Damn, I wish they could have miked the voice and guitar separately -- but even mashed together this is one of the most haunting yet rocking life and death records I ever heard.
The moniker "King of the Delta Blues" clearly belongs to Charley Patton. Only Son House is a worthy challenger to the title. People can have Robert Johnson...I'll take Patton anyday over him.
@alternatehistories One of the truest comments I have ever read. Charley was the master, and I'll bet if Patton had the chance he would have recorded just as many as Patton.....both were clearly far superior to Johnson IMO
@lostintheblues If u haven't seen it already - check out the live Son House video "Death Letter Blues" from Youtube user dsofrank. WOW!!!...even at an advanced age...House still "had it". He looked possessed - jerking around and rocking. They should've miked his guitar instead because his powerful voice doesn't need any amplification. By contrast, Robert Johnson's singing sounds like he has a clothespin on his nose.
this is otherworldly. so haunting. i cant understand most of the words but its not necessary. i think a mongolian nomad could listen to this and feel it inside just as well as any english speaker could. one of charley's best!
what everyone should think about is that charlie and his guitar were a single entity.
no one ever had the power this man had. his timing is enexcelled.
i just chuckle when robert johnson is called the father/source of the blues. i can think of several off hand that i find better. but patton had something else.
the drive of this and the dropped words filled in by the guitar are amazing.
@danversdon I have never heard robert johnson refered to as the source or father of the blues. Robert Johnson had an innovative playing style which patton didn't have but thats it. I prefer Charley patton over Johnson anyday of the week.
@wahdubi well there was almost 8 years between when patton first recorded and when johnson last recorded, and ...i'm not sure, but at least 20 years age difference or so
