  • Hello! I'm hoping to visit a bruderhof community soon in England, would you know of anything of etiquette for instance that I should watch out for or anything I need to be aware of

  • I am trying to find patterns for the simple veil and pleated bonnet as well as large size dress patterns, do you know where I can get them?

  • Excuse my ignorance, but I've never heard the term anabaptist before. What does it mean?

  • @MadameSheep It means "re-baptise" and started out as a sort of slur because Anabaptists don't believe infant baptism to be valid (because it's not a conscious choice by the person baptised while they know right from wrong) and so would baptise adults who, when they first started this a few hundred years ago, would've already been baptised Catholic as babies. They saw it as first valid baptism. Outsiders saw it as rebaptising.

  • It's a very a beautiful song. Who is singing it?

  • Thank you for this! God bless!

  • @ozarkcrafter Hi, I am glad you enjoyed it!

  • Good video, Lacha. I liked how you pointed out that there's a freedom in dressing plain. I find the same thing. You don't have the constant pressure to conform. People treat you differently.

Out of curiosity, do you know what type of churches are in the pictures at 0:27 and 1:42?

  • @SeekYeFirst1 Hi, the first is probably people from the Charity Church, the second is of an Amish family.

  • @LachaFliuch Very interesting. I'd never heard of Amish that wear veils.

  • Its like the difference in "styles"from a time period. As another example I could use Jesus who wore modest regular clothing of the day VS John the Baptist, who did not follow the "style of the day" and instead wore animal skins. The anabaptists I am most familiar with are the hutterites, because I was a teacher on a colony. I remember looking at different styles from different time periods with them and we could see the periods these dress styles came from. Similar time period as orthodox jews

  • Of course "plain dress" isn't really plain..it was the regular fashion of a particular time period. They just don't keep going with the times, they choose to dress according to regular fashion of a particular time period. Like the Amish, they DO use technology..but only up to a certain time period. The Plough? Horse and Buggy? Hammers? Buttons? These are all "technologies"of a particular time period, but technology none the less. Plain would be wearing a simple cloth! Perhaps a robe.

  • @SkinnyWmn69 Hi SkinnyWmn69, for centuries Anabaptists have been regarded as plain by others.Wearing a simple cloth in many countries would not be sufficent for protecting people from the elements (cold, snow, rain, ice).

  • @LachaFliuch I understand that but the first anabaptists wore regular clothes of the day. People of other faiths do the same thing, for example muslims and orthodox jews dress in a fashion they consider proper but are really just the "style"of a particular time period of history. Orthodox jews actually dress very similar to Amish/Hutterite men with the black pants and coat, the black hat, the beard...orthodox jews got this "style" from the same time period of history.

  • @SkinnyWmn69 in a sense that is true but Anabatists would have worn more modest versions of the regular attire of the day.I find it interesting to see old photos of Amish and Mennonite people because they close fitting attire and black dickie bows they wore back them would not be considered modest enough now! Most Anabaptists tend to be more modest in attire now than they which is an interesting trend considering people generally are most immodest than we were 100 years ago.

  • @SkinnyWmn69 I can comment a bit on Quaker Plain Dress here too. Yes, Quakers would've dressed in the general style of the day--when sewing a new dress--but would've removed any unnecessary frills or lace, as not being plain enough. Then, keep the dress til it's worn out thoroughly, and before you know it, you're a decade out of fashion. Eventually, taking a step out of the world's fashions became the way of things, to set apart, and intentionally retaining old styles came in.

  • Very good video!

  • The word "modest" in the NT passages related to women are not addressing the amount of skin revealed or the tightness of a garment. They are addressing the question of cost. (In the way we might say, "He lives in a modest home.") The examples given in those passages as to what constitutes a lack of modesty prove this. Thus, a woman in a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt she bought for $3 at the Salvation Army is dressing more modestly than one wearing a $100, custom "plain person" dress.

  • @termsofusepolice hi termsofusepolice, modesty is indeed about wearing clothes that don't show our every curve and in saying that expensive clothes is not modest, however deut 22:5 does say that women should not wear mens' clothes & vice-versea. There are some sites that sell expensive plain clothes but to make a plain dress or to buy one on ebay is quite cheap.

  • @LachaFliuch That is what "modesty" means to you. And I can respect that. But it is not what modesty meant to the apostle Paul. The opposite of Paul's call to feminine modesty was "braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes". It was not bared shoulders or exposed ankles. This is a fact. If folks want to order their lives according to unbiblical traditions, they are free to do so. They just shouldn't claim that those traditions are taught in the scriptures. It's not honest.

  • @termsofusepolice

Hi, I never said that bared shoulders were modest, but why do you see ankles as immodest? They are not described as immodest in the bible.

  • @LachaFliuch Hi Lacha. I never said bare ankles were immodest. I don't think they are. I was just trying to make a point. Please show me even one place in the scripture where the female body is dissected and its acceptable vs. unacceptable "shown" parts are defined. Such definitions simply don't exist anywhere in the Bible.

  • @termsofusepolice Hi termsofusepolice, Deut 22:5, 1Cor 11, 1 Tim 2:9 and 1 Peter 3:3-4 are the bible verses that I base my attire on.

  • @LachaFliuch Hi Lacha - My wife wears skirts in the summer that exposes her calves. She also has several summer blouses that expose her arms up to the shoulder. Would you consider such clothing immodest? If so, why?

  • @termsofusepolice Hi, I won't consider that immodest.

  • I have decided that I am going to start dressing plainly, and doing more. I have been cooped up in the house for a few years due to family illness, and I need to find myself. I see the Amish, Anabaptists, Menonites, and Quakers, and I just feel like I should adopt some of their traditions. I want to get my hands dirty, and grow a garden, make my own clothes, and just sort of take myself away from some of the modern day things. I enjoyed the wonderful video :) *Patience is one of my weaknesses.*

  • @SashikuChan that's good! I would advise you to slowly change to dressing plain otherwise it will be quite hard for you to chsnge so suddenly and for those around you to accept. If you take it slowly people will have time to accept the new you. Good luck!

  • Very interesting. The dress of these folks is actually nice to see , especially with having to look at the 'latest fashion' of guys walking around with their pants half way down their butts,.. nasty.

interesting community, i would like to learn more

  • i really liked the clouthing but can you please tell me can i cut my hear ones in a wile? i mean it's not a sin? because i don't know? and please tell me how to do the head covering thanks! God bless

  • @marianapenza sorry I meant to reply much sooner.I'd internet problems and them a family member in hospital so I didn't bother with youtube.

It's not sure if trimming one's is the same as cutting one's hard. I occasionally trim an inch off my hair to get rid of the ragged ends to revent split ends causing damage and I don't see any harm init. However I don't get my hair cut. It's really down to personal conviction.

  • Thank you for posting such a nice video presentation about Plain Dress.

  • @AnabaptistChristian a pleasure!

  • Ever notice, Plain children dress like their parents. In American society it's the opposite, parents dress like their children. Big difference. Who do the children have to look up to? Parents should be looked up to and respected. Look around and see what I mean. To garner respect you must first respect yourself. Set a good example. Don't copy those you're trying to teach. Is it any wonder society is the way it is? Think about it.

  • @Dick49311 thanks for the interesting thoughts.I had not thought of it that way but there are times when I just cringe at what I see other women wearing.

  • A well put together video. I enjoyed it. I am not anabaptist but I dress very modestly and wear a kapp and feel God has led me to do so. I have such peace and contentment for doing so.

  • @ozarkcrafter I am glad you enjoyed it.I wear a hanging veil and have a cape dress. It leaves me content.

  • Thanks for this vid. It's great.

  • @NewMeNow2000 thank you for your kind compliement.
