  • I want this video on my GT405 unit.

  • Those are acrylic nails that people such as this guy would use for fingerpicking. It's hardcore having one hand with those kind of nails. :P

  • That's such a cool lesson. Well done!

Apart from changing my profession, has anyone any tips on how to get the best out of finger picking when as a chef, it's not possible to grow nails?

    Much appreciated

    Andrew.

  • He's such a die-hard! He didn't bite his nails off

  • how long does it take you to grow your fingernails ?

  • Thanks for sharing this first video, very useful, very interesting for beguinners like me.

    Regards.

    Pierre (Belgium)

  • My only obstacle to picking like you is my attention span. I want to learn it in five minutes flat. Nice video, maybe I'll try. :-)

  • your fingernails are longer than mine...something's going wrong here... :D

  • @Horrorfairy666 better control, better tone, and better look with well trimmed nails is my outlook on things.

  • what is "G with a b base" at 8:22 ?

  • @hongyewu It's a G chord but you don't play the G note on the low E string -> B note on A string being the bass note of the chord.

  • ... one, TWOOO... and three)

  • I swear he just told me we'll be learning some fuck fingering patterns..

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

  • Nice ring.

  • hey Justin thanks for the lesson..great fingerstyle teqnique which sounds great once you have spent time mastering the fingering

  • Finger tips sound muted and warm. Finger nails are brighter and louder. Most guitarists have longer nails on their strumming/picking hand.

  • wolf-like fingers bleh

whats are the advantages of using nails to pick over finger skin?

  • dracula hands/fingers lmaoo

  • Try playing Kansas - dust in the wind, for practicing.

  • LOL

  • I watched this like 6 months ago and was like "WTF i will never get this." But now I'm fairly confident in my finger picking abilities. So if you are having your doubts about mastering this, have faith; its possible

  • @riceandbeans643 you really have to have that attitude towards anything you wanna learn. if you sit there and say "i cant do this" then you wont do it,,but if you apply your self and watch it and just keeping practicing piece by piece. youll get anything,,as hard as it may seem.

  • teen wolf!

  • u just flipped me off

  • you have vampire hands :-) gr8 lesson

  • Really rewarding video! Super

  • Thanks, Justin. this is just what I'm looking for. I'll probably go back and start at the beginning of your series now.

  • he flipped me off!!!

  • is that a sperm on his finger? XD

  • some people need to get a sense of humour :)

  • Man, that's beautiful... Thanks for the class... You're a great musician and a great teacher... Greetings from Brazil!

  • Really good, helped me a lot! Thanks!

  • its recommended that u HAVE fingernails to play guitar!

  • Thanks man!

  • @anhphu24041992 Aussie accent you philistine.

  • Doesnt it hurt to use fingernails to play? I'm afraid of trying.

  • @magichristo Use fingerpicks

  • huh reminds me of blackbird, anyone?

  • god bless ya for all this free stuff

  • Those finger nails are...grosse

  • Tee hee hee... middle fingers are silly! Tee hee hee!

  • 49 people are unhappy cause they are offended by the finger

  • Why isn't the pinky finger generally used? I'm not having too much trouble with it, but most videos don't include it at all.

  • @purplefloyd1739 Must be because of a lot of people can't seem to do it, but with guitar. whatever works for you is the best. If you can use your pinky, do it!

  • do my nails need to look like that

  • the sound of your guitar is brilliant, amazing, spetacular, it sounds like and old irish folk or something alike!!!

  • Thanks a lot :-)

  • 49 people couldnt get it down

  • 08:57 What is the name of the song? :-)

    Somebody can help?

  • @DanskeSange I am a big fan of Bob Dylan so I just had to find that song.

    I was googling

"He used sit singing one fog laughing"

After 20 minutes I googled it! :) It is

"It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe"

    DON'T THINK TWICE, IT'S ALRIGHT

    ;-)

  • @theNguitar Thanks mate !! My english is very bad so i couldn't here the words he was singing. Have a great weekend ! Niklas

  • 0:34 M ! Haha.

We love you to, Justin ;-)

  • Can you put up a lesson for Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Nobody goes in to detail with the picking pattern, Cant find a good lesson anywhere thx

  • Godlike! I like your lessons (I practise day after day^^)! In my opinion your lessons are one of only few really good lessons!

    THX a lot!

  • i don't want long nails :(, can i buy Finger picks?

  • I hate to get involved in the argument and will probably regret it, but TheMehike is kind of right...some guitar players use the "pads" of their fingers rather than the nails. It does soften the tone, but it's still usable. Kind of like the difference between a heavy pick and a thin pick. I cut my nails so I can use the pads of my fingers or pull the string a bit harder and they strike against part of my nail.

  • two

  • Haha the smile when he puts up his middle finger :P

  • EXCELENT

  • EXCELENT

  • FOLKIN' AWESOME MAN thanks!!!! folk ya

  • I teehee'd at your Bob Dylan impression

  • I got the finger somewhere....

  • haha

  • You need to clip your finger nails mate..

  • @lizoalex growing fingernails, enables you to play folk guitar better...

  • @lizoalex Umm I think he grows them especially for finger picking...

  • very good lesson! thanks!

  • Hey, very nice vid! check this one out: watch?v=GZ391oZO0yA its from Burg Grub, there's very nice Bagpipe music in it too ;)

  • fingers, one… TWO… and three xD ur awesome

  • A good song that's played almost entirely with this first fingerstyle is Matt Costa's Astair. He's a damn good Folk Rocker that dabbles in a few different styles. Check him out

  • excellent lesson Justin. Never seen it explained so clearly. Well done!

  • i had no idea you switch between the two base notes with the thumb, i thought you used thumb and index fingers...

  • goddamn, he just flipped me off.

  • Good to have tips, l'm a 2 finger plucker so it's teaching me to get out of bad habits, lol.

  • this helped a lot

  • you get really happy every time you stick up your middle finger.

good to know i'm not alone. XD

btw, helpful video. gonna take quite a bit of practice.

  • Another great lesson Justin!

  • what about the chords with the root on the 4th string?

i wanna play a song in D and i need the pattern for d major .can i do that?

    sry for my noobness

    cheerrs:)

  • i have been playing for years and making a living from singing and playing the guitar but i just can not get my fingers to do what i tell them ill watch your vid a few more times before i give up . i think i have a lot of bad guitar habits or my fingers are too stiff. cheers for the vid

  • Bookmarked this. Going to study it 'til my fingers fall off.

  • I could only play well with a pick until this lesson. I practiced hard for a year. See what I did with this pattern. Search; Alfred Navarro capo

    Thanks Justin!

  • great vid, but your nails gross me out!

  • M you!

  • Cut your nails? :))

  • @Dogge97Gangster

A lot of the world famous guitar players cut their nails especially for guitar playing...

  • @TheMehike That would be absurd for a guitarist who plays finger-style... unless they wear finger picks or primarily play jazz and muted sound. It wouldn't make a lick of sense on a flat-top steel string guitar w/ bright 80/20 brass or phosphor bronze strings.

  • @Hoopermazing

You have a lot of empty time mate....

  • @TheMehike I'm not your mate. I've never even fingered you, let alone screwed you and produced offspring with you.

  • @Hoopermazing

Okay lad! Here's the deal, the fact that you are an idiot, doesn't change the fact, that some guitar players cut their nails.

I will not answer to any of your comments anymore, because it's unwise to argue with an idiot, because he will drop you to he's level, and beat you with he's experience.

  • @TheMehike What a pompous and preposterous little 20 year old shit stain of a kid you are. I was playing fingerstyle guitar before your mother sucked off her first uncle. Some famous guitarists plant their pinky. Some famous guitarists can't read music. There having been able to overcome their poor habits doesn't make them correct or worthy of emulation. Now, run along and fuck yourself, little boy.

  • @Hoopermazing probably the best reply i have ever seen on youtube! also agree with what you say...

  • @Hoopermazing

Hmmm... got some personal experience about that cock sucking and self-fucking thing? Anyway you should really do everyone a favour and.... SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU LITTLE BASTARD I'M FUCKING OLDER THAN YOU ASSHOLE!!!

So, good luck and go burn yourself.

  • @TheMehike What happened to your decree about not answering my comments? I see that you are as full of shit generally as are your erroneous and uninformed opinions about the guitar. And, your assertion of being older than me is ridiculous. You're a douchey little spaz, and typing in all caps can't alter that fact.

  • @Dogge97Gangster try growing yours they help

  • a C7 major followed by a F maj with that rhythm is about as down under as it gets

  • Thank you, Justin. I recently gained an appreciation for folk, and the information you provide is exactly the jump-start I needed to begin learning to play it.

  • Really appreciated this video-great wee pick pattern that can go a long way

  • Awesome lessons. If you like fingerpicking folk style music check out me videos.

  • first thing is to grow nails like that, i find it bit hard

  • That's really clear and usefull!!!Thank a lot, a lot, a lot!!

  • justin guitar is BRILLIANT!!!

  • @theinck he's just sundercoe, not justin guitar xD, he rocks.

  • @jovifcp who in the blue hell cares. i was meant to say Justin's Guitar - its a maton.

  • thanks alot for this just get get finger working like this to make a sound that doesn't make ears bleed lol

  • @TraceurTaine sorry? What's so hard in going to the website and clicking download (it's in technique -> folk fingerstyle category I believe), not to mention that he actually says which chords he's using in this video

  • great lesson

  • I close my eyes...

  • Thanks for for the well demonstrated lessons.

  • Great lesson! Thanks.

  • ur nails are scary but i like ur accent xD

  • You're a great guy, the world needs people like you.!

I got my guitar in February 2009, knew nothing.

  • This video helps me a lot. Great thanks Justin!

    Realy cool dude!

  • thanks

  • probably the best teacher of all time

  • u r a damn bloody good teacher, justin.

  • Simply addicted! There are many a great players but few teachers.Justin,u are a great teacher!God bless you.

  • why don't you use the pinky nail when doing fingerstyle??

  • because the pinky is useless in guitar.. but if your confortable with the pinky finger, go ahead, and rock your way!

  • pinky is actually used quite a lot in fingerstyle, the concept of not using it, and using only those four, comes from classical guitar technique. and i think the lesson shown comes from a basic classical guitar technique routine as well.

  • Thanks man, the best instructor!

  • we all love justine

  • he likes M :D

  • Yeah, but i know the folk-american and....Folk fingerpicking is

    Finger "P" is for 6-5-4-3

    Finger "M" is for 2

    Finger "A" is for 1

  • ..and what do you think might be the reason for that : )

  • Justin is a professional guitarist and teacher, and he's excellent. His nails are one of the tools of his craft and aren't much different than most other finger pickers. Check some classical guitarists and you'll see the same. I tried it, but mine keep breaking.

  • they're fake, he wears them when he plays finger style
