"How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away"...THE all-time best song title, period. What a group, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks + the Lickettes. Saw 'em at the Berkeley Community Theater - whatta show. Possible 2nd best song title: "If the Phone Doesn't Ring It's Me" by Jimmy Buffett. Well, maybe.
As a Canadian citizen, I dedicate this song to Stephen Harper. And I'm sure the 60% of Canadians who didn't vote for him say the same. Thanks for the post!
I saw Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks (and the Lickettes) in Dallas between 1975-77. Naomi Weisenberg and Marianne Price = Lickettes, both ladies with great vocal talents...I never tire of his music...I love the quirky lyrics and upbeat, offbeat (not in the musical sense) jazz.
I saw Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks at the civic center in Wildwood,NJ...40 frickin years ago. Standing only 10 feet away I witnessed something that I never have forgotten, And I'm glad of it. D H H H L took me in a whole new direction of music. I was lucky enough to have seen The Joy of Cooing as well. P F F The coolest, yes coolest, thing for me is that I enjoy them more than ever, even after 40 years. That just doesn't sound right. PEACE...
Like Jimmy Buffet his music is difficult to characterise beyond sheer goodtime music, calling on bluegrass, country and western, swing and jazz (and being so out of it, that he sounds relaxed) in the process.
I'd love to know about the disrespect too. I would have totally loved to see these 2 at the same concert. I enjoy DH, and am a total Kinks fanatic. Maybe DH was just sarcastic but not meaning anything serious???? (doon't expect to see an answer, since the comment was 9 months ago....)
Dan Hicks played a free concert at Fresno State in 1971 and that was my intro to Dan Hicks. He was so awesome I went to San Francisco to see him again at The Attic for a New Years concert, and I can't believe I even remember this shit considering how drugged out I was at the time. I guess no amount of drugs can erase the awesome memories.
Saw Dan and the original Hot Licks as the opening act for the Kinks last show at Winterland. His disrespect for the Kinks was open and on-going. Fun show!
WHEN WAS THAT WINTERLAND CONCERT? EXAMPLES OF DISRESPECT YOU RECALL? THEY SEEM (DAN AND RAY) KINDRED SPIRITS WITH THE SAME TASTE IN LEAD FEMALE SINGERS...
i founld out about this song in a book called my top 5 and it had a list of wired song titles (true story)

I played his music until I knew every nuance, every word. His stuff is so unique. Where is he today? I'd love to hear what he does now.
