the clear lighter runs out fast too. the bic is definately the best in my opinion. alot of hardcore survivalists would throw a fit about carrying a lighter but, a LARGE bic weighs mere grams, so why not carry one? it IS always good to have backup.
Hello I understand petrolium jelly is good but I tried rubbing Isoypol alcohol and cottn balls and it burns for 4 min and it can be used for first aid, wich vaseiline(petrolium jelly) check my channel tomarrow after 5 pm and I will have a video of cotton balls with rubbing alcohol starting a wet stick and wet wood fire
the dull knife problem can be solved real easy carry a portable knife sharpener i carry SMITH'S pocket pal works great .I don't carry lighters 90% of my fires are started without matches or lighters. You can carry those individual packs of alcohol pads or hand cleaners or a bottle of the hand sanitizer which i get in the dollar store just to name a few and all you need is sparks no matches sometimes i carry pieces of rope soak in lamp oil long burn time when ignited.
here is an idea M.R.E.'s have the "metal container" verry flammible also the drink mixes (lemonade tea koolaid stuff and also non-dairy creamer) are flammable use these if you dont have the fuel bars also the food it's self has magnesium in it. there is a chance your shit will be flammable.
not to complain or anything but with the lighters there. not all those lighters run out the one on the far left uses butane and it is water tight so it does not leak out. also if u wanna get butane inserts for the zippos then u can do that on ebay for a reasonable price. other then that it was a great video
you can use also a 9V battery plus steel wool, just touch the steel wool with the + and - battery poles , the wool start to burn and just lay on top of it paper , it work great
Excellent video. I agree it is best to carry a few fire starting tools. I wanted to point out that inside the zippo lighters there is a bunch of cotton so if it is out of fuel and the flint is still good, you may still be able to get a fire going. Just an observation from personal experience.
the saw blad makes mor smaller sparks and those sparks are hotter than if you were doing it with the knife. the knife sparks are more like small shavings but they burn a little longer
To get a good refillable lighter get a peanut lighter a countycomm for 12 bucks they basically last forever watertight and break proof and light fist try their also super small
This is a great video! I'd only say, use the back of your knife to shave or ignite magnesium or Fire Steel respectively. Of course if you're using a folder, hold the blade (duh!) With any fire starters, both practice and preparation are keys.
Great video, I have a few tips for you. Strike anywhere matches have a safety hazard to them. They can ignite simply by rubbing together inside your pack. Also nail polish waterproofs matches and you don't need to remove it before striking. It'll also keep your strike anywhere's from self lighting. Wax, I've found is messy and has a real habit of flaking off the matches when temps very by large amounts.
Thank you for your informative presentation on fire starting tools. Although one day I'd like to learn a technique for fire starting with just found materials from outdoors, the firesteel is so much easier and reliable. Imagine if poor Chuck Noland (Castaway) had one of those... probably would have lasted him the whole time he was there on the island.
Btw, I've found lint balls made with vaseline to work better than cotton. Good slow burning fuel.
just my two cents...if you had to use your knife to scrape either magnesium or firesteels, use the tip of your knife. in my experience the carving area near the base of the blade is much more valuable for survival tool making than the tip. the tip does have its uses but i'm more willing to sacrifice the edge on my tip as opposed to the edge i use for carving. fwiw...
I saw Ray Mears Using the back of the knife to ignite firesteel so you preserve the cutting edge of your blade. I think a hard stone might work too, not tried it yet though. I use saw on victorinox huntsman or L/man charge to produce sawdust for tinder.
I found and purchased my firesteel at dicks sporting goods retail store; also saw it at rei; dicks price was $9.99 us dollars, rei was 12.99 for non members. I plan to also bring my self made fire piston into the wild when I go there.
@ryanjcus ct? go on vacation elswhere,i lived there most of my life and now i live in nc.way better living, except when i'm told to go home you damn yankee...too bad i say
um iv only checked cabellas and bass pro (bass pro was a few bucks cheeper) but it was in with the same stuff but i dont think the stores are all set up the same so itd be best to just ask a worker its alot quicker lol
Personally have had various cheap lighters fail on me. I don't favor them for survival kits. If you do carry one, I suggest that you rotate them out often. Have had gas leak out before or problems with the striker system on cheap lighters.
I am not apposed to using a quality lighter, but prefer other methods.
Take an altoids tin, put your matches, a flint, wetfire tab, use can cut out a small square of fine grit sand paper and superglue it to the bottom of the lid.
Ive got my own little fire starting kit. It includes a lighter, cotton, very fine wood scrapings, magnesium block, a shotgun shell ( cut it open, use the black powder as an excellent starter with the fire block).all of this is in a small portable waterproof container with necklace.
Ill be adding a saw blade for better sparking, one of those orange swedish fire starters, a magnifying glass, and thats about all i got so far.
if you happen to have one you could use a laser pointer, if you want one to make fire you can get one for 30 bucsks =) lasts as long as the battery will go
Fine job. I do so love my bic lighter. I keep one in a small pouch around my neck, next to my body. -0 weather can be hard on them. So in this way I keep warm and ready to go.(I found that out the hard way)
Magnesium blocks are a pain especial in the wind (as I type you mention that). You can pre shave the magnesium at home and carry it in a tin (some what of a fire hazard)
You are so right. I don't care for the Magnesium fire starter. But I did find that putting the shaving on a some tape, help's hold them in place. I than keep them in a old shoe polish can.
Great Video super informative. I was looking over the net trying to understand why matches had wax on them and how to use them, You explained why and how to make/use them. Great knowledge will refer and recommend this video. Also with the lighters I have always preferred bic lighters (the big ones the small ones always run out of gas 3x as fast and the flint is to small to reuse when your lighter goes out) Always choose bic lighters over anything else. Thanks for the video really helped alot!
Also you didn't mention starting a fire using the 9vt. battery and steel wool. Also steel wool is cheap and comes in large packages. It is one of the best "first tinders" that you can buy.
I have had a cache for years, and I decided I should probably replace the expired medical supplies. I had a disposible lighter in a hard case and it had gone everywhere. My guess is it froze and thawed repeatedly over the last 4 years it has been buried.
Also, you should invest in a blastmatch. It's basically a firesteel, but it only requires one hand and will shoot much much more sparks/ Also it's directional.
Well you can buy a great Firesteel off of ebay for £1.....they come from hong kong and are just as good as the Light my Fire ones. Delivery is about £2 so you can get firesteels far cheaper
Heres another idea, many people may not think of: a piece of steel wool and a battery. Especially a 9v. Just hold the steel wool to both poles and it will burn the oils off which can start a fire. The wire glows like a lightbulb filament.
Nothing harder than getting a fire started in the cold damp woods. The swedish steele method definitely is the most reliable in any condition because you always get a spark. Thanks for the info.
i would never advise trying to use a primitive means of starting a fire like 2 sticks, 9.9/10 times all you will get is some smoke and blackened wood, and if theres any moisture at all it probably wont work. /agree that flints are your best option for reliability and longevity
Why don't you make a vid on it?? The purpose of this vid is to show fire starting devices you can buy to give people an idea wht their options are. If you haven't made a vid about it why are you questioning mine?? Primitive techiniques is a whole series of videos anyways.
calm down (if you arn't already) ....i was just suggesting you should mention it, but im not saying this was a bad video...it was just a innocent question...=(
If it sounded like I'm angry...I apologize. Your comment appears to me that you are laughing at me because I didn't mention primitive techniques when the video is not intended to be about that. I often wonder why people feel the need to criiticize others vids when they have nothing on the subject themselves. If you say it was just an innocent question, I'll take your word for it.. I appreciate that you have subscribed too. Stay Safe
LOL "just because they last so frigin long" so true thats what i use all ways, but my favorite is the blast match you should try it out its so close to your target so the metal burns like coals on you tinder
Good video. Should incorporate char cloth in your discussions. As well potassium permanganate and glycerin can also start a fire. Then there is also the trusty 9V battery and steel wool method.
I have never owned one myself, but I think the flint rod is huge compared to a regular firesteel. The worst that happens with the blastmatch is the striking mechanism stops working, but then you can just strike it like a normal steel. Thanks Man
i liked it. wasn't anything new for me, except for the saw blades, liked that, i use a razor blade w/my firesteel, because it is more versatile, but i think that 1/2 a jigsaw blade is going to replace...may file the teeth down so they don't get caught on stuff as easy. might have been nice to include natural firestarters...besides dry grass or pine needles the only ones i can think of right now are birchbark and pitch, though. another non-natural one is steel wool or alcohol prep pads... good vid
I filed the otherside of the saw to experiment, and it works pretty good. It's not sharp enough to cut or anything. Yeah, you might want to take the teeth down a bit. It's pretty agressive if you don't. I've got some grooves going on with the firesteel. Oneday I'll do a natural tinder vid. I've talked about it breifly in a few videos. Birdsnests, and "old mans beard" are excellent. Thanks
THANK YOU. omg you dont know how many people dont bring water proof matches or light any where. all they have is stupid matches. get wet and ur F****d
No Problem Bro, I like your name too. I wish I had thought of something good like that. But now I have too much invested into this account to start all over. People underestimate the importance of being prepared. Thanks Again Dude
keep a piece of dry chaga it catch a spark from flint and steel or the fero rod then do the bird nest deal

i would never advise trying to use a primitive means of starting a fire like 2 sticks, 9.9/10 times all you will get is some smoke and blackened wood, and if theres any moisture at all it probably wont work. /agree that flints are your best option for reliability and longevity
w0112875 3 years ago
Dig-It! Hey the lint works like a charm.
Paul07901 3 years ago
you can use the back side of you knife blade, i have tried with my fire steel.
survivetheoutdoors 3 years ago
how come you didn't mention primitive fire starting with 2 sticks? lol
theres also alot of other fire starting techniques you didnt mention, but the ones you mentioned are probably the easiest...lol
dukcaboose 3 years ago
Why don't you make a vid on it?? The purpose of this vid is to show fire starting devices you can buy to give people an idea wht their options are. If you haven't made a vid about it why are you questioning mine?? Primitive techiniques is a whole series of videos anyways.

calm down (if you arn't already) ....i was just suggesting you should mention it, but im not saying this was a bad video...it was just a innocent question...=(
dukcaboose 3 years ago
If it sounded like I'm angry...I apologize. Your comment appears to me that you are laughing at me because I didn't mention primitive techniques when the video is not intended to be about that. I often wonder why people feel the need to criiticize others vids when they have nothing on the subject themselves. If you say it was just an innocent question, I'll take your word for it.. I appreciate that you have subscribed too. Stay Safe

sorry for the misunderstanding...i say "lol" alot to end a comment or whatever i am saying..
ill start staying safe in the summer, since thats when i do most of these things =)

overdrivear 3 years ago
You think everyone knows that? Do you think everyone knows you can purify water by boiling? Do you think everyone knows what you know?

You can find them in any hardware store or isle. You could even use the end of a hacksaw blade.

LOL "just because they last so frigin long" so true thats what i use all ways, but my favorite is the blast match you should try it out its so close to your target so the metal burns like coals on you tinder
chrissept21 3 years ago
Good video. Should incorporate char cloth in your discussions. As well potassium permanganate and glycerin can also start a fire. Then there is also the trusty 9V battery and steel wool method.
EDBPVIDEO 3 years ago
What do you think about a blast match fire starter? I don't have one myself but I just want to know your opinion about it Thank you Great video btw
lucky7biker 3 years ago
I have never owned one myself, but I think the flint rod is huge compared to a regular firesteel. The worst that happens with the blastmatch is the striking mechanism stops working, but then you can just strike it like a normal steel. Thanks Man

Good orientation video. You may also find that using the file on a multitool is an effective method for getting mag shavings.
If you use cotton balls with Vaseline the mag shavings will stick to the to the Vaseline.
This avoids the problem of having the shavings blow away.

i liked it. wasn't anything new for me, except for the saw blades, liked that, i use a razor blade w/my firesteel, because it is more versatile, but i think that 1/2 a jigsaw blade is going to replace...may file the teeth down so they don't get caught on stuff as easy. might have been nice to include natural firestarters...besides dry grass or pine needles the only ones i can think of right now are birchbark and pitch, though. another non-natural one is steel wool or alcohol prep pads... good vid
dmuirwatson 3 years ago
I filed the otherside of the saw to experiment, and it works pretty good. It's not sharp enough to cut or anything. Yeah, you might want to take the teeth down a bit. It's pretty agressive if you don't. I've got some grooves going on with the firesteel. Oneday I'll do a natural tinder vid. I've talked about it breifly in a few videos. Birdsnests, and "old mans beard" are excellent. Thanks
ryanjcus 3 years ago
used old man's beard...never used a birds nest

No Problem Bro, I like your name too. I wish I had thought of something good like that. But now I have too much invested into this account to start all over. People underestimate the importance of being prepared. Thanks Again Dude
