  • my moms the one who cuts his hair

  • Ok,it was super fast, but it was super clear picking too!

That matters to me the most.

    Congrats!

  • Zane, incredible stuff! You have to post some more of your work! Fantastic picking, really inspires me to practice or just give up playing all together! Keep it up!

    Your friend,

    Bruce Herrmann

  • Attaboy Zane. Tony Rice WHO??? You da man =)

  • Fantastic playing by both zane and greg.

  • Who is Greg? He sounds a lot like Zane. Both sound GREAT!

  • I'll give you a few facts about Greg. He grew up in McDowell Co. N.C. When he was about 15 the 'Judds' came and offered him the job to play with them. There was an Ovation plant in the county at the time and Bill Kaman followed him around all the time. Gave him all kinds of Ovations to play.

  • I saw Zane at the Opra house in Maggie in 1999, He just seemed like a Precious youngan! He had a good spirit about him. My family fell in love with him, and his whole family!!

  • Hey Guys,

    Great picking.

  • Zane, Mr. Fairchild and Greg are good friends of mine. I got to know them when Zane and Mr. Fairchild played on the Grand Ole Opry.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

    With Love from Nashville

  • I used to see greg when I lived in marion he was burning it up then just like in this video. I used to see zane up in cherokee and was amazed at his picking and always wondered what it would be like if he and greg got together. my question is answered HOLY CRAP! please post some more video of these 2 monster players. JD

  • Did u ever go to Old Fort and jam at their mountain music store?

  • Come on, great guitar playing is great guitar playing whether it's in a living room or in a stadium where 60,000 people saw and enjoyed it. This was great guitar playing.

  • I saw zane on bluehighways TV just the other night. he was part of the "super pickers" segment with dale & don wayne reno. they picked some blues sounding instrumental and they wore it out. don wayne aint no slouch on the guitar and the bass player was really laying down some nice grooves. zane & gregg take guitar playing to another level! thanks for posting but please work on getting the quality of the video more clear on the next one and PLEASE post more videos of these cats. lee thomas

  • lol Yep like I figured a jealous guitar wanna be.

  • great pickin'. this is mark o'connor's 'dixie breakdown'? very well done.

  • Hi, Zane -

If you have a clear copy of this thing could you post it? At least you'll represent yourself the way you want to, and people can see how great this demonstration was. It's obviously very impressive. oh, post some pictures of those chicks, too.

  • I saw Zane at a bluegrass festival in Ohio about 12 years ago. He was playing with his Father banjo Icon Raymond Fairchild and zane just knocked me and my wife out with some of the most amazing and slick guitar playing I have encountered in my 45 years of going to festivals. much appreciation for posting this fantastic video of two virtuoso guitar players. Keith McElroy

  • The original video is crystal clear. Whoever posted this clip evidently screwed it up through Youtube. I have the original and it is in FOCUS! Z. F.

  • Sweet pickin. If you have the video in focus then post it.

  • I used to see zane perform in michigan years ago. Not only is he a VERY talented guitar picker but he is also a VERY talented ladies man :) Love Amy K.

  • Great skills. Keep up the good work! PS At what point did the pick melt in your hand? LOL

  • Zane's a friend of mine... Got an E-mail From him this morning actually... Hands down one of the greatest acoustic monsters of all time......

  • Great clip, and awesome picken... if you're interested in playing this kind of style try this... Dorian scale with the major 3rd and the flat 5th added into it, and change the key of the scale to fit the key of each chord in the progression, learn some chicken picken double stop stuff to throw in and you'll be whipping some stuff like this out in no time....

  • Man I wish it were that easy to just play a couple of dorian scales with a major flat 3rd and chicken pickin with a couple of sixteenth notes thrown in for good measure and I could sound like these cats but its not that easy.

  • I'm not trying to take anything away from these guys, they're obviously awesome pickers, I was just giving the basic notes to playing this kind of stuff. Also what would be the #7th note (ie: Gflat - G - Open string G type licks) are used quite a bit as well. They're not throwing in 16th notes for good measure they're playing 16th notes through much of it. No such thing as "natural" talent, it just takes a hell of a lot of practice.

  • If a hell of alot of pratice is all it took I would be the worlds greatest musician, but IM not! What I mean by "natural" talent is some great players are born with the talent to become great players. I know tons of people that practice and practice like hell, but they don't play like these guys. And these little child prodigies that are playing Mozart by the time they are 3, yeah, the must have practiced in their Mothers womb.

  • We all start out at the same place, able to play nothing. Not only do you have to practice but you have to practice wisely and include not only physical abilities but also mentally understanding the basic music theory behind things... If I can't understand something then my physical abilities to tear it up are very limited. I haven't seen any 3 yr olds playing mozart but I'm not saying they're not out there.

  • if it were every aspiring guitar playing including yours truly would have a video on you tube. it is very obvious these guys have worked hard on getting the perfect right hand technique and working hard at their craft. Learning a few scales and playing chord progressions won't make You sound like greg and zane it takes a whole lot of natural talent and a hell of a lot of practice.

  • I remember seeing clarence white at the ash grove in the 60s and his playing caught my attention and no guitar player since has done that until I found this clip of greg and zane. Thanks for putting this up, it made my day. 5 stars! John Shufford

  • Some of the best flatpickin' i have heard! you guys kick butt!!

  • The last story I heard about Zane was that he was running around in his diapers in a bar near Fairbanks Alaska. That was a few years ago! It's great to see he turned out to be such a monster player.

  • I think greg does session work in and around knoxville, don't know what zane is doing these days. I agree these guys need to be touring. good luck on tabbing this tune.

  • does anyone know if these guys are still playing? some one said zane does session work but i can't find out any thing on greg. these cats need to have a cd out with the 2 of them playing like this. this is killer stuff. if any one can tab this stuff out i would gladly pay you for the troubles. Richie Britt

  • I play electric guitar and some acoustic but nothing like you guys. love the blues sounding groove zane does at the end too cool dude. rock on guitar slayers. Richie Britt

  • Damn FINE pickin'!

  • Great flatpicking. Yes, I hear some Tony Rice and Mark o Connor but,at the same time these two gentlemen have put there own spin on it too.

  • holy crap

  • I have a cd with Greg playing Electric guitar burning it up but havnt been able to find acoustic albums.I also think he was a winfield finalist I think he is a session musician today

  • No doubt both Zane and Greg have their own flavors and there are some of Rice's influences. (but who hasn't been influenced by T.R?)The video is dated '97, why not anything recent? Just curious as I would love to hear more. Absolutely great rhythm playing by the way!

  • I can hear bits of O'connors playing in each, but Zane has definately been influenced by Rice, but still has his own flavor and Greg is also totally different. Notice that You don't hear any pick noise from Zane either. Zane's rhythm playing also kicks butt!

  • These guys are great players for sure ,however as far as originality Mark O'Conner's Dixie Breakdown from the album "Markology" recorded in 1979 is the solo to emulate. These guys have definitely heard that album as they pattern their leads after O'conner's.

  • To this day, after seeing great guitar players like Tony, Cody Kilby, David Grier and Bryan Sutton, I have never seen a guitar played that fast with so much finesse and smoothness. I think Zane is one of the top 3 guitarist I have ever seen period, super nice guy, but very very shy and quite.

  • and some guy yelled from the audience why did Raymond play it so slow? was it because the guitar player couldnt keep up? well without saying a word and Zane with a RARE one time grin, procceded to absolutely play John Hardy at warp speed.

  • Please don't call this country. It's bluegrass

  • Don Reno called it Dixie Breakdown. Great tune! Good pickin fur sure!

  • Like hearing Doc Watson and Jerry Reed togehter. Incredible!

  • as good as bluegrass guitar gets!!!!sounds like a don reno tune but i cant remember the name.

  • I hate country, but you undeniably have crazy skills! You should go on tour or something... country fans would go nuts!

  • You guys should be touring!! Great musicianship!!

  • This is it....

THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN DREAMING OF!!!

    COUNTRY MUSIC RULES THE WORLD!!!

  • I saw on a forum this is Zane Fairchild and Greg English what is the song?

  • Damn!!!! That is unreal. Thanks for posting. Man what talent. Wow
