Apart from the intro i especially like when he says "i´ll try a solo" and the faces of people when singing the chorus, it´s a little bit weird, don´t know exactly why. Being said this i must say that Randy Newman in this video reminds me a lot to a teacher i had and also a friend. And also i´d like to say that i agree that sometimes one is dead but don´t know it but as long as one enjoys everything may be fine.
@techfan0712 i didn't really get when randy said, "Your best work was with Wings" can you explain it to me since you seem like you know what it means. thanks
meh, i think if he's doing anything, he's telling those lame old guys (the rolling stones, the who, def leppard, lynyrd skynrd [sic], etc.) who think they should be doing live shows to sit their asses down.
Um... actually, no -- the audience members are the ones who are.... dead, dead, dead. Were they, like, passing around valium before the show? I'm pretty sure they don't even know what they're clapping at. Lobotomies in seats. They love Big Brother.
They say but one word, and they seem to know what that word is. But they just sit there listlessly -- look at 'em! Arms crossed, heads drifting to the side, eyes half open. Plus, they were understanding his jokes about McCartney and such, so they must understand English at least moderately. This is just bizarre. Why would they pay for this unenthusiasm, which is no fault of Mr. Newman's?
I will say this, though: for an audience, they are remarkably, unbelievably, uncannily in tune.
No fault of Randy's - but this audience sucks. They botch up the end of the song big time.... Randy however, is a GENIUS! Who else can poke fun at their own perceived career status? I hope he goes on and on and on and on and on...
...at 5:53 they're all supposed to shout "you're dead!!!" (that's how it goes on the record anyway) ...to be fair to the audience, however, Randy didn't tell them either.
Hehe... never retire.... I know some people who love their jobs so much that they'll never stop doing it 'til the day they die, and even then, what they've done lives on in others...
this song is so great!

The version on the album is vastly superior to this live version. On the album, it is head-banger city.

I've always taken this song to be Randy giving the finger to the young snots who would tell him that he's irrelevant.

they are just not so familiar with his lyrics, and their english maybe not good, so have mercy on people who after all paid to see randy newman!

i think i remember hearing something on npr about how crowds will always find themselves in tune, by the law of averages or something like that.
