  • This car is an absolute beast in GT5 even sounds ok considering the poor job overall in the sound department.

  • As a teen, I saw both the fan car and the big wing Chaparrals race at Riverside in the mid 60's. They were much faster than their competition, though mechanical problems with the gadgets (the moving wings and the fan motors) made them not completely reliable...

  • Love this car. When im driving it online people say theyr hearing a jet go by at the moment im starting to pass them. Hahaha drives very very good. With a steer or controller set to response sensitivity 3.

  • lol @ the spoilers

    ?/

  • @wildcatz123 you don't know anything about Chaparral.

  • why cant modern cars be this cool

  • I think I can remember having a slot car from TYCO like this...a vary long time ago

  • Did you see the extreme fast bird at 0:06 xD

  • Jim Hall was such inventor - it´s sad that he is not recognised more here in Europe. I mean it took Colin Chapman 10 years more to discover ground effect, though in a different way. Gordon Murray was also probably inspired from Jim Hall creating the Brabham fan car.

  • This car sucks

  • IS THT SKINNER COMMENTATING?!

  • legal

  • My bettle faster than this

  • You people are idiots who fail to recognize historical greatness of these cars. You know nothing about racing.

  • high rearwings

  • when i first saw this car in gran turismo 4 i was like wtf is this dumbass thing...then i had to race against it.......................lol

  • @DocHavoc0512

Well, how'd you do against it? You can't leave us hanging.

  • A magnificent car... such a shame that innovations like this are stamped out by the racing authorities... I wonder exactly where we would be now, had they not.

  • @SQUIZZLER24

It would be interesting if there was a racing class that had no restrictions except you can't be a hazard to other cars.

  • This car made me rage in gr5...its almost impossible to beat in the historics races

  • @romeroremor Guess you just need more skills then =) Both tuningwize and when it comes to playing the game I guess.

  • I was laughing at this car in GT5 while tailgating it, it looks like a shoe box, but it's still a great car. I agree with the top comment it's X1's great grandfather. xD

  • A line of weird ass cars!

  • those cars look stupid

  • @4582ferrari

They were designed to be fast, not look pretty for pretty boys.

  • if u look theres also a 2D in there

it also looks like a tin box on wheels

  • Chaparral 2J "The Box".

  • That car looks really stupid with that giant wing.

  • When it first showed up at a race somebody described it as looking like the box it came in. A genius idea in an unlimited displacement series (as the Can Am was) so the engine that drove the fans to create the low pressure under the car didn't count against the car. When the fans were turned on thecar settled several inches. It was banned under the "moveable aerodynamic devices" rules that eliminated driver adjustable wings as were on the Chaparral 2E.

  • Bring back Can-Am!!!

And I don't mean that stupid 3-wheel bike-car retard child!!!

  • it's a bed with a jetpack;D

  • HAha.. it's the car from GT4 lol

  • Thumbs up if you searched for this car after seeing it Gran Turismo 5

  • gt4 brought me here

  • vacuum cleaner

  • Actually, this is the X1's great grandfather.

  • not only fast, but it cleans the track as well. Now thats what i call green.

  • @599ferrari and spits it right into the cars behind!

  • @599ferrari See? it's possible to make a green car with a 7 litre V8

  • from the rear it looks like top gear's electric car XD

  • @uncanesciolto i loved geoff

  • One mistake, they dont know how to change rear wheels xD

  • I saw this car at GT5 and I thought:

    This isn't a real car...

  • @bonnemannetje it is real and in its days it was so fast that it was forbidden to take place in races, was faster than Mclaren at the time

  • Sorry, I'll keep my X1. :)

  • the fastest tissue box ever!

  • look it's R2D2!!!

  • relative to the red bull x1

  • @Mainiac1221 yeah only the red bull X2010 is like a ferret on crystal meth

  • @Mainiac1221 This is the x2010's grandfather

  • It almost looks like GT5! haha

  • It's known as "The Vacuum Cleaner"

  • The only car wear you can literally say "suck it" to other drivers! ;)

  • @Clay3613 not really the only car,

    Brabham BT46 too

  • @Clay3613 don't forget the brabham BT46B f1 car!

  • @crustydemonsully that Brabham was obviously a copy of the Chaparral 2J ;D

  • lol i saw this while driving my viper in gt5

laughed my ass off even tho it was faster than me when it used its rocket power!

  • Why is it Chapparal isn't around making road cars? They would be absolutely insane. I just love that big washing machine going around the track. Looks stunning.

  • LOL I first saw this on GT5. I call it the rocket powered sled

  • it looks like it's from that movie little rascals

  • It looks like a pedal boat.

    But it rocks.

  • 0:16 got enough wing the buddy?

  • I must say that it looks absolutely hideous - but it is brilliant and a very clever car.

  • @MistrzKubica

Yes, but in that case the driver's would have been forced to use G-suits like the pilots on fighter jets have. With fancars producing insane amounts of downforce, we'd see 8-10 G's in the corners. Can you find a driver fit enough to deal with that in an entire 2 hour race?

As a matter of fact the ever increading cornering speeds were bad enough in 1982, the last year of ground effect, so the banned it in 1983. Later they introduces groved tyres to slow the cars down...

  • what is the car with the big spoiler?

  • @clarktista1 i think thats the 2E

  • :O 2J 2D! :D

  • Thumbs up if you noticed the Rabbit at 0:06

  • @GranTurismo360 Sorry pal, rabbits are not able to fly unless you throw them really hard.

  • chaparral made a car reach 350 km/h in 1970

in 2011 it would reach 450!

  • @CCbadboy90

This car does have its own child.

    Red bull X2010!

  • @CCbadboy90 Is that factoring in inflation?

  • its a washing machine.

  • cool

  • it sounds like a airplane

  • I didn't know that washing machines could do that....

  • @MistrzKubica Red Bull x2010 in GT5 shows how it would be like.. too bad a further development never took place

  • @OnXatSwe That monster is faster than grease lightning. I would think any new drivers to that car in real life would need to go through some simulators first just so they don't trash it.

Then again, I was driving it with a DS3 controller, not a wheel so... who knows.

  • the rear-spoilers are not very gorgeous :S why are they so freaking high?

  • @patser090 The spoilers are there because the car just don't have enough downforce. Its also movable, thus helping cornering. Beauty's not important over function and aerodynamic efficiency.

  • @patser090 in the rime spoilers were something experimental. It's like the first airplanes, or the first cars, they were more for investigation, than for looks. Chaparral was one of the first makes to include wings to their cars, in the 60's not even Formula 1 cars had wings, just look at Daytonas, mclarens, and other race cars of the time, all their wings looked weird.

  • the rear-spoilers are ugly :S

  • spoilers are ugly :S

  • mmmm looks like this concept of designing cars will be the future for hoovering above ground

  • it's too bad that they forbid this, i wonder how the f1 cars looked right now if the enigeers had permission to develope further on this

  • @spikeyss1 it would look like Red Bull X2010 in GT5. Ground effect, turbo v6. Easily pulling 6g when cornering. Calling it running fast isn't approciate. Call it flying low.

  • What the hell is up with that ridiculous huge spoiler?

  • @Midnightclub3king you're right i think its not nice and it probably tresholds lots of mph's

  • can't chaparral make a car thats not completly crazy looking besids the 2D car also what was that car at the end of the line at 0:20 it wasn't bad looking either

  • @racered94 Fact is, their "completely crazy" looking cars won several races, and had the potential to kick everyone's ass once all the little problems were sorted out. But other constructors (McLaren) lobbied the racing governing body to have them banned on the basis of their moveable aerodynamic features. Jim Hall was forced to moved on, sad really. In Indycar racing he was was quite successful with Johnny Rutherford driving his 2K. Well done Jim! These cars in order are the 2E, 2F, 2D, 2A, 2J.

  • i hate this car in Gran Turismo 5 >:( i

  • lmao that wing at 0:17 is so fucking stupid!

  • at the time, it was banned from competition in many races due to it's extreme grip ability... thanks to the vacum apparatus... I like how people used to think lol

  • I see ricers.. >:D

  • The 2j sounds like a fuckin aeroplane.

  • Realy weird to hear two engines doing different things. Nice though.

  • banning this was a crime to racing imagine how fast we could be going if cars like this where allowed to race

  • spin the fans the other way and u get the best vacuum cleaner!

    lol

  • @vargaadrianteofil

    Huh? they are already sucking....

  • LOL! The tiny, tiny two stroke drowns all the other engine sounds!

  • The 2J really sucks, LOL

  • @almostrucus2 lol, I think not. It was banned when it was raced, sort of unfair. Wasn't allowed to have an engine powering the fans lol.

  • incredible engineering. This car creates downforce while standing still, something the ground effect formula 1 cars couldn't do.

  • is that a jet engine on the back?

  • @colj001 2 fans on that back to suck air from underneath the car

  • @rampageturke if memory serves me correcttly, didn't it have a snowmobile engine driving the fans?

  • @jenie0 yep learnt that of gt5 its on there and is EXTREMLY FAST

  • @colj001 Its not a jet engine. Its two massive fans that suck air out from under the car. So you have less pressure under the car than above the car, this pressure differential creates down force to suck the car onto the track. It basically turns the entire car into an upside down airfoil.

  • I really want to drive that car once... It handles like a dream.

  • Hey, don't you remember that this idea was used in some F1 cars at early 70's ? but of course with much much better finishing

  • @gkwas think brabus made one was banned after its first race

  • Adrain Newey, uses this concept for the Redbull X1 super car, that says allot about the advanced thinking this car represented. Where are the Jim Halls of today?

  • the fastest washing machine on earth!

  • Those Wings on the back look like freakin Arbors!! Lol.. Why park in a carport, when you can take it with you wherever you go...

btw, I agree with the Drivable tissue box comment...

  • it got outlawed because apparently the fans throwed stones at the opponents - nothing that a bit of chicken wire won't solve.

  • this is a plane

  • I may be wrong, but didn't they outlaw this car because worked too well?

  • @slydewinder Yeah, unfair advantage. Now known as 'ground effects' it is the use of airflow underneath the car to achieve more downforce, with his car he used a snowmobile engine to 'suck' the car to the ground. Really awesome and the specs prove it, it gained .5g's on the skid pad when the fans turned on, very impressive. If you read a full article about this car it really is amazing .

  • it must be funny to drive that car lol xD

  • What a brilliant household appliance!

  • What a brilliant household appliance!

  • very ugly m....fu...r

  • nah it's not a fridge, it's a washer/dryer!

  • hehe cool car-it looks like a bed or fridge on wheels :-D i drove it in gt4

  • @tatar1942 Yeah, it grips like a barnacle! I wonder what kind of speeds the real car can pull on the curves?

  • @tatar1942 Yeah, it grips like a barnacle! I wonder what kind of speeds the real car can pull on the curves?

  • @tatar1942

    lol

  • @tatar1942 You drove the vacuum cleaner Chaparral? You have to share that with us.

  • Jim Hall and Vic Elford= Chaparral!!!!

2 cool guys in a cool car!!!

  • Go snomobile engine vacuum!!!!

  • Today's f1 cars could theoretically drive on the cieling at speed

  • @WLSLPK any car that creates positive downforce could, given enough speed

  • The Brabham, an 8 years later copy of Jim Hall's wonder, did win the only GP it raced being banned the next race. It gave proof Chaparral once more had created at that time a car that would be difficult to beat and maybe, still more, impossible for others teams to copy, so complex and elaborate it was. I expect this is the main reason why it was banned at the end of the season. Jim Hall, same breed of genious as Colin Chapman and Caroll Shelby. Respect !
  • super cool !

  • como en gran turismo 4 !!!

  • estan todos esos autos!!

    lo mejor el GT4

    saludos

  • its on GT PSP too

  • como en gran turismo 4 !!!

  • one of the worlds fastest 3 speeds

  • it got outlawed almost immediately because it gave so much advantage sucking it to the road.

  • Not entirely true...it was outlawed at the end of the season. due to complaints from the other competetors, and the FIA/SCCA said it violated the no 'moveable' aerodynamic device rule...pity really. Although it has been said that it generated enough "suction" to keep it firmly planted on a ceiling!...WOW still trips me out thinkin about that to this day!

  • @MichaelIanHenry

Let me remind you 2 examples the rules of racing car world where changed in favor of competitors who had no other way to outbeat others. In 1968, all major manufacturers of potentially wining racing cars where banned -Ford, Ferrari, Lola,

Chaparral- Matra, otherwise potent gun maker, hoped to take the lead. They did not realized Porsche was progressing so rapidly, they had to change the rules again in 1972. In 1992 Peugeot did the same

    with Porsche, Mercedes, Aston, Jaguar

  • i saw it run at 1970 Cam Am at riverside, it didnt seem all that fast . then . and it broke down during the race. you could hear the 2 snowmoblie engines when it passed by . Most everyone who saw it there through it a stupid design.

  • Yeah the Brabham BT46B is much more smarter..Using the engine to drive the fan is lighter and simpler.

  • Not really, it would be more complex to run a drive system off the motor, which would also account for parasitic drag. Bolting a small snow mobile motor (light weight 2 stroke, simple as it gets) to some fans is simplest.

  • Can barely hear the BBC over that snow mobile engine. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

  • it is a vucuum

  • el primer coche que sale que es una cafeterA?

  • SO boxy, but so nice.

  • Chaparral 2J A.K.A Drivable Tissue Box

  • don't think that this Tissue box is slow.. its VERY fast...

  • big block chevy with 3 speed auto. yeah.

  • with downward sucking action XD

  • @syketo a freaking fast tissue box, oh my..

  • 2J - The best :D

  • awesome vid 10/5

  • Love that likttle box. LOVE IT.

  • Loving this vid! Thanks for sharing. :-D

  • this car is just un-believable!!!!

  • Sweet.

  • Look at all those beautiful Chaparrals. He made some of the most gorgeous cars to ever hit the tracks. Mmm, sex right there.

  • @FoxGTR34Nismo fuck yesss!!!

  • So cool to see all those Chaparrals running at once. Saw the Chaparral 1, 2A, 2E, 2F, and 2J with Jim Hall in 2001 at Road America. You can really hear the 2 stroke engine powering the fans on the 2J. Great video!
