  • Love it!

  • Great video!

How does SD1100 compare to Nikon? I also have SD1100 and would love to use it for timelapse as opposed to trashing the shutter of my astromodded T1i.

  • @avarakin - there's really no comparison. The Nikon DSLR far out-guns the SD1100 on most every aspect, esp with time lapse. For the sequences I used the SD1100, I had to sit with the camera and manually trigger the shutter every 27 or so seconds (13 second exposures, ~13 seconds of noise reduction in the camera, then camera reaction time when the next observation was triggered). After sitting 90 minutes of this, it was very tiring. ;-) The Nikon has a built-in intervalometer, which helps much.

  • @climbmd

I suggest to check out CHDK. It allows to take RAWs and write scripts including really fancy ones like Intervalometer with HDR. I did a few timelapses with my SD1100 and CHDK, works really well.

I know that Canon DSLRS are rated to do 100,000 shutter releases, Nikon should be similar.

I have no idea about rating of SD1100, but I would not care much if it dies.

  • @climbmd Use intervalometer;)

  • @SkyEurope1988 For what exactly? The D7000 has one built-in that I use already. :-)

  • @climbmd Yes, but i thought you say, that the 1100D don't have that built-in one as the D7000, and thats why you had to sat behind it and manually trigger the shutter every 27 or so seconds... Maybe i misunderstood you?:)

  • @SkyEurope1988 Oh, yes, sorry, 1100 doesn't have it, but I've also stopped trying to use it for night sky time-lapse, too. :-) It doesn't have the sensitivity level anywhere near the D7000. :-)

  • @climbmd Interesting, because i have success with it:) ISO 3200 and 30 seconds exposures seems to be good for me for night sky time lapses. I also made several other shorter exposed time-lapses from city-life (traffic etc.), they look pretty as well:) .. or at least for my eyes...:) But maybe i will load up a video somewhen, and we will compare;) Cheers, and have nice exposures!:)

  • @SkyEurope1988 Are you using chdk to expand the capabilities of the 1100? I'm aware of chdk but haven't explored them. How is the noise level with the 1100 at 3200? Do you have noise reduction on or off? The basic 1100 has some pretty bad noise at 1600 ISO, even with the built-in auto noise reduction. I would like to see what TL stuff you've done, certainly.

Maybe after I master the Sky-Watcher with the dolly I'll start looking into this chdk stuff closer. :-)

  • @climbmd Oh no, absolutely not, just the original menu system. Well i am in the adventuring phase :), but of course there was moderate noise at ISO 3200, but considering the fact its not a 7D, 5D, or 1D mark IV, it is really doing well. (for me) I've heard several drawbacks about chdk, so i wont use it. Take a picture with these settings at once, and we will compare the two if you want:) Some weeks from now. (noise reduction off, shutter release or intervalometer) cheers!

  • @SkyEurope1988 Really?? You have an SD1100 that goes to ISO 3200?!? 30 second exposures?? I've three, they only go to ISO 1600, 15 second exposures. Then they sit for 13 seconds, either applying some noise reduction algorithms, white balance, and/or writing to the SD card.

  • @climbmd Canon 1100D

  • @SkyEurope1988 Ahhh, Different beastie than the SD1100. :-)

  • @climbmd This time-lapse dolly cost a fortune, way too expensive, maybe i will make one for myself later, when i will have time. If you have some experiences, dont hesitate to tell me:)

  • @SkyEurope1988 Yeah, the DP dolly is expensive, but was cheapest around that I found for what you got. Saved up for a while to get that. Don't have any other experiences to relay.

  • @climbmd I try to show you my result in some weeks. Hopefully will look great without the dolly as well:) Are you willing to load up some other staffs made by your dolly? I would be really quirous about that:) 3 cameras from the same:) fanatic?:)

  • @SkyEurope1988 I have a number of other videos loaded up here. The dolly is used in some of them. The West Virginia Nights and the Maryland Climbing videos both feature dolly motion in many or most of the scenes.

I am currently working on two new videos: Maryland Nights 2 and West VA Nights 2. Both feature sequences with the dolly, and I am also going to be adding in a small telescope tracking mount for added dimensions of motion. I hope to have them done by spring or summer.

  • @SkyEurope1988 PS: I would like to see what you can do with your camera set up there. I've seen some good time-lapse videos without a dolly, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. :-)

  • @climbmd Soonly i will check in with my video, and i will share it with you;) Your other staffs are amazing work as well. Telescope? Hmmm, show me the results when you are ready:)

  • @SkyEurope1988 I look forward to your videos.

And it's a tracking mount for a telescope that I'll be using for the camera, not the telescope itself (field of view WAY too small for that!) :-)

  • @avarakin - Also, I'm aware that there are hacks for the SD1100, but I've not explored them. But that said, the Nikon's ISO range far surpasses that of the SD1100 (which is good up to 400, decent up to 800, and noisy as heck at 1600; the Nikon is pretty quiet noise-wise even up towards 6400)

  • fantasic time lapes

  • Great job- looking forward to your future pieces!

  • That was lovely. I lived in MD for many yrs before moving to the Pacific Northwest. MD is a beautiful state. Your film was lovely and the music was a great choice! If you're only beginning, I can hardly wait to see more!

  • Really outstanding and inspiring!!

  • look great! look forward to more!

  • WOW - Fantastic!!

  • I-Man, this is fantastic! Really awesome for your first time!!!

  • @vripley - then you're really going to like the WV Nights one when I finish it. :-)
