@MagnusTheSnake Honestly though, even without the thumbnails, he showed up with 'special plants' long after the tree motif had become obvious (even though York didn't seem to notice it until the very end), and only continued to show up in suspicious places. It seemed pretty obvious to me that his saplings sprouted from the red seeds.

@MonkeyBoy90 - I can't remember what explanation Swery gave for the shadows, but I don't believe that any of them (dogs included) are controlled by Kaysen or Willie. Swery did state, however, that Kaysen receives orders from the Red Tree through Willie, so Willie is more or less controlling Kaysen.

One thing I'm sad never got discussed in the SA forums is The General. He seemed to know the Raincoat Killer story was real back at the town meeting, and he could be over fifty, and there were military guys with Kaysen, I just wonder if he had anything to do with it. The soldiers seem to be too detailed to just be background characters, one's even standing like Michael and has glasses, why do that if you just wanted a generic soldier?

@GreyFox785 recycling models most likely. i always thought the general knew the raincoat killer story was real because he was probably a teenager or young adult in 1956 if he was an officer in vietnam, not a soldier yet. he was just old enough to remember it, and unlike the crazy old lady or the senile lady in the hotel, he still had a healthy mind.

I don't know what else there is to be said. Sure as hell didn't see this coming, I was wrong about a lot of things. I thought Kaysen and George would turn out to be brothers after Kaysen's mother story. A long while back I thought York was gay, actually.

I still maintain that not everything we saw happened however.

The story and Kaysen's character are NOT Lovecraftian. You can't just sling that label around at every extra-dimensional entity in a story, you're turning it into a buzzword.

They far more resemble something out of a Stephen King novel.

I mean, DP is far more like "It" than "Shadow over Innsmouth".

@kirbythecreampuff The trick is Zach WAS that way the whole time. That's why people kept remarking on his scar, while York found it odd since all he saw was the little scratch on his cheek. When he introduced himself it was always as Francis Zach Morgan. He just perceived things differently, he saw York taking the lead instead.

@SilentStormShadow To be fair, I think that York's whole purpose was to make it so that Zach wouldn't make such a decision. He probably thought at that point that Zach was ready to make his own decisions, and wouldn't just go and kill himself. But that was silly of him, because this is a 100% run.

I just thought it was ridiculous that one of the choices was to kill himself (because that would be the exact same thing his father did, and he was supposed to learn NOT to do that), becasuse York didn't go through all that madness in Greenvale just to have Zach shoot himself in the head--York would've been like "WHY ZACH WHY -- REALLY??"

Sadly the most we understand of Kaysen is his appetites, his ability to say whatever people want to hear and his love of feeling superior to other things by describing them in short phrases, dogs are always happy or humans are foolish. Each of his forms kept an aspect of growth which would fit in with his title of being emissary of the red trees.

I love how Zach just comes out as David Bowie with platinum blond hair and different colored eyes due to some kind of head wound.

@ZomBoy18 Seeing as York's role was to get Zach out of the white room it's likely that was a more direct way of getting Zach to focus. Now I'm starting to wonder how many of the movies they were referencing dealt with humans struggling with some supernatural problem or monster and winning. Kaysen was bouncing around like a killer tomato in his first form and was voracious as Jaws in the second. Not sure what the mega Kaysen could be like though.

I liked the forced-choice part, I can't really see any much better way to do it. One can hardly have the player shoot Kaysen and just end the story, yet it wouldn't be effective to just have the player shoot Emily without any input, as this would ultimately appear sudden, as if an important decision and acceptance had taken place instinctively in Zach, while in actuality he only does it because he finds no other choice. You must purge things; this constrainment seems the point of the mechanism.

@allhailtuna You're the first person I've seen who likes the BUT THOU MUST part. I don't mean this in a bad way of course, I agree with you that it was an effective way of dealing with the situation. I understand that people feel like it should have just been a cutscene, but then you would have the complaints of "Why didn't he just shoot Kaysen" or such.

It would have been nice had shooting Kaysen lead to a bad ending though.

@Assasin2 To be honest, though, it's probably going to have been the first impulse of most players to just shoot Kaysen. It may have been something of a hindrance to have this be a bad ending, given that it would essentially force the player to start the whole section over again for making that choice, and would cause the player's mind to stop focusing on the choice. As it is, they kind of integrated the bad ending element with not having to redo everything.

I believe Swery likes Shadow of the Colossus. I wonder if that final hit on Kaysen was an allusion to that. I like how they ramp up the duality theme here, with Kaysen's obsession with not being a 'little person' being portrayed through his large form and contrasted with his small doll, like George's weakness; a large part of the game seems to involve hiding half of oneself, and the seeds seem to enhance this effect. York prevails because he can see through it, and finally does so for himself.

@TKA001 He defeated a Cthuluesque monster because he's a normal human. Kaysen thinks far to highly of himself and far to lowly of humans, humans are strong creatures who can overcome any challenge or situation with a strong enough will, and this was Kaysens downfall.

@TKA001 Not necessarily the first time; he had been 'flapped' previously when Harry quoted his father, as well as when he saw a vision of Emily in the art gallery. Of course, these two were probably a foreshadowing of the fact that York/Zach was still trying to come to terms with his past, and ultimately lead up to this scene. I suppose that you are right in that this is the first time that the York facade became incapable of remaining in control and shielding Zach from his past.

@AlexdDark Theirs another Gun that Supergreatfriend didn't show off that's a little better for these fights, but you do have to remember that he's playing on the Hardest Difficulty (people seem to forget this) so the damage he does is lessened.

It's still not super fast or anything on the lower difficulties, but the guns do dish out more damage.
