.

  • the chinese pianist that I listened play fast, but no with sensibility.

  • Where is the sensibility of music? Are you deaf? Have you ever listened to Chopin? Retard.

  • muito bom

  • ok, he can plays the piano very fast, but where is the sensibility of music? pollini plays better.

  • Nice hair.

  • I can't believe anybody would ever criticize this. so well-done.

  • i thought kempff is an old man

  • @piano0b You're referring to Wilhelm Kempff. Freddy Kempf is something of a distant relation to Wilhelm.

  • This is an Etude people, not a pensive piece. Go Freddy.

  • One question: Why does he own a Steinway if he does not plan on equipping all of its musical weapons? A Steinway can create many amazing sounds; however, I only heard about three - loud, soft, and in-between. Sure he can play it very fast and very clean, but can he create something extraordinary? Maybe if he listened a little bit better.

  • Great job ... saying this after listening to Murray Perahia's recording, so quite the compliment! Keep playig!!

  • @sadie1981 I'm sure he will.

  • 左手キレイです。

    しかし、右手のキレイなフレーズがあまりうまくだせない感じで、音が濁っていますね、まずテクニックにこだわらず

    美しい音をより出せるよう頑張りましょう

  • He's too tense. It feels nervous and rushed, when it should simply be energetic but natural. Really, I don't see why so many liked this performance.

  • Woooooooooooow~!!!

  • Richer does that better

  • @TheValerio187 I do it better then Richter! watch?v=zYkOMh7-z9M

  • magnifique

  • well, it is an etude after all. this study was for speed and agility in rapidly changing chord patterns if i'm not wrong. i kinda enjoy this version more than valentina's there is much more tension and a huge range of tone and dynamics :)

  • I think he is extremely talented and a very good musician, but he takes himself to the limit in this etude. He plays it too fast, even for him. Despite the tempo, he manages to make music, but a more relaxed version, just a bit, would be less stressing also for the audience.

  • speed is not a solution you need to play music

  • @ClaudiuPiano Well...as if this was "too fast," it's Chopin's tempo marking! Chopin wrote it at 88bpm per half note!

  • Anne Kauppi plays this much better...

  • *sigh* People we don't care about your goddam opinion! Shut up and listen to the music no one likes a critic about how someone plays. If that's how he plays it that's how he plays it!

  • @Agomongo1235 I thought the comments section was an appropriate area to, you know, make comments. Some people happen not to like his interpretation of this piece. Like this: I'm not a fan of the speed, but technically he's very clean.

  • He seems too hunched and tight in the shoulders. Probably playing faster than he should.

  • He's going much too fast, you can hardly hear the melody. I usually tend to lean more towards Kempf's interpretations, especially when it comes to Chopin, but Horowitz played this much better.

  • Where is music? fucking kempf

  • @JadeKawaii1 You may not hear it but others do!

  • we have to wonder if chopin would like this etude to be played so fast. sometimes professional pianists may exagerate just for competitive reasons.

  • I really like Kempf as a pianist. He is a very expressive pianist (see Beethoven's Pathetic Sonata). However, this performance is not that good. Several wrong notes 0:19, 0:38, 1:00, 1:02, and lacking of expression and feeling. The melody in the right hand can barely be distinguished while the left hand is too loud throughout the whole piece. Besides, the sound quality is pretty bad. The mics are too close to the piano and the sound is too dark. Check out Valentina Lisitsa's. That's perfection!

  • fngrbrdr2 you don't need to grow two hands more hands for this, all you have to do is go through a major Horowitz or Rubinstein rehab and then play the etude! oh mydadiscool1234 want to see the piece played at this tempo look up Sviatoslav Richter performing this etude.

  • by far the fastest ive seen this piece played

  • he's a robot

  • Sorry kids,

that's is a pretty solid performance at a quick tempo ..

I've heard this played slower and less accurate in competition

  • @ocsound1 he still doesnt have the experiences to throw hands from above etc, it just loses the sounds, as you can hear in the start when its descending

  • I heard a wrong note at 0:53 !!! haha

  • orribile!

  • i dont think this is a very good performance. Too fast, inaccurate, bad listening, and poor sense of rhythm. However, a stunning technique.

  • @wagneristhebest yeah its not really even. i wouldnt be satisified if i played it like this

  • its actually how fast its played get the sheet music and look at the tempo im playing it right now

  • thats actually how fast its played get the sheet music and look at the tempo. im currently playing this piece righ t now

  • @callofdutyops1 yes but chopin's tempo markings were for a different piano, which had considerably lighter action in the keys than a modern piano. Furthermore a modern piano creates a far more dense sound and has a larger bass resonance than his piano. Finally, he's obviously struggling with the speed in certain areas, and it is difficult to understand the musical meaning of the piece with this pace. I woudnlt try to play it minim = 80 or so as it says, as we live in a different age of pianos.

  • @wagneristhebest You point out an important thing about the difference in pianos, especially the resonance. I believe a lot of pedagogy over exagerrate bass, masking much of the dynamic and natural legato resonance/overtones of the piano of today. At the end of the day, there are different schools and different interpretations. It takes ultimate mastery to discover and play the true essence of the pieces. For sometimes there is such a thing as over-institutionalization, losing the art.

  • @wagneristhebest It's a rather achievable tempo marking. Despite the fact that it's marked to every half note at 88bpm, I would try and go around that tempo, but I don't think just because our pianos aren't as "light" as Chopin's piano makes it not achievable. If Chopin wanted it one way, I don't think it's a bad thing to therefore play it at that speed. The reason why he's struggling with it is probably because he was nervous and made a bad impulsive decision to play it faster than he could.

  • omg he's killing the piece!...this performance makes ur ears bleed

  • Chuck norris could play that with his dick

  • 88 people don't understand Chopin!

  • Whats with the hair? lol.

  • Oh my God, that guy needs to slow down and chill. He's to stiff which means he hasn't practiced it enough to just let your emotions flow with the song. Sure he got all the notes right but you just can't see the emotion involved with chopins etude. Also there were basically no dynamics, I've heard and judged this song many times

  • @loplinger I agree with you

  • My jaw just dropped to the floor!!

    oh my God!!

I had only idea that a human could move his fingers so precisely and so fastly... WOW!!

  • Too fast for my likeing - rushed!

  • MAH EYES BE DECIEVING ME

  • cool ending xD

  • I like this song.

  • nice centre parting!

  • i love this guy playing it

  • He plays faster than Valentina Lisitsa

  • @bfeyalcin yes, he does, but he does make a couple mistakes....when judged it has less to do with the speed but with the accuracy....I mean....of course speed counts too, but accuracy is better.....

    Good performance though!

  • Not as well though.

  • freddy try to listen how pollini performs this last one... ;)

  • I love at 1:05 how Chopin meshed the song back to the beginning.

  • how many months would I took to study this piece?

  • @markabejero

Depends on how many years you've been studying piano, how many hours you pour into it each day, and if you're even any good at the piano.

  • @markabejero you play chopin etudes for your whole live. every amateur-pianist needs at least 1 year to play it "not bad"

  • How do 85 dislikes appear here? This guy is an expert, no mistakes...Live with it!

  • @HodiJSnitch i belive that this guy plays chopin like a midi file... tempo is without meaning... i can't feel expression...

  • @HodiJSnitch i belive that this guy plays chopin like a midi file... tempo is without meaning... i can't feel expression... listen this one and ceck out the difference

  • @HodiJSnitch i belive that this guy plays chopin like a midi file... tempo is without meaning... i can't feel expression... listen this one and ceck out the difference "pollini chopin etude op 10 no 4"

  • 10 million times harder to play than fantasie Impromtu op 66

  • If he played that any faster his hands would catch on fire. I hope he is not using flammable hair product or his hair may be at risk. Remember what happened to Michael Jackson. Don't do any Pepsi commercials Kempf.

  • KACHUPOY HAIR STYLE

  • not a patch on his recording , which is probably the reference recording for Op 10/4

  • Every note is distinct and crisp; Chopin would be crying in joy.

  • 私は日本人ですが、彼の技量に感動しました!!

    私もいつかショパンのエチュードを弾いてみたいです!!

I'm japanese , but I was very surprised his tecnick!!

I want to play chopin's etude like him someday!!

    Thank you very much!!

  • @sylb2828 Hey! Freddy Kempf is half Japanese you know? ;D

  • too many bad notes !!

  • seraphimist where?!

  • @seraphimist Yeah, I can't agree with you there. ^^;; I CAN agree with davidbaker03 though.. Although I think that Kempf did a fine job, comparing the... EASE in which some of the greats managed this song makes it look a bit labored.. Look at Vladimir Horowitz for example.. even though he didn't play it as fast as kempf most of the time, he played it with a marginally better technique and mastery. ;). Check out 7XX538sybMU to see what I mean..

  • I would love to have 1/16th of his talent! Beautiful

  • that's not really good

  • sounds a bit labored, and just a bit messy for this professional of a video.

  • My preference is to become one with Ksenia Morozova plays Kreisler-Rachmaninoff Liebeslied> Thereby two talented pianists might produce five more. By your standards two pianists are likely to give rise to teaching A.I.D.s.

  • ... very obviously a homosexual ...

  • @MusicPredominates These words are unacceptable ! We don't care about Freddy is homosexual or not.

  • @SurfeurBleu42 : ´Obviously´ and ´homosexual´ are words printers find so acceptable that they are regularly found in dictionaries (otherwise known as lexicons) appended to the English language.

  • @MusicPredominates I hope he is! Very attractive wouldnt you say? ;)

  • @corekykat : Well. That´s you !

  • @corekykat : Not at all. Homsexuals stand in the way of musical appreciation every time.

  • @MusicPredominates As do heterosexuals, like you. Take your ignorance elsewhere, please. YOU are standing in the way of musical appreciation.

  • @btjohnson96 : Get a step ladder and you may be able to see over the heads of heterosexuals next time you go to the baseball !

  • ohmagod

  • I think I played this for my Grade I piano.

  • I can aslo play this, but i need 2 or 3 more hand, and about a whole my life to practice)

  • Yeah man.

  • This Etude named "The torrent" has to be played according to Chopin at Presto con fuoco (white = 88). Freddy plays at this cadenza with a clear and an accurate play (we have time to ear each notes) and with both appropriate and appreciated nuances ! A very great performance, because I have personnaly not appreciated the Richter or Argerich versions (excuse me for the fans) : their versions are too fast, and unaccurate .. only to impress the auditors. Thnak you Mr Kempf ! :o)

  • @SurfeurBleu42 I have to say I agree. Richter's version was...

well, quite fast, to say the least.

  • @SurfeurBleu42 It wasn't named the torrent by Chopin. He never named any of his pieces because he believed it was up to the listener to decide what the music symbolizes and that he should not rob us of that. I think that is one of the things that makes Chopin great, we get to decide what it means.

  • @TheGuyWhoJustShotYou You perfectly right. An artist, whatever it is, and not only in music, has not to explain his work. Others have named this piece "The Torrent". But I have never said this name was created by Chopin itself.

  • @SurfeurBleu42 I would like to say one thing before I continue so there is no confusion, I am not angry. The thing with naming Chopins works is he hated this. So you saying it is called the torrent is doing something he hated.

  • @TheGuyWhoJustShotYou I understand. But even if Chopin was against the naming of his pieces, what importance ? With the aim of respecting his last wills ? What is amazing for every artist, it's the appropriation of his fans. And in this case, naming a Chopin's piece is for me a sort of consecration. The "purism" and the Art are for me incompatible.

  • maestro

  • Damn, amazing, composers with their, amazingness. Wish I could compose something 1% that decent - I can play some tough shit but composing stuff I play is impossible...

  • is it just me or does the piano have a weird tone in the treble

  • how in the fuck do you play this?!??! god damn... im angry.... but so in love

  • lol he looks like chopin himself!

  • Freddy Kempf is just awesome... He plays all the songs I like--fantastically

  • so I guess he was attempting to be a second Richter...

  • There are master pieces that only can be played by the main author. No no else.

  • @artemetrajes According to Chopin, Liszt played the 24 etudes better than anyone else.

  • @artemetrajes ummm composer?

    Authors write stories

  • @xyloboi06 - I agree with you. They both play this at a fantastic rate but Freddy does use pedal more than Valentina so her does sound perfectly clear. They are both great pianists and I love listening to them.

  • My fave piece hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaahahahhahahahahah

  • I've played this one for my exams 2 weeks back :) INSANITY! Breathtaking and very very very deep. Can't forget him (etude) and can't stop palying it again and again and again. thumbs up bro! :)

  • I love Freddy Kempf <3 : )

  • he is very good, though i wish he didn't use so much pedel at the end.

  • Piece of cake! I could do it. All I have to do is grow 2 more hands and practise for a couple of eternities.

  • @fngrbrdr2 even with four hands and after some eternities i'm not sure I could do it... xD

  • @fngrbrdr2 LMFAO!!!!!!!!

  • there are 75 retards amongst us!

  • @PcZocker111 you should check out valentina... she's cleaner. he's fantastic, dont get me wrong...but yeah...

  • un peu stressé quand meme nom ? décontracte !

  • I didn't know stephin bonnar could play pianno!

  • Insane, must be so satisfying to play....

  • So talented!

  • Entendiendo que es un pianista profesional, no se distingue bien el canto de la mano izquierda. Me gustaron las octavas de la mano izquierda hacia el final y el ímpetu para tocar.

  • 技巧高超~值得喝采!!

  • GOD!!!HE IS NOT ALWAYS ON THE MARK BUT AFTER 43 YEARS i WISH I COULD PLAY LIKE HIM!

  • Help me Leon~~!

  • tensed

  • wow ... 5*

  • great!!!

  • A serial killer was in his home and he Freddy couldnt resist the urge to play. :)

  • @openmindspace huh?

  • @openmindspace this comment has me dying! I love to watch people's hands go nutty on the piano like this, but it's hard to think of an occasion where I would feel like listening to just a recording. Like,

"Oh man, it's been a long day at work, time to wind down with a beer and a little op. 10 no 4".

    "I feel like dancin''"

Or if you had people over or something. "Hey guys, I'm going to put on some Chopin Etudes". Party's over!

  • absolute talent!

  • i want his piano. LOL. but he does rule

  • great technique :O

  • he look like mr hyde but i cant deny that his tooooo gooooood!!! i want his hands!!!!

  • Bravo !!

  • Wow, he's so hurry.....

  • An absolute dead heat with Richter.

  • I like his style - always emotional, technic is only tool...

    brabo and tanks for showing!

  • hey! that's the 'LEON S KENNEDY' HAIR STYLE! :D

  • @s055623 He looks more like Peter Parker, I think.

  • @Kijjakarn Except his fingers don't stick to the keys....XD

  • @Kijjakarn dont you mean peter parker looks like him??

  • @PianoLvsPaul

    Haha. You're probably right.

  • This is incredible. What is Chopin's recommended Metronome for this piece?
