  • Please listen to Helen Reddy's version. Petula's is great. Helen is just great in her own way and style. Beautiful songs and beautiful singers!!! Cheers!

  • i prefer Lyn Paul singing this song (2010)

  • I've seen Blood Brothers quite a few times (sadly not with Ms C), and I saw Pet in Sunset about 13 times! If you listen to her recorded version of the song she brings out even more emotion than in this clip (which I still think is great).

Such a wonderfully plaintive voice, which is exactly what the song calls for.

I've also had the honour of meeting her many times post-show. She is a delightful, humble lady and a true star.

  • great precormance! I love listening to her on the cd, just amazing. it was also cool to see ruthie henshall, john barrowman, and betty buckley singing in the chorus! just a little bonus to a great song. only wish they didn't rush the ending. but alas that is what you get with scheduled television.

    thanks a lot!

  • Barbara Dickson is easily the greayest of all the Mrs. Johnstones. She doesn't need the backing of a hundred singers and musicians like ms.Clarke here. AND.....the part was written for Dickson.

  • I know it's petula clark and everything but to be honest this is auful compared to linda nolan in the west end

  • Sorry, not this time. I have seen Petula in other productions but for also having seen BB a few times, she's just not the right one !

  • My friend runs a website for the show. Go to my profile, or see my videos to find out more, or wahtever.

Including exclusive cast interviews, including Lyn Paul, Niki Evans, and Broadway's Philip Lehl, who played Mickey.

  • Those of you who want to see Emma Thompson in a version of this, raise your hand. (Raise it if you also feel Ms. Thompson should get the O.B.E., and be called Dame.)

  • I don't suppose you negatives have taken the time to read Willy Russel's own opinion on this ?

  • her singing is way too choppy

  • I have seen Niki evans playing Mrs. Jophnstone and all of my english teacher have seen many mrs. Johnstone and they all say she is the best however im not saying that she isn't brill because she is im just ssaying that my english teachers prefer Niki Evans

  • I saw this show in new york years ago and instantly fell in love with it, i was in london years later and saw it again and it still made me laugh cry and everything in bewteen absolutely one of my favorites when i hear the music from this show it can still make me cry

  • Hmmm, interesting. And who gives a fuck what you think Merlinmusical? Idiot.

  • Its Petula every time for me! she is a bit drowned out by the chorus here. she puts her all into this and I do find other version to be lacking somewhat but with Petula, you belive what she is singing about.

  • Petula is fabulous on record, because she found songwriters to work to her strengths, this is way out of her comfort zone as very uncomfortable to watch

  • bulllshit, I saw her in this show and she ripped your heart out.....so it isn't fucking DOWNTOWN......she is an actress, not just a singer. go listen to Britany Spearment and leave the real talent to the rest of us.

  • firstly calm down! I do enjoy real talent which is why I think Barbara Dickson singing this song is stunning. Petula sounds tired ,her voice is ragged in places and she cracks, and no thanks to Britney I actually enjoy singers who can sing.

  • No one pics on Pet- she saved this show from closing

  • I am aware of that, I have not said that Petula is untaleneted or lacks box office draw, just by this stage of her career she lacked the vocal stamina for musical theatre. I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

  • I have to get into this; Petula played in Blood Brothers in the early '90s, which in her early 60s, I think she did damn freakin good....yes she has sung for many years, her voice may not be like it was during the British Invasion but many others have played in this musical and well has been in the prime of their life, in there 30s to 40s....Petula was much older and much more experienced....she gave a very emotion performance.

  • this is just my opinion

  • I agree with you kidio222. Each singer singing this song brings their own talents, but this is by far the most emotional one. I'm only sad that her voice was drowned out in some parts of this song. I'm glad she sang this song because it's just beautiful. The next person that sang this song best would have to be Helen Reddy.

  • You are VERY WRONG Dame.

  • Petula Clark is a real star - talent, charisma and someone who has managed to knock out audiences for decades. Fabulous

  • Barbara has a better voice, but Petula gives a far more emotional performance. Barbara sings with the emotion of seeing a dead mouse at her feet, didn't remotely bring a tear to my eye. Petula was not the original on Broadway. It opened with a British cast that was unknown in the US. Petula and the Cassidy brothers were brought in to save the show. I'm from NYC and had never heard of Barbara Dickson until 10 minutes ago. She does have a lovely voice. She reminds me of Judy Collins.

  • Oh dear... maybe she was having an 'off' night? I have a lot of respect for Petula but this doesn't touch Barbara Dickson's version I'm afraid. It's on YouTube... check out the original and best. I know Petula was the original Mrs J on Broadway, but only because Barbara turned it down.

  • the show ran because of pet's name!

  • petula clark is a fab singer but i prefer barbra dicksons version of this song...

  • I thought this was wonderful!!! I love Petula. I think it's chilling when everyone joins in. I love the song. Thanks for posting!

  • I think Petula is a good singer, cant do Scouse though. Not as bad as David C's Scouse. I personally dont think Petula is a "Great" Mrs J though. I dont think she'd do as well at Liverpool Empire or Playhouse than Steph L (R.I.P), Linda N, Lyn P, Maureen N, Kiki Dee e.t.c. I'd also rather see Mark H & Sean J as the brothers than David C and Shaun(?) C. I just think people from the North and Merseyside can tell a fake Scouse Accent from a real one.

  • YOU ARE THE BEST PETULA and you just keep getting better jw xx

  • I have to Disagree very strongly...I have worked with petula clark and sang with her in the west end and her voice is not tired or shot and she may have popped abroad and worked but name me an artist of her status who hasnt...just because she fell in love and married a man in france doesnt mean she turned her back on uk or elsewhere because that is utter crap...she has always continued to tour uk,usa and everywhere you can just about think of...so people get your facts right before you judge

  • Petula is a stunning performer. She's a very talented and properly trained actress which is why she still moved me singing this demanding song with, I admit, an over extended voice. I agree with expetfan's comments about Petula's bitter sweet voice not being ideal for this sort of torch song. I think her plangent voice and refined musical intelligence were wasted on this sort of theatrical stuff..but there you are..just my opinion.

  • Damehood ? Really ? For an artist whose career went south some 40 years ago ? If you listen over the so-called interpretation, you'll notice that she grins, growls, groans and gasps for air, all to cover the fact she no longer sings. That doesn't mean she's without talent: au contraire ! Her voice is simply "shot" from over-exhersion. Broadway can do that even to the best trainees (remember Julie in VICTOR VICTORIA?) and Pet's bitter-sweet voice was never meant to be strained that way... sorry !

  • I, personally, think Barbara Dickson's version was SOOO much better!

  • thats rubbish linda nolan is a better mrs johnstone by far

  • How could u say that, we all know petula is better

  • Well, you're as entitled to that opinion as I am to mine. Petula Clark rocked Broadway with with her portrayal. To each his own, though. I'm sure Linda was good, as have been many other Mrs Johnstones. :)

  • Wow - she is fabulous singing this song!

  • Fabulous performance as always • Many thanks
