Of course, the routine was longer than it needed to be because the 3-litre container was already filled, so she needed to pour it into the 5-litre container and then an extra 2 litres. The quickest routine would be to fill the 5-litre container first, then empty 3 litres, pour 2 litres in, dump the 3-litre container, and repeat.

Or, having poured the 3 liters into the 5, refill the 3, top off the 5 leaving only 1 in the 3 liter container. Pour that in the solution, and then another 3, and you're done. Equally fast, but starting with the 3 full.

Of course, our ways show solutions, but not the process of trial and error.
