You have never lived until you see the Divine Miss M perform LIVE! The woman Is A powerhouse of talent! Infact, due in part to her,& her Music,I have Been released! I thank my lucky stars for this woman! Much love!!
For those who have never seen the Divine Miss M perform, my sympathies. She is one of a kind, a great star and some of the singers today shouldn't even be singing compared to Midler. I was lucky enough to see her in Clams on the Half Shell on broadway, a performance in Westchester a few years later and two years ago in Vegas. How blessed we have been to have such a talent.
@DETROITBULLET I Shall Be Released is a very emotional song, and particularly when you sing it like Bette does, you know there's some personal emotion behind it.
I was fortunate enough to have been at the Roxy for this performance with my best friend. Any negative comments regarding the Divine Miss M are unfounded and unknowledgable- You haven't LIVED until you see this GIFT in person. Period.
Want a good female-sung version of this song? Then listen to Nina Simone (it's on YouTube). This version is too "dinner theater" for my liking. But hey, to each his own.
Has a revivalist quality to it. Entertaining in its skilled performance, but I'm not sure that was the nuance intended by Mr Dylan. Always thought Chrissie Hines had the best cover, at Bob fest which thanks to Sony and their complicit partners, youtube, has been erased as though it never occurred.
@rvcrvc2, I love Chrissie Hynde's BobFest version, too, but you should check out Elvis Costello and Robbie Robertson's version from 1995 - it's really, really good.
Thanks, Dirk! This is another one I was there for. Tickets were like $15!!! Can you imagine?? After seeing her in large venues like the Dorothy Chandler, it was amazing to have such an intimate evening with Bette.
just astonishing. the defintive cover of this song. the way she stresses the words "any day now" is very deeply moving. The version in the film of the Divine Madness concert is better but not by much. Viva Bette!
No one has ever covered this song better than Midler, (in my opinion) in her live Divine Madness Tour circa 1985ish?. Check it out if you can find it on youtube I can not but have a copy of her tour. And I'm a Dylan fan, but great respect when it's due
Too bad all the negative comments have never been lucky enough to see her perfrom live - there's really nothing like it. Too many productions today are so over produced they lose the raw emotion of the music. Nobody does that like Bette!
@DrivingMissCrasy it is not necessary to see the devine miss m in person. i never have, but I am as certain of her big heart as I am of her immense love and spirit. whether she is performing, reclaiming land for parks, or cracking jokes:) she is simply lovely.
Thank you for adding this - it brought back wonderful memories as I was at this show for my birthday and still have the photos of Bette & the Harlettes
I think you are SO wrong, she is still very much 'The Divine Miss M' - certainly Live!
Disney quashed Miss M while she was on contract, but the moment she was out of that she was back to her old self on stage,
Even under Disney Miss M lerked and would show her face (all be a family friendly version).
Her music matured - as indeed she did, but she could hardly keep producing new versions of the same album for the last 30 years regardless of how good they may have been.

i was at one of the performances at this gig...what memories...i'm so lucky to have seen her so many times thru the years live...thanks for sharing this!
Once again you made my day!! Thank you so much. Bette singing "I Shall Be Released", my favorite singer, singing one of my all time favorites! I don't know where you get all your wonderful clips from, but I'm so thankful you share them. Thanks!!!!!!!!
danke sehr für Deine Videos! Du lieferst lauter leckere Bissen, weiß nicht, woher du das alles hast, hoffe nur, dass es auf dem Lager noch vieles gibt :-))
She made my life much better. She taught me to try to be original (special). So much is lost on trying to be successful now.

The instrumentation is lousy. That piano player just comes off as way too cookie cutter. Same with the flute. HOKEY HOKEY HOKEY.
How could Bette midler's singing possibly be the best part of a song? Wow.

you're absolutely right, no one can sing like the
Divine MIss M. too bad bette midler isn't Miss M anymore
and hardly divine. i remember her saying at the Palace that
the great, the near great, and the lame have performed
there. who knew she would cover all those categories
in the span of her career. too sad.
