  • keep a piece of dry chaga it catch a spark from flint and steel or the fero rod then do the bird nest deal

  • the clear lighter runs out fast too. the bic is definately the best in my opinion. alot of hardcore survivalists would throw a fit about carrying a lighter but, a LARGE bic weighs mere grams, so why not carry one? it IS always good to have backup.

  • that gerber looks like it's seen some use. do you like it?

  • very well done video thank you...

  • i just bought a bigger fire starter for 5 bucks, not a cheaply made one either, i know the expensive ones work better though

  • Hello I understand petrolium jelly is good but I tried rubbing Isoypol alcohol and cottn balls and it burns for 4 min and it can be used for first aid, wich vaseiline(petrolium jelly) check my channel tomarrow after 5 pm and I will have a video of cotton balls with rubbing alcohol starting a wet stick and wet wood fire

  • @imSoAwsme Fire with Rubbing Alcohol check it out its my vid

  • cool expplination on all your tools and options. I will look forward to viewing your other educational vids... Thanks~

  • I once heard that the prisoners during world war 2 would split their matches up to 6 times!

  • the dull knife problem can be solved real easy carry a portable knife sharpener i carry SMITH'S pocket pal works great .I don't carry lighters 90% of my fires are started without matches or lighters. You can carry those individual packs of alcohol pads or hand cleaners or a bottle of the hand sanitizer which i get in the dollar store just to name a few and all you need is sparks no matches sometimes i carry pieces of rope soak in lamp oil long burn time when ignited.

  • WTF! 2:15 he blows out the match and abrah codabra!

  • @LonelyStreetProd @_@ you saw that too lol

  • here is an idea M.R.E.'s have the "metal container" verry flammible also the drink mixes (lemonade tea koolaid stuff and also non-dairy creamer) are flammable use these if you dont have the fuel bars also the food it's self has magnesium in it. there is a chance your shit will be flammable.

  • not to complain or anything but with the lighters there. not all those lighters run out the one on the far left uses butane and it is water tight so it does not leak out. also if u wanna get butane inserts for the zippos then u can do that on ebay for a reasonable price. other then that it was a great video

  • awesome!!

  • thanx

  • Love it man, great video and by the way you can dip the cotton balls in candle wax and it works better than petroleum jelly it lasts about 3 minutes!

  • just use a back of knife

  • matches.. what do you do when you run out?

I'd go with a swedish firesteel any day

  • why not just use the back of your blade?

  • You little piro.

  • keeps bugs away

  • Excellent video

  • use the back of your knife so it dose not dull it

  • great job!

  • gerber evo!

  • 10 - 20 dollars ebay under 3 dollars (mostly chines ones) but some of them look durable enough..

  • 10 - 20 $.... ebay just under 3 $ cheap Chinese ones but there are few that look durable.

  • you can use also a 9V battery plus steel wool, just touch the steel wool with the + and - battery poles , the wool start to burn and just lay on top of it paper , it work great

  • @gatsu8888888 yes this is what I do, fuck them matches

  • Excellent video. I agree it is best to carry a few fire starting tools. I wanted to point out that inside the zippo lighters there is a bunch of cotton so if it is out of fuel and the flint is still good, you may still be able to get a fire going. Just an observation from personal experience.

  • fyi trioxan burns for about 10-15 mins if it calm wind and its easy to light so no prob fer ppl that suck at using fire starters

  • god damnit im tired of these light my fires! they suck balls

  • @paintballhead03 Are you speaking of firesteels in general?

  • the saw blad makes mor smaller sparks and those sparks are hotter than if you were doing it with the knife. the knife sparks are more like small shavings but they burn a little longer

  • where can you get strike anywhere matches?

  • To get a good refillable lighter get a peanut lighter a countycomm for 12 bucks they basically last forever watertight and break proof and light fist try their also super small

  • is that a gerber evo?

  • This is a great video! I'd only say, use the back of your knife to shave or ignite magnesium or Fire Steel respectively. Of course if you're using a folder, hold the blade (duh!) With any fire starters, both practice and preparation are keys.

  • nah, i got my fire steel for $5 at big5. but yea ive seen $20 ones

  • Great job....thanks

  • Great video, I have a few tips for you. Strike anywhere matches have a safety hazard to them. They can ignite simply by rubbing together inside your pack. Also nail polish waterproofs matches and you don't need to remove it before striking. It'll also keep your strike anywhere's from self lighting. Wax, I've found is messy and has a real habit of flaking off the matches when temps very by large amounts.

  • get plastic rap and put it on the matches to water proof them

  • I am a Red woman I was born knowing how to make um fire.

  • I just bought a flint striker off ebay with shipping and everything $3.50 total.

  • Thank you for your informative presentation on fire starting tools. Although one day I'd like to learn a technique for fire starting with just found materials from outdoors, the firesteel is so much easier and reliable. Imagine if poor Chuck Noland (Castaway) had one of those... probably would have lasted him the whole time he was there on the island.

Btw, I've found lint balls made with vaseline to work better than cotton. Good slow burning fuel.

  • just my two cents...if you had to use your knife to scrape either magnesium or firesteels, use the tip of your knife. in my experience the carving area near the base of the blade is much more valuable for survival tool making than the tip. the tip does have its uses but i'm more willing to sacrifice the edge on my tip as opposed to the edge i use for carving. fwiw...

  • $20 for the large... £1.99 on ebay!

  • thank you man were do you get flint fire starter

  • hey what's diffrence between swedish fire n steal and flint and steal

  • @FightWithDevil there both the same

  • Thanks for the options

Imma use magnez n fire steel in the pack, lighter on my person, magnafy lens on the compass, matches w the cigs, tender w the food! Thank u

It'd been nice to see the magnesium go boom but nice point about the wind

  • You only use the back of the knife for the firesteel

  • I saw Ray Mears Using the back of the knife to ignite firesteel so you preserve the cutting edge of your blade. I think a hard stone might work too, not tried it yet though. I use saw on victorinox huntsman or L/man charge to produce sawdust for tinder.

  • what are fire steels made of?i have the army version but still have no clue, they are different from plain flint right?

  • what6 about a blast match thoose are good waterproof and like a magnesium stick but i think its better

  • i personally bring along a flamethrower weapon to light my fires...usually works...

  • Yep, Great video matey!

  • i love survival

  • where did you get the tri-hexamine bars?

  • lol at 8:06 the 2 "bags" on the left looked like condoms=]

  • why do you worry that your knife blade will dull? just use the not sharp side of it.

  • Red man makes small fire, cook his food, stays? warm. White man makes big fire, burns his food, stays warm by running to get more wood for fire!

  • @dysfunctionalyouth what if your 50/50 like me? Half my family is cherokee other half is white. like me=)

  • white man needs to learn from red man >:)

  • Dam

    your videos are sick

    I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE SURVIVAL SO MUCH!

  • You should check out the web @ northamericansurvivalschool. These guys are awsome. I took a 7 day Colorado course and man i loved it.

  • ive beeen looking for one to buy

  • where id u get ure swedish flint starters- any specific stores???

  • i hate it when the wind blows my shavings

  • nice vid :)

  • Comment removed

  • Cabelas does for sure cause that is where I bought mine. I highly doubt you have one near you though. There are only about 20 stores in the Nation.

  • Thanks!

  • I found and purchased my firesteel at dicks sporting goods retail store; also saw it at rei; dicks price was $9.99 us dollars, rei was 12.99 for non members. I plan to also bring my self made fire piston into the wild when I go there.

  • Thanks man. Actually I'm going on vacation near where a Cabellas is. :)

  • In Connecticut? I live minutes away. We could meet up.

  • Sounds Cool!

  • @ryanjcus ct? go on vacation elswhere,i lived there most of my life and now i live in nc.way better living, except when i'm told to go home you damn yankee...too bad i say

  • bass pro also does it will be in the back packing section, usualy next to the stoves and packing food

  • In all stores or just some stores?

  • um iv only checked cabellas and bass pro (bass pro was a few bucks cheeper) but it was in with the same stuff but i dont think the stores are all set up the same so itd be best to just ask a worker its alot quicker lol

  • @Nighthawk961 i got mine on ebay new for $2.98 free shipping and it was buy it now it works great i recomend buying it there it is very cheap

  • @TheFisherman000 Thank you very much!

  • i got the magnizium and flint at dicks

  • @Nighthawk961 big5 sports has em

  • Great variety and info. Good job!

  • use the back of the knife

  • fire piston....anyone?

  • Wow, great video!

  • I think this is the best vid ever on fire tools. keep it up ryan!

  • Personally have had various cheap lighters fail on me. I don't favor them for survival kits. If you do carry one, I suggest that you rotate them out often. Have had gas leak out before or problems with the striker system on cheap lighters.

I am not apposed to using a quality lighter, but prefer other methods.

  • use the back of your knife and not the blade

  • This is One of the best videos I've ever seen of firetools and tinder reviews! :D

  • Take an altoids tin, put your matches, a flint, wetfire tab, use can cut out a small square of fine grit sand paper and superglue it to the bottom of the lid.

  • dont forget to seal the tin so it becomes waterproof :P

  • Or you can just have rubber bicycle tube in the kit. It burns even when wet.

  • fire is one of the 4 top survival necessities.

Ive got my own little fire starting kit. It includes a lighter, cotton, very fine wood scrapings, magnesium block, a shotgun shell ( cut it open, use the black powder as an excellent starter with the fire block).all of this is in a small portable waterproof container with necklace.

Ill be adding a saw blade for better sparking, one of those orange swedish fire starters, a magnifying glass, and thats about all i got so far.

  • check out the fire steel blanks. Many sizes and price ranges to suit just about everybody. Much cheaper than prepackaged fire steel kits.

  • if you happen to have one you could use a laser pointer, if you want one to make fire you can get one for 30 bucsks =) lasts as long as the battery will go

  • You can also use a 9-v battery and steel wool

  • how long does a firesteel last?

  • what i like to use for tinder is cotten balls soked in germ X it stays lite for a very long time and is smokeless

  • can you please put up a video demoing strike anywhere matches...and put up some ideas of where the best places to strike it are

  • Fine job. I do so love my bic lighter. I keep one in a small pouch around my neck, next to my body. -0 weather can be hard on them. So in this way I keep warm and ready to go.(I found that out the hard way)

  • Magnesium blocks are a pain especial in the wind (as I type you mention that). You can pre shave the magnesium at home and carry it in a tin (some what of a fire hazard)

  • You are so right. I don't care for the Magnesium fire starter. But I did find that putting the shaving on a some tape, help's hold them in place. I than keep them in a old shoe polish can.

  • Great Video super informative. I was looking over the net trying to understand why matches had wax on them and how to use them, You explained why and how to make/use them. Great knowledge will refer and recommend this video. Also with the lighters I have always preferred bic lighters (the big ones the small ones always run out of gas 3x as fast and the flint is to small to reuse when your lighter goes out) Always choose bic lighters over anything else. Thanks for the video really helped alot!

  • 4:26 use the backside of your knife

  • he is not using a knife its a small hacksaw blade made for the job

  • I know that. I mean he's not keen using his knife for it because it becomes dull.

So I replied that he could use the backside of the knife, but maybe he has come up with that solution allready ;-)

  • pause at 2:15 than play

  • where do you buy the fire steel?

  • online walmart

  • Great video, thanks for making it. =)

  • Ya good man Silveradofanatic,I was also about to use the spine(back)of your knife. :)

  • use the back of your knife

  • i got the small version of the fire steel(also known as the scout version) £4.99 of ebay free deliverie

  • how old do u have to be to buy a swedish firesteel?

  • No limit, but YOU specifically shouldn't be buying one.

  • If your too young just buy it from oyur mum/dad's credit card

  • Just a tip mate if you're worried about it dulling your knife blade.. Use the back side of the knife.

  • Also you didn't mention starting a fire using the 9vt. battery and steel wool. Also steel wool is cheap and comes in large packages. It is one of the best "first tinders" that you can buy.

  • I have had a cache for years, and I decided I should probably replace the expired medical supplies. I had a disposible lighter in a hard case and it had gone everywhere. My guess is it froze and thawed repeatedly over the last 4 years it has been buried.

Also, you should invest in a blastmatch. It's basically a firesteel, but it only requires one hand and will shoot much much more sparks/ Also it's directional.

  • you can get a spray deotorant such as axe, tag, ect.. and spray it on tinder and it works really well to start a fire

  • or if you run out of deos, you can scrape off your dry skin for tinder.

  • lol

  • that little saw for your fire starter looks like a jig saw blade, is tht what it is???

  • Well you can buy a great Firesteel off of ebay for £1.....they come from hong kong and are just as good as the Light my Fire ones. Delivery is about £2 so you can get firesteels far cheaper

  • nice vid

  • well if its dry you can try to make a fire for a few hours with two sticks =P

  • lol a shower of sparks =-) well great vid where u get all this stuff

  • Heres another idea, many people may not think of: a piece of steel wool and a battery. Especially a 9v. Just hold the steel wool to both poles and it will burn the oils off which can start a fire. The wire glows like a lightbulb filament.

  • but its like the lighters

if a battery sits on a shelf it will run out of power eventually

  • if it is all someone can find, it is certainly worth a try that they might not have thought of

  • LOL huh......

  • Ryan 5/5 again. I think next weekend, I'll have my kit vid up. Rock on bro!

  • Nothing harder than getting a fire started in the cold damp woods. The swedish steele method definitely is the most reliable in any condition because you always get a spark. Thanks for the info.

  • thanks for the info i need to get a fire steel

  • You go

  • i would never advise trying to use a primitive means of starting a fire like 2 sticks, 9.9/10 times all you will get is some smoke and blackened wood, and if theres any moisture at all it probably wont work. /agree that flints are your best option for reliability and longevity

  • Dig-It! Hey the lint works like a charm.

  • you can use the back side of you knife blade, i have tried with my fire steel.

  • how come you didn't mention primitive fire starting with 2 sticks? lol

theres also alot of other fire starting techniques you didnt mention, but the ones you mentioned are probably the easiest...lol

  • Why don't you make a vid on it?? The purpose of this vid is to show fire starting devices you can buy to give people an idea wht their options are. If you haven't made a vid about it why are you questioning mine?? Primitive techiniques is a whole series of videos anyways.

  • calm down (if you arn't already) ....i was just suggesting you should mention it, but im not saying this was a bad video...it was just a innocent question...=(

  • If it sounded like I'm angry...I apologize. Your comment appears to me that you are laughing at me because I didn't mention primitive techniques when the video is not intended to be about that. I often wonder why people feel the need to criiticize others vids when they have nothing on the subject themselves. If you say it was just an innocent question, I'll take your word for it.. I appreciate that you have subscribed too. Stay Safe

  • sorry for the misunderstanding...i say "lol" alot to end a comment or whatever i am saying..

ill start staying safe in the summer, since thats when i do most of these things =)

  • LMAO!!he says you can use fire to boil water as though we dont know that!!BTW,nice video, ive got the orange whistle which you see towards the right

  • You think everyone knows that? Do you think everyone knows you can purify water by boiling? Do you think everyone knows what you know?

  • LOL you really defend your videos alot haha i like you

your just a harmless guy trying to have fun teaching us some woodland skills

btw i was wondering if you carry wool like a blanket cuz i just got one and i love it

  • Great job dude!!!

  • where do u get the saws plz respond

  • You can find them in any hardware store or isle. You could even use the end of a hacksaw blade.

  • i saw that yer American...but isnt that Canadian Cadpat camo there in the backround?

btw thanks for the video i like this stuff alot..im a cadet!

  • excellent. thanks.

  • Thanks Buddy, Much Appreciated

  • LOL "just because they last so frigin long" so true thats what i use all ways, but my favorite is the blast match you should try it out its so close to your target so the metal burns like coals on you tinder

  • Good video. Should incorporate char cloth in your discussions. As well potassium permanganate and glycerin can also start a fire. Then there is also the trusty 9V battery and steel wool method.

  • What do you think about a blast match fire starter? I don't have one myself but I just want to know your opinion about it Thank you Great video btw

  • I have never owned one myself, but I think the flint rod is huge compared to a regular firesteel. The worst that happens with the blastmatch is the striking mechanism stops working, but then you can just strike it like a normal steel. Thanks Man

  • Good orientation video. You may also find that using the file on a multitool is an effective method for getting mag shavings.

If you use cotton balls with Vaseline the mag shavings will stick to the to the Vaseline.

This avoids the problem of having the shavings blow away.

  • NICE thats good having many ways to start a fire GREAT VIDS

  • WOW NICE LOVE IT

  • i liked it. wasn't anything new for me, except for the saw blades, liked that, i use a razor blade w/my firesteel, because it is more versatile, but i think that 1/2 a jigsaw blade is going to replace...may file the teeth down so they don't get caught on stuff as easy. might have been nice to include natural firestarters...besides dry grass or pine needles the only ones i can think of right now are birchbark and pitch, though. another non-natural one is steel wool or alcohol prep pads... good vid

  • I filed the otherside of the saw to experiment, and it works pretty good. It's not sharp enough to cut or anything. Yeah, you might want to take the teeth down a bit. It's pretty agressive if you don't. I've got some grooves going on with the firesteel. Oneday I'll do a natural tinder vid. I've talked about it breifly in a few videos. Birdsnests, and "old mans beard" are excellent. Thanks

  • used old man's beard...never used a birds nest

  • THANK YOU. omg you dont know how many people dont bring water proof matches or light any where. all they have is stupid matches. get wet and ur F****d

  • No Problem Bro, I like your name too. I wish I had thought of something good like that. But now I have too much invested into this account to start all over. People underestimate the importance of being prepared. Thanks Again Dude

  • its the name of an sog knife isnt it?

  • I'm not sure. :)

  • yeah, nice
