I generally don't care for Dan Fogelberg. He's just too soft-off and mainstream pop-like for my taste. But, I have to admit this is a pretty tremendous song. A classic example of "Anthem Rock." Addressing a very important social and political issue with intelligence and dignity. Great chorus hook, hard and heavy dynamics in the playing, great guitar work and straightforward, mature vocal delivery. Why didn't he do more music like this?

I love Dan, loved him and still cherish him, but like so many, he was tilting at windmills here. In this case, he was passionately (but naively) turning a "hot cause" into a virtual religion. Misses the mark. There are benefits and dangers in each energy source (VERY much including solar). How about writing/singing a song about being ethically responsible with ANY and ALL potential energy sources that come our way? Because more ~will~ come. God Bless Dan, all the same. Always.
Love the passion in Dan's voice on this, I agree most know him for his mellower hits but boy does this show how Dan could ROCK, and what great Stratocaster TONE in Dan's tasty lead work here.
It is a tribute to Fogelberg's talent that I have at times mistaken this song for a Neil Young composition. Please don't take that the wrong way, Fogie fans. Really, it's a complement!
I literally get a chill watching him nail the lead on this song, note for note with the studio version, but also with such passion. I wish the radio audiences would have seen more of this side of him, rather than just the mellower work. He's very underrated as a guitarist. Thanks so much for posting this video of Dan in his prime.
tremendous performer and writer who died much too soon. One of the best shows I ever saw was him in Ames Iowa on Haloween 1981--his bass player dressed in a devils suit. One of his best songs. Also saw him in 1978 with a guitar and piano open for the Eagles. Great voice!
Dan shows his fantastic ability to play guitar here, for sure! What an incredible "jam"! Simply loved it! Followed with "Run for the Roses" shows how truly diversified Dan was. Thanks pre10der76 for all of the wonderful memories of Dan you have shared!
They said on the radio that Smokin' Joe did play steel guitar on the LP version of the song but it was uncredited on the album. I'm sure a couple of Eagles members sing harmony backup on the original version of "Face the Fire." Only those who own the album (& I don't) know who the ensemble really was.
@writingtome - Al Gore's is a hypocrite of the worst kind! He keeps his house (castle) lit up like a realtor's wet dream yet still says the common folk should make sacrifices. I don't respect that! If Gore was truly an environmentalist, he'd practice what he preached by advocating products such as hemp for fuel, fiber, industry and so on. He'd also demonstrate by example how to provide energy to your house without being on 'the grid'.
What an under-rated rocker. He could certainly teach modern "rockers" a thing or two about writing hard pounding melodies! Thanks so much, nice to know there are still fans of Dan out there.
This song wasn't even on the no nukes LP, even though Dan was more passionate than most of the other artists about the environmental aspects as he and Jackson Browne continued the movement for years. Nice of you to post. Always glad to see and hear the maestro.
Thank you so much pre10der76 for letting us experience your video collection of Dan. I've been a fan since "Home Free" and have never seen any of these! Go Dan go on that sunburst strat! I detect influence from Joe W. in his playing.
GREAT VIDEO!!! Dan reallly rocks on this song-I really, REALLY love him playing the electric quitar on this one...one of my favorites! THANKS!!!! AAA+++ Always the "Sexiest Man Alive" in my book! ;)
The incident at Three Mile Island nuclear reactor, Middletown,PA in 1979 , may be the reason that prompted him to write about this subject. He performed at the Musicians Unite For Safe Energy "No Nukes"concert, Sept. 1980.

While I realize this song is about the dangers of nuclear power, it could also be used as a theme warning of the dangers of government encroachments.

Shame of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for omitting the most complete singer/songwriter/musician in the two decades, 70s and 80s.

I was very wrong.

my all-time favorite Dan Fogelberg song, one of the best guitar solos ever, more so on the studio version, but still great live.

I wish Al Gore would use this song for his environmental advocating. Dan was green before his time.
