KDE 4.3 on Kubuntu seems a lot more stable then 4.2 was on the same OS - shame that I'm finding a bunch of Kubuntu-specific bugs as well, though... lots of stuff here that wasn't in Gentoo...

System tray? There was one of those in Windows 95. Come on, think of something NEW. Don't just copy Windows or Mac. You even called it "system tray". KDE = for losers.
Besides: think of something new? What, you mean like Plasma, Nepomuk, Solid, many Dolphin features like split windows and 1-click select, tabs in (almost) all applications, movable panels, fully-customizable toolbars, KParts, KPackageKit, PolicyKit...? Oh, but none of that counts, because, you know... all they've done with KDE 4 is improve an already years-old system tray!
KDE makes WIndows ME look like the ultimate in stability and reliability. It's pretty, but it would take a miracle or an act of God to make it stable.
I tried out 4.2 on Fedora a while back. It would work for 5-40 minutes in between random crashes/segmentation faults. Not sure why our experiences are so different. Aside from the crashes it was great. Pity, I would have liked to have used it as my primary desktop.
Don't get me wrong, I am proud to be a Linux user, but isn't this pretty much what Windows was doing since XP? Autohiding applets in the systray? I'm more excited about what Ubuntu is doing: trying to phase out the systray entirely. If it's important, there's a more noticeable way to tell you, and if it's not, it shouldn't take up space on your screen.
I agree. I have moved to the KDE4 from Gnome. because the latter was getting more and more geriatric (small, often insignificant features + very modest plans for Gnome 3.0). Both environments suffer "be-like-Windows" illness. Things I would love to see in KDE: native dock and global menu as an option.
There's usually an unofficial Kubuntu KDE3 repository available, although I think it may be down at the moment because of a lightning strike. Some googling for "kde3 kubuntu Pearson" should get you all the current info. KDE3 is a classic, and it'll probably be around for a long while, but as for me, my resistence is at an end :)

The system tray has been in KDE for several years as well. They've just gone about improving it, which never hurt anybody.
On the other hand, the system tray in Windows 7... God, that thing is ugly!

I have been using KDE 4.2 with Mandriva for a while now, and had no crashes whatsoever.

Well KDE 4.3 is released today with many improvements, so hopefully that will give you much better performance than you experienced with 4.2.

KDE's had the ability to get rid of the system tray since the release of KDE 4.0, I believe - it just uses a different notification method instead.
From my point of view, Gnome's quite behind KDE.
