  • Awsome!

  • i swear he looks like nigahiga of youtube!

  • He is absulately a fantastic musician and the most humble 19 year old I have ever met! During one of his tours, he came to our school and spoke to our students; he was most inspiring! If you want to boost the morale of your students or increase productivity in practice rooms, invite him for a talk, you won't regret it.

  • Mr. ZHANG's Ondine is superb. That's undeniable.

It's a pity the world is either indifferent or downright hostile to genius, unless it's pre-sanctioned and over-hyped by critics. There are MANY great artist who live and die in obscurity. Let us hope Mr. ZHANG is not one of them. He's a far better pianist than many of the legendary greats of the past.

    So, however, is Rupert Egerton-Smith.

  • Wow, this is probably one of the best interpretations I've heard of these pieces! I wonder if he teaches his students how to have a constant orgasm while playing? lol. Man, VC competition always inspires me to practice more.

  • Evanescent, mysterious, dark, seductive, passionate, melancholy Ondine. Breathtaking.

  • 太讚了!!

    張昊辰{his chinese name}~

  • A little fast, Ondine is a longing feeling in the beginning..he nails the climax great tho..and those friggin thirds *still has nightmares

  • People have said this is an astonishingly good performance, and has no where enough attention. I certainly agree that Mr. ZHANG IS A SUPERB PLAYER in a field overcrowded with such.

That is true also of the exquisite work of Rupert Egerton-Smith and many other extraordinarily worthwhile artists. Sad that people go for "names" and "images" and follow trends critics generate like sheep.

The world is full of wonders many of them unknown, dismissed and unappreciated, except by a discerning few.

  • i totally agree.... i believe Rupert Egerton-smith plays the best gaspard de la nuit, i have heard so far.

  • Thank you. RES certainly ranks among the best, but there are many superb performances of Gaspard out there. Have your heard Guelsin Onay's Ondine, for instance?

I wish people could understand -- as you apparently have done -- that touting the achievements of a relatively unknown artist like Rupert Egerton-Smith -- or Mr. ZHANG for that matter -- in no way takes away from the greatness of others. It's idiotic to regard pianists as GLADIATORS which so many here, apparently, do.

  • Who the hell is Rupert Egerton Smith and why do you keep mentioning him?

  • Look him up and find out.

  • You talk about him as if he's world class. He's ok, but you're doing him a disservice by hyping him so much. ...Are you Rupert (or Rupert's mother)?

  • @micheldvorsky You call him ‘ok’? I wonder, are you willing to post a video of yourself playing this piece…and playing it as well as this young man? I had the pleasure of hearing him briefly today in a master class. His technical understanding is vast, but his emotional maturity is that of a much older man. I am looking forward to hearing his concert tomorrow night!

  • @Norach415 he wasnt talking about Haochen lol. Read the comments.

  • Unbelievably beautiful. This young man is an astonishing musician. We were lucky enough to be present for his semifinal recital (when he was 18 years old!). Never have I ever heard the Chopin Preludes played better (and that includes a live performance of them by Rubinstein). His Ravel, especially for me the Ondine, is a masterpiece of restraint and interpretation. He got "it" however that it defined.

  • Totally agree!

  • Amazing. His "Gaspard de la Nuit" reminds one of some of the few legendary performances of the piece (Michelangeli, Pogorelich...). I'm looking forward to hearing more of this exciting musician in the future.

  • I think that this playing is deeply thoughtful, and personal. I will look forward to the first chance to attend a live performance in the future. You have many things to say. I really enjoyed the competition, and hearing this again brings back great memories of a truly unforgettable experience. Thanks to Van Cliburn!

  • This amazing performance does not have near enough views!!!

  • agreed/

  • Excellent but this is the "first" movement of Gaspard dela nuit: "Ondine".....

  • Yes and also some of Gibet, the 2nd, before cutting out. The complete Gaspard is on the Cliburn Competition website, though.

  • i want the videos of the piano-concertos!

  • You can hear all the contestants' recitals and all the finalists' concertos at the Van Cliburn Competition website. They have them beautifully archived in relatively high quality. Also the awards ceremony is there.

  • I know! But the videos break off every moment so the performance is chopped

  • this interpretation will become a legend!

    AMAZING!
