He talks about the atom so condescendingly... i have used a 1.6ghz atom based netbook for 1.5 years straight now, and it has a lot of potential. A lot of flaws as well, the first gen has a higher power consumption, and heat output... BUT i have run windows xp, ubuntu linux, max os x leopard, and windows 7 on this netbook, and they all run well enough, as the internet is the main purpose of this machine.
Sure he's telling the truth.. The atom isn't supposed to be super performance, it's supposed to be super efficient. You get a mini board with one of those cpu and it consumes maybe 20 watts, perfect for laptop.. double, triple battery life.. perfect for headless server running 24/7, consumes maybe a sixth of the power of a modern desktop at idle.. I want one for my home server. :-)
My friend has a little net top (note book) .. 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM and it is quit good in performing common tasks usually we can do at some distant place e.g. office and all other heavy stuff would be on desktop at home having x64 AMD....
@TYRONEBIGGLES I remember playing Halo PC on my AMD Duron @ 850MHz, if even a medium amount of stuff was happening on screen it lagged up a storm 15fps style.
I got my Pentium D 3GHz a year later and man what a difference, currently on a 3.2GHz Core 2 Duo.
@Protoking the atom haves HT but the celeron does not, but the atom it goes a whole lot smoother. the atom N330 is a good competitor as it is like a quad core but not meant for anytype of heavy computing although it can handle 1080p but not from any flash such as youtubeHD and what not.
ok guys,, so question.. i have pentium dual core desktop computer, so that means that i spend more power that using a intel atom? but pentium dual core is faster that atom right?
ok,, i'm not saying that i'm right,, so feel free to slap me.. lol... it is like speed vs power...
Yes, comparing core2duo and intel atom, ofcourse the power consumption (around 4w for atom) is a big argument to adquire an atom... but u will always have slower cpu, may be in some future, with 32nm tecnology we will be able to have high-performance atom, but today is a good choice to do "common stuff" but an atom is not for gaming or extreme using....
i'm using a netbook which has a intel atom processor and i do everything on it from video editing to 720p videos.... literally everything.... i'm not sayin it the best processor in the world but.... it is capable of doing more than just internet/web based apps
i don't get the (standerd deff) junk my acer aspire one handles HD video just fine full 1080 rez scaled on the netbooks screen or full force conected to an external LCD.
mind you to get HD running smooth you have to turn off power saving mode in the netbook.
otherwise it tends to hickup every couple seconds it drops a few frames.
if i don't turn off power saving mode i get the same thing on my dell inspiron 1525.
how do you think atom stands compared to some other architectures like celeron, core 2 duo or even pentium....because i want to get a netbook but i heard that atom is really chunky and lazy in processor power. i'm thinking of getting like a cheap 15" laptop than a netbook, because size doesn't really matter, i'm really all about power and quality.
Comparing the two is dumb. Why not compare it to a P4 or a turd? The point of the Atom is for kids, schools and third world nations not for tech geeks!
I bought two of Gigabyte's Atom boards and they are pretty cheap for the price. Plus they are all solid capacitors. Thought they won't do heavy stuff, what you get is a perfect medium media PC for so cheap and they are so small. I just wish they had an AV output like some old graphics cards so I can run them to a television set.
Why are people talking about gaming? The fact is, you won't find better processors at this price point. I mean, it's $80 for a CPU and motherboard! Granted, you won't be able to game or do heavy video editing with it. In all fairness though, that pretty much holds true for all single-core processors. For someone who just wants a computer to check email and surf the web with, I wouldn't suggest another.
Atom is half the performance of Celeron, but the Atom runs at a higher clock speed, so it ends up being about the same in many cases. For example, a 900Mhz Celeron M is about as fast as a Atom at 1.6Ghz. That's the half the performance he's talking about. If it was running at the same speed as a Celeron, it would be half the performance.

Atom is totaly fast enough for anything you throw at it, add the intel X25-E ssd drive to this chip with basic onboard graphics, and I GARANTY YOU youll blow away ANY PC running a quad core, a regular hard drive, and a top rated video card!
a computer is only as fast as its slowest part! the storage drive! A cpu cannot fetch data faster than the storage can give it.
Atom is probably one of the best most energy efficient and most stable cpu's intel has ever made.
I could if i had a couple towers and intel chips and you drove down to me house but listen the only thing that makes a quad faster a bot faster is the 8MB L2 cache wich most liekly caches more ram
It's made for laptops. It's extremely energy efficient and it doesn't get hot. They use them in the EEE pc's and the other small laptops. Not really fair to compare it to Celeron. It's totally redicilous to compare it with a quad core!
am using one right now with vista installed, and a 1 gig of memory. it seems to work fine for the internet. the small fan that comes with it is junk, lasted all of 15 min, till it got to loud to stand.
the point is the atom chip is many fold higher quality in every aspect better than any uselessly over-watting and heating quad core desktop chip! a computer really does not need the high bandwidth and bigger latency of a quad core dekstop unless you have it hooked up to, say, a ramsan300 hard drive to notice a benifit, so obviously a home pc does not need more than a 350 MHZ cpu for any task. ive owned 11 computers from 266mhz to 3ghz. now on a 500 mhz.
pc marketers in the past have complained that crt monitors took to much desk space and pushed people to move to lcd even if it had lower quality image, yet king size desk space hogging atx cases are still around, as to why atx did not move to pico atx to follow the lcd space saving factor is a bigass marketing mystery about profit and greed.
Some of you guys commenting below are talking rubbish. I have the Vista sidebar cpu speed gadget displayed, and every time I open Internet Explorer, the cpu clock shoots up to 97% usage (Core 2 Duo, 2 X 1.66ghz). If I only had single core, it would take longer to open (it does, I have single core rated at 1.66ghz also to test). Also FSB speeds from each core combine.
this is why i hate reviews! theyre so company profit biased! ppl always get reviews that bring profit over truth! Hey this cpu fkn rocks and theyre bashing it because its not as profitable and expensive as their inefficient power draning cpus! heres my review! when you buy a cpu always get the most power efficient one with the lowest watts and remember this simple rule! A processor cant access data faster than the storage can give it! so cpu performance is not needed,, storage performance is!
dude wtf r u talkin bout!?!? speed always matters. no one fuckin cares if u save money on a cpu who uses less energy, seriously, ur processor doesnt use alot of energy, its the rest of ur shit, motherboard, graphics card. and this guy and fuckin bashin on the atom cpu at all. hes just givin his opinion and he says that its best for peop[e who use simple applications and the internet like kids. i like the processor for that its best for simple tasks and its portability. more power ='s faster. ok?
its not only about the lost fucking money and exacerbated ownership cost of inneficient overheating /over-watting cpus! its about having a fucking pc with no noisy pain in the ass clunky fucking fan! A little known fact is that the hotter a cpu runs the less performance it actually has because processors suffer more access latency when hot! heat increases latency in cpus its the same as ram! higher frequency = more heat, and more latency! Performance claims for desktop chips is fucking hype.
A 15 watt pico itx quad core 2.6 ghz would have the same performance as a 130watt quad core desktop. The atx format is over expensive and useless and overkill and not eco-friendly you cant even run an atx platform on a solar panel, so like I said this is the deal! ATX is inefficient, its overkill, its a waste of money,it overheats requiring a very noisy fan and its bad for the environment.
hey, senor stupid, if u wanna hav less performance and do simple tasks like using word or sending emails, well this is the one for u! well most people out there need power and dont give a shit about how loud with cooling fans are. i could care less cuz when im gaimng, i usually wear sumthing called a HEADSET on my ears and dont hear shit. do u kno wot the asus ee pc ??? hmm well thats a netbook which uses the atom processor and guess wot it can do?? Most PC users do not need power, most PC users use their PC's for work, the internet or play classic games which will run fine on an EEE PC (Dota, CS, etc)
Just because a game has realistic graphics, does not in any way mean its a good game. (Look at UT3 compard to UT2004.. 2004 shits all over UT3, Crysis is perhaps the only exception to this, it was a good game all round)
I didnt say that second part. but im saying is, many games out today demand alot of processing power and graphics power regardless of the ratings of the game.
Again this guy is a MORON. Truth is the Atom 1.6ghz is about the speed of a 900mhz Celeron M CPU. The whole point of the Atom CPU is that it uses 3 watts of power max which is amazing for the performance it puts out. Problem is Intel used regular chipset on its ITX board. The 945 chipset uses many times more power than the CPU which is a huge mismatch and a shame.
I dont know what the guys are talking about below, but when I changed my laptop with Core Solo processor (1.66ghz) to a laptop with Core 2 Duo processor (2 X 1.66ghz) there was a very noticeable difference in speed (same memory, same HDD) for everyday useage (internet, Youtube, Windows Mail ect.).
A pc is only as fast as its slowest part. The hard drive wont give the processor the data any faster even if the cpu's frequency and voltage is higher. if you want computer speed get a scsi drive, better yet, try a rocketdrive with xp if you can, then you'll really see a blazing speed difference.
techies definitely know that heat affects cpu performance negatively and intel really should make the atom equivalent for desktops like a quad core 500 mhz and 350 mhz for zippy aplications, and higher clocks cpus for gamers. anything over 350 MB/S is usless for simple aplications like firefox, winamp office ect
Solder is right! fanboys dont realize that the higher the frequency of a processor gets the higher the latency gets on that same processor, a 500 mhz processor actually has faster access times than a 1.7 ghz processor but the 1.7 ghz has higher bandwidth (wich is not necessary after 350MB/S in a pc, its the same occurrence as ram latency, the higher the ram frequency the higher the CAS latency.
A factor that can explain this latency is TDP and frequencies being to high generating to much heat
performance alone is no longer king after a certain bandwidth processors don't need more performance because you cant tell the difference anymore, there are even applications that run faster on a 350 MHZ then a 2.6 GHZ this has been tested and proven i remember performance tests done a while back but this does not show up on the newer review sites anymore, guess its bad for sales.
processors are already miraculous fast and don't need more speed upgrades anymore, i to believe the way forward for desktop cpus is maximum efficiency combined to the bandwidth they already have, or 4 socket true paralel processing because it has a sort of data compression effect like gpus. I read a comment about via eden cpus being 1 watt, so 4 in parallel on 4 sockets uses only 4 watts under load and give you the bandwidth of a pentium4 3.2-Ghz cpu.
Half the Performance of Celeron? does it really matter? one cant even cant tell the difference between a pentium2 350 mhz cpu and a 2.6ghz quad core when its running! why? simple, increasing cpu performance in frequency and cache only increases its bandwidth (just like ram) and after
300MB/S you cant tell the difference anymore
processors are now at 5GB/S (5000 MB/s) no application needs that speed and of course you wont notice a speed difference in upgrading processors
This June Intel will launch the Intel D945GCLF Motherboard with Intel Atom 1.8GHz Processor with HT Technology but I think the Intel D201GLY2 Motherboard is much faster than the D945GCLF since it has a Celeron 220 Processor 1.3GHz with 533MHz System Bus, The Atom has MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 Instructions and Hyperthreading enabled but the Celeron Processor that is in the ASUS Eee PC right now beats the Atom.. hmmm..
I want to see it paired with a radeon IGP chipset because I know from experience the Radeon IGP is usually 4x faster then an intel IGP.
I an Acer turion notebook with the radeon and a core duo Acer with an intel 950 and the first system does play video and games much better then the dual core.
An ATI video chip would compensate a lot for Atom's short comings.
But then AMD now owns ATI so it's not likely to happen.
If it gets an embedded Radeon then it might even be faster but if it sticks with an intel IGP yes it'll be slower but at least the battery life will last longer.
The CPU is only one part of the performance formula.
so what celeron???478 celeron,775 celeron D celeron dual-core??????

Atom is half the performance of Celeron, but the Atom runs at a higher clock speed, so it ends up being about the same in many cases. For example, a 900Mhz Celeron M is about as fast as a Atom at 1.6Ghz. That's the half the performance he's talking about. If it was running at the same speed as a Celeron, it would be half the performance.

For an X86 it is impressive though VIA's low watt Isaiah is at least fast as a Celeron now and is nearly as power efficient as Atom.
Though neither is very impressive when compared to an Arm or embedded PPC esp Nvidia's tegra.

BurtWilson1 3 years ago
A pc is only as fast as its slowest part. The hard drive wont give the processor the data any faster even if the cpu's frequency and voltage is higher. if you want computer speed get a scsi drive, better yet, try a rocketdrive with xp if you can, then you'll really see a blazing speed difference.
it boots xp in 4 seconds.

when it says the atom is half the speed as a celeron, does that mean clock for clock or just the differences between clock speed?
spencerpoyle2004 3 years ago
techies definitely know that heat affects cpu performance negatively and intel really should make the atom equivalent for desktops like a quad core 500 mhz and 350 mhz for zippy aplications, and higher clocks cpus for gamers. anything over 350 MB/S is usless for simple aplications like firefox, winamp office ect

This guys a MORON, the whole point of the Atom is that it only uses 3 WATTS of power is amazing!
soldersucker 3 years ago
performance alone is no longer king after a certain bandwidth processors don't need more performance because you cant tell the difference anymore, there are even applications that run faster on a 350 MHZ then a 2.6 GHZ this has been tested and proven i remember performance tests done a while back but this does not show up on the newer review sites anymore, guess its bad for sales.
when truth hurts sales you wont find
it easily
pcwizardz 3 years ago
so if you could put 4 intel atom cpus on a 4 socket board you wouldn't be dissin the performance im quite certain. ;)
consentualcannibalz 3 years ago 2
processors are already miraculous fast and don't need more speed upgrades anymore, i to believe the way forward for desktop cpus is maximum efficiency combined to the bandwidth they already have, or 4 socket true paralel processing because it has a sort of data compression effect like gpus. I read a comment about via eden cpus being 1 watt, so 4 in parallel on 4 sockets uses only 4 watts under load and give you the bandwidth of a pentium4 3.2-Ghz cpu.
consentualcannibalz 3 years ago
Half the Performance of Celeron? does it really matter? one cant even cant tell the difference between a pentium2 350 mhz cpu and a 2.6ghz quad core when its running! why? simple, increasing cpu performance in frequency and cache only increases its bandwidth (just like ram) and after
300MB/S you cant tell the difference anymore
processors are now at 5GB/S (5000 MB/s) no application needs that speed and of course you wont notice a speed difference in upgrading processors

Is he a sales person or a technical manager? Does he know how celeron perform?

This June Intel will launch the Intel D945GCLF Motherboard with Intel Atom 1.8GHz Processor with HT Technology but I think the Intel D201GLY2 Motherboard is much faster than the D945GCLF since it has a Celeron 220 Processor 1.3GHz with 533MHz System Bus, The Atom has MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 Instructions and Hyperthreading enabled but the Celeron Processor that is in the ASUS Eee PC right now beats the Atom.. hmmm..
johndarrell 3 years ago
I want to see it paired with a radeon IGP chipset because I know from experience the Radeon IGP is usually 4x faster then an intel IGP.
I an Acer turion notebook with the radeon and a core duo Acer with an intel 950 and the first system does play video and games much better then the dual core.
An ATI video chip would compensate a lot for Atom's short comings.
But then AMD now owns ATI so it's not likely to happen.
Membrane556 3 years ago
So..
If the Asus Eee PC gets the Atom processor during the summer, would that mean the Eee would get a downgrade in terms of performance?
Oneshot112 3 years ago
but you get an upgrade in terms of battery life.
celderian 3 years ago
Depends on what the rest of the chipset is.
If it gets an embedded Radeon then it might even be faster but if it sticks with an intel IGP yes it'll be slower but at least the battery life will last longer.
The CPU is only one part of the performance formula.

Is it a dual core?

Nice but at half the price of a celeron and 150-200 we will see.

It says half the performance of the Celeron, not price.
