  • I have to say that The Godfather may have the classic status but I honestly feel Bob Fosse's direction of "Cabaret" was genius and filled with much originality and style and pizazz. I think it is one of the best wins the Oscars have ever selected.

  • julie andrews is so freaking beautiful!!! i wish i had that subtle beauty which she has <3

  • Holy shit! He sorta looks like Roy Scheider!

  • @Sevmarick Roy Scheider played Bob Fosse in the film All That Jazz. I grew up thinking Scheider was Bob Fosse until I got old enought to realize they were two different people!

  • @MrMovieGuy71 dude I know Roy Scheider was Bob in All That Jazz thats why I said that

  • Fosse was a TRUE genius!

  • Cabaret is obviously a more intricately woven, surprising, and original directorial achievement than The Godfather. In many ways it is more dramatically effective. This makes Fosse deserve this award. The Godfather won Best Picture because the writing, and overall cast performance was better- every performance in The Godfather was great, the overall performances in Cabaret (besides Grey and Minnelli) were not that great.

  • oh and btw fosse must have put severed horse heads in the academy members' beds, cuz there is no way he was going to win this

  • bob fosse is a genius in the music industry. he defined an era. without him, cabaret would not be what it was today. cabaret is just brilliant.

  • Utter robbery. Coppola's craft and dedication was masterful!

  • @ewanmcfadyen Godfather such a basic film though. Did you see Cabaret. Amazing directon and looks so modern compared to most movies of that era.

  • worst banter ever.

  • Julie's dress is unusual and I like it.

  • otra injusticia del cine junto la de ford coppola (Godfather) antes fue Stanley Kubrick por (Spartacus) la de Peter O'toole(Lawrence de arabia) y Richard Burton(Beckett) bought eight nominations...injustice

  • cabaret is better film.difficult to make than godfather

  • Coppola is like "So they hated it. I knew it." (His Suit)

  • "Godfather" producer Al Ruddy later admitted that, at around the time of Fosse's win, he was seriously considering tearing up his acceptance speech. Of course, as we know, he needn't have bothered.

I remember watching this ceremony, where, essentially, the first half of the evening belonged to "Cabaret, the second to "Godfather," up to, and including, Sacheen Littlefeather's (Anna Maria Cruz) notorious non-acceptance speech.

  • Watch out his moves as he steps on stage, his slim figure and his posture! A real dancer, wonderful choreographer. Funny he got an award as director.

  • Francis Won the DGA...for Godfather....Cabaret won 8 Oscars..including Fosse for director!! BUT no win for Best Picture. Steven Spielberg won his first DGA for The Color Purple..BUT WAS NOT nominated for an Oscar. Ron Howard won for Apollo 13..but wen to da drunk guy Mel Gibson, for Braveheart. Ron Marshall won the DGA for Chicago...but wen to Roman Polanski for The Piano at Oscars. AND...Anthony Harvey won DGA for Lion in Winter..Carol Reed won Oscar for Oliver.

  • coppola should of got it . . .

  • COPPPOLA IS NATIONAL TREASURE

  • I love his mention of Gwen Verdon - God almighty, did this man deserve the Oscar that year! If only the Godfather hadn't come out the same year. Liza's mom had the same trouble, when Wizard of Oz came out the same time as Gone With the Wind.

  • what is Julie wearing? IT looks like something Bob Fosse would wear!!! lol

  • coppola looks high off his ass.

  • I love Bob Fosse for his having been a hard-working man who was deeply engaged with art, leaving money and fame on a second stage. Few artists in the states have these characteristic. I only wish there were more men of the kind you were. My deepest respect to you, Mr. Fosse.

  • Look at the caliber of movies from that time. Todays the movies have nothing to do with the directors vision - they drop the director from a pool and then work on the marketing.

  • brilliant man.

  • Because the best director not necesarily directs the best picture Oscar. If that were the case every year, what's the point of the competition?

  • i don't understand why they give director to one movie and picture to another.

  • Because the best director not necesarily directs the best picture Oscar. If that were the case every year, what's the point of the competition?

  • 'Cabaret' was a tour de force : its edgy mix of savage choreography and incisive editing ushered in a new language for the film-Musical.

  • Coppola lost 'cause of his green tux.

  • @mlnreplyer Cabaret lost BP for the WRONG reasons.

  • @pudgeuncle the only reason it didnt win best picture is because the godfather is 1000 times better. no more to be said

  • great award!...but what terrible banter between Andrews/Stevens..

  • George Stevens presenting the Best Director Oscar? Can you imagine the Academy doing similar nowadays?

  • Was George Stevens sleepwalking that night?

  • LOL...fosse,what a legend!

  • "Cabaret" deservedly won its 8 Academy Awards. It was and remains one of the greatest movie musicals ever made. Bravo to Bob Fosse, Liza Minnelli, and Joel Grey - - all winners!!!

  • Coppola and Fosse went up against each other 3 times -- 72, 74, and 79. If anything, switching their wins would have made sense (Lenny is a much better film than Cabaret), although Coppola should have still bested him then too (and Roman Polanski should have beaten them both). In 1979, they were both more deserving than the winner, Coppola much more so.

  • Bob Fosse -- One of the Greatest.

  • Fosse and Coppola also went head to head in 1974 (Fosse for "Lenny"), but that night Coppola got his revenge. I don't think I have ever seen Fosse so gregarious and upbeat. I'm glad he won, though Best Picture went to "The Godfather" ending "Cabaret"'s winning streak.

  • Coppola should have won best director for the first Godfather. That way Roman Polanski could have win for China Town.

  • Just love Julie Andrews

  • Me too, she is wonderful!

  • Now I know why Coppolla did Godfather 2, he wanted that Oscar he deserved that night.

  • @robertlaf actually Coppola has said that he didn't want to do the godfather trilogy , but he did them because he needed the money... or something like that.

  • DId anyone notice Desi Arnaz Jr sitting next to Liza? I think they were dating then. :-)

  • 1973, what a year for Bob Fosse! A Tony, Emmy and an Oscar all in one year!

  • Julie Andrews' gown is so dated. No one could wear it nowadays.

  • It was out of style for 1973 but still pretty!

  • @marcosvalenca

What about FFC's tux, he looks like he's going to the prom!

  • Aww Julie :)

  • Yes, Fosse totally deserved this Oscar. He was pure genius.

  • @ildico1 over coppola? i dont think so

  • Francis Ford Coppola should have won. The Godfather is a masterpiece.

  • He won for "The Godfather Part II" anyway, so I think it's ok.

  • What the fuck is with Coppola's "suit"? I know it was the seventies, but geez... was he trying to look like a sleazy game show host?

  • I thought Oscar got this one right, Director to Cabaret and Picture to Godfather.

  • @ggfanjase

Totally agreed. The Godfather won the awards it deserved (Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Actor) and Cabaret won all the awards that it deserved to win (Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, etc., etc.).

  • Cabaret is a masterpiece and this is a deserved award.

  • Bob Fosse is amazing!! :D

P.S. Post Julie Andrews' win, please!

  • it is already on here...her full speech as well!

  • He really deserved this award. The Godfather was magnificent but Cabaret is nearly equally great.

  • @dinasztie the godfather ranks 3rd on afi's list of 100 years 100 films, cabaret is 63rd

  • @dinasztie ur comparing apples to gold u moron, no fucking way he deserved it over coppola

  • First comment!!! Thank you AMPAS for posting this, please post more old stuff, Clark Gable winning his Oscar, or Greer Garson's long speech. Oscar moments from the 30`s 40`s and 50`s please.

  • They didn't start filming until the 50s.

  • wrong the oscars were filmed going back to 1940 and change that vial screen name on here. its so tasteless and juvenile!

  • A) Learn to spell: "vile?"

    B) Learn basic grammar before you criticize the supposed juvenile qualities of others.

    C) That is newsreel footage and some of it is staged (much of the Gone with the Wind footage in particular). The official broadcast did not begin until the early 1950s.

  • By the way the godfather deserved this award ;(

  • 1st.

  • Bob Fosse is a really great director (Lenny, All That Jazz, and Chicago), but Francis Ford Coppola should have won this.

  • I disagree - Fosse richly deserved this award.

Coppola was properly rewarded with Part II.

  • Cabaret won 7 and still didn't win Best Picture. It was an interesting year for Oscar.

  • cabaret won 8.
