The Blackbird uses (used) TF-30 engines with an afterburner system larger than the enigine itself. The design of the Blackbird uses cones in the front of the intake to regulate air into the duct. Too much air in the duct cause compressor stall which sounds like a big back fire. The X-15 used a ram jet not the SR-71. A ram jet doesn't use fans to create an airflow through the engine so it needs done naturally which requires air starts or in the X-15's case a drop from a B-52.

@LANewell2 Reee..... the x-15 was a rocket plane not an air breather at all. Used an xlr99 that used ammonia and "liquid oxygen" for propellant and hydrogen peroxide to drive the high-speed turbopump that delivered fuel to the engine. Never did it have a ram jet or any engine that needed to bring in oxygen. One of the reasons for its short range of 280 miles was limited load of oxygen.

@DMTxBrenWuzHere x-15 flew higher and faster, but it was not a plane such as the SR-71. It was a rocket pane that nneeded to carry its ow oxygen for its engine with a very limited range of 280 miles. They would not be in the same class, would be like compareing the sr-71 to the spae shuttle. X-15 was a test bed, only. The SR-71 was a true plane. And a good one

@dinglenutzz No just recon. The speed and high attitude made it perfect for this. There were no weapons on board. No guns, rockets, bombs, etc. just some great photo equipment. However it was the test bed for the early stealth material and designs. Wasn't invisible but still fairly hard to detect, and even if you did, there was little you could do to stop it (at the time)

Wow! I just took this plane up for the first time and got to 283k ft, beyond the reach of atmopheric drag, according to fsx. I don't understand how it is that the plane can just float down after that without burning up. But it was pretty cool. I ended up landing in a swamp somewhere in Manitoba. :)

FSX is pretty much awesome...if you are really into flight simulation for training though try x-plane, in my opinion x-plane is more of a professional simulator, while FSX is more recreational. FSX is still a simulator, but if you want good flight dynamics try x-plane, and in x-plane, you tend to get better FPS. the downfall is there is no a.i. traffic, but you can add some just like in any microsoft flight sim. I do own both and I recomend to anyone who love's to fly to try both sims.

Sorry if i offended you in any way, but have you even tried x-plane, all i was saying is that compared to msfs, x-plane has better flight dynamics than msfs, i wasn't comparing atc. don't get me wrong i love both sims, but at times msfs is 'sluggish'. and yes i do know Vatsim. my last post was a recomondation for other pilot's who are into simulation. so before you fire another random shot off, maybe think about what your talking about.

are you stupid? the Black Bird uses turbo-ram jets,which are basically turbojet engines designed to handle speeds well over Mach 2 sustained. The Blackbird's engines do afterburner.....how else is it suppose to achieve its near Mach 3.8 speed? the Blackbird does what the concorde does, bleed afterburn,which means its keeps its afterburner on during its high speed flight by adjusting the fuel flow for maximum performance while giving long range.

It's not in slew mode, if you hit "CTRL + Z" you will see longitude and latitude coordinates and a host of other pertinent info...airspeed, fuel, wind direction and knots...check it.
