@flexer122 The glass used is over an inch thick, specially treated and is resurfaced annually with a Kevlar based cover. Even a pick axe or high caliber bullet would be unable to create a tiny chip or crack in the glass.

It's mostly that the American firm who own the tower decided they should do something to make a visitor fee hike reflect a change to the facility, not to mention the hope of attracting more tourism.
