I add: they r fucking high end & underrated...and New Wave. I LOVE the CARS!!!!
Elliot Easton's not underrated. Ask anyone who plays guitar (and those are the only opinions that matter on this subject) and you'll hear the same thing: the guy's a genius. In a band full of pro's, he's one step beyond -a straight-up virtuoso.
@tacomonster98 Well... pardon me for thinking you were talking about their MUSIC! People are still wearing 80s fashions, this stuff never really goes away.
Yes they were!! Not after Candy-O, but in the 70's they were prime Classic rock!! Obviously they took a major new wave direction, and that guys comment made no sense, but still, they were rock-oriented!!
Fellow fans, I found a report on The Cars Facebook that states that there is some talk about nominating them for Rock and Roll hall of Fame induction. I'm sure we all agree it is long overdue. I tried to create a link to the page but I think it's not allowed on Youtube. So go to cars Facebook page. You will find the thread about halfway down the page. You'll find the link to the petition there. Let's make this happen!
If you have not seen the movie from the 80s "The Last American Virgin", with a great soundtrack with this song included, well by golly you have got to see it, and shit its f..... hilarious!
@myrese99 - I remember this song playing during "The Last American Virgin", too. That movie must have played just about every single song that was hot circa 1981/1982...
I think you got it wrong, The Cars played some kick butt rock and roll in the 70's!! In the 80's they were all about new wave..... I still dont understand why people think there power pop, i mean really? Listen to youre all ive got tonight and cruiser!!
How to tell you are old- No one on Youtube knows the "cute girl" introducing The Cars is very famous actress Valerie Harper. 2) you realize of the 3 times you've seen The Cars live, 1981 was the first year. 29 yrs? Wow.

@YAHWEHSWARRIOR1 You made my day! : ) I am writing a novel about the early 80s and Rock 'n roll. I was playing in a band and those were some of the happiest days of my life.
Fridays was a great comedy show and had great musical guests and I remember seeing this episode in 1982 on ABC in between watching the L.A. Lakers play Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons on CBS Friday Night and 15 years old times kinda simpler then.
@JonahKlineComics at least you got to taste that lifestyle man. dont worry soon you will be out on your own and you will have both sides of the spectrum to draw from. ultimately that will make you a better person. just grind out these next couple years at home and then go out there and fuck a lot of women
i didnt say that would make him a better man, i said that by living and experiencing both the carefree liberated lifestyle juxtaposed with the restricted, somewhat oppressive lifestyle, it would give him some more perspective on life than say your average teenager and that by taking elements from both of these experiences he may be a more compassionate and understanding individual. hementioned being able to date and how he missed that hence the bit about fucking a lot of women.
This song's fun. Back then a friend of mine would go with me to rock clubs if I'd go to discos with her (I hated dancing and discos). I'd go, but not dance. Finally, one night, this song came on (and I always loved it and the Cars), so I grabbed this guy to dance on the dance floor and since kind of got into dancing more after that for a bit. funny how this song broke that barrier. It was quite an accomplishment for me..lol
Tragic that this superb, verstile band seems to have been forgotten even by those who proclaim to 'know their music' Ask any of them & I guarantee none of them would put The Cars in their all time top six...
I love them both, Ben was a great singer and musician, but I found their voices to be quite distinctive from each other. Ric's voice or his style for instance @ :38 or 1:12 is so classic Ric I personally am able to identify that voice anywhere.
The live (and brilliant!) version of "Cruiser'" on the Shake it Up tour is Ben singing and there are a lot of ppl who had thouht it was Ric, myself included, all these years! I am far more moved by Ben's voice but in that song, he had a lot of ppl 2nd guessing. That particular performance is mind-blowing.. this one here is just eh. Sorry Ric :(
Not me. I could always tell the difference. It was the vocals on "Just what I needed", "Candy-O", and "Bye, Bye, Love" that had me coming back for more cars. Love Ric, he's a musical genius, but Ben's voice was IT for me!
In interviews they always sounded surprised that people could get their vocals confused, but I think they played into that a bit too. 'It's not the night' is a prime example of when Ric and Ben sang alternating bits in a song and start sounding more and more alike! That said, on closer inspection Ben's voice always had a richer timbre/more emotive impact, while Ric has that 'hiccuppy' style that's so typical of him.
I never had a problem telling the difference. I think that they were both bad ass singers, each with their own style, and it worked well. However, I like Ben better, he was just a better singer.
Ben made this comment in the March 87 'Musician' mag: "Im a big fan of Fender Precision basses. Its got the brightness I need and the active electronics. Ive used the Steinberger, but its a bit brassy for me."
Wow, that was a crazy looking bass that Ben was using, along with the pink and light blue colors. Totally 80's. The Cars rock. RIP - Ben Orr, you are missed.
