  • Have you read the "Secret Mark" letter by Clement of Alexandria? It's apparently about Mark going to Peter in Rome and taking notes from him to write his own gospel. I haven't read it, but thought you might find it interesting.

  • @edemaomega I haven't read that. I know, that Papias mentioned Mark deriving his account from Peter. He said something to the effect of Mark was Peter's scribe. It seems like a very peculiar statement, because Papias at least directly connects the Mark and Peter through tradition. Though, there are other motives at work at the time of Papias, so its difficult to say "who knew who" and what was really the motivation for authorship. Thank you for mentioning that, I should take a read on it.

  • why are you pronouncing Marcion's name like that? It's Mar-See-onn

  • Isn't it more likely that Peter was composed to explain away the inconsistencies, and therefore is a later work? After all, it would be illogical for the writers of the synoptics to introduce new inconsistencies, as this would only hurt their cause, but it makes sense that they would try to combine different gospels to get rid of all the contradictions.

  • @agnat86 You are assuming that the writers were working together.

  • @agnat86 I think I share the ideas others have replied on.

There are separate agendas at work. On the idea of combining the gospels, they did try around 180 with a Diatessaron. However, it didn't take. Not enough people wanted that book I guess. They probably though it was heretical to combine the texts.

And they weren't all that concerned about inconsistencies. They weren't all on the same page. It's even more curious, that after 2000 years the problems still haven't been fixed. ;-D
