  • Flat out good. 80s smuck... I don't think so.

  • "and really sort of adorable..." huh? What a lame intro. Valerie Harper screwed that one up.

  • Why can't another group replicate what The Cars and Supertramp accomplished? It's all rap, hip-hop and crap. The Cars are supreme. I guess It's better this way: keep our memories of this terrific group.

  • @grgeliz Supertramp?

  • @grgeliz

buy replicate you don't mean "improve" their songs do you i hope not

but i am for more rock less rap and hip-hop and WAYYY less annoying pop songs

    :P

  • The CARS are Classic Rock.. Great Dance songs. A great band

  • SIEMPRE ENCANTADOR BENJAMIN, EL UNICO

  • elliot easton, takin' it home! love the bonus guitar at the end.

  • 他還真瘦啊。

  • instantly identifiable voice Ric is so unique

  • Love this song

  • I love you !!!! the cars rock

  • I think that's the most I've ever seen Ric move in concert, he's ALMOST dancing!

  • Elliot's greatest solo!

  • @dobegirl01 You may be suffering from "Irony Deficiency".

  • Ric's aqua suite made an appearance in the movie "Dumb and Dumber" during the high class party scene. Remember?

  • I love it when they wear pastel colors and play pink guitars!

  • Wonderful Ben !!! I love you.

  • Elliot Easton's not underrated. Ask anyone who plays guitar (and those are the only opinions that matter on this subject) and you'll hear the same thing: the guy's a genius. In a band full of pro's, he's one step beyond -a straight-up virtuoso.

  • I Love 80's.

  • pink guitars....steinberger bass...pastel colors....wow ...can anyone else say 80`s !

  • Brilliant tune!

  • Elliot Easton- Severely underrated.

  • funny. and really sorta adorable. well i coulda put it better myself. how about fucking well underrated rock band

  • Are those pink Strats they're playing? That took some guts.

  • @125jlm yep. One must be secure in one's masculinity to play a pink guitar.

  • @tacomonster98 That makes no sense! I don't care what anyone says, The Cars are not/never were "Classic Rock". Their whole concept is too high end.

  • @paintdiva was talking about the clothes my genius

  • @tacomonster98 Well... pardon me for thinking you were talking about their MUSIC! People are still wearing 80s fashions, this stuff never really goes away.

  • @paintdiva I wear a mix of late 70's-early 80's fashions all the time, and I'm 21...oh yeah, and late 70's-early 80's is my FAVORITE era of music...

  • @chpman2013 I used to wear that stuff for real! Google "Tiger Lily, all girl band" ~

  • @paintdiva

Yes they were!! Not after Candy-O, but in the 70's they were prime Classic rock!! Obviously they took a major new wave direction, and that guys comment made no sense, but still, they were rock-oriented!!

  • BEN was the Flexible Tenor.

  • they'vegot the coolest sound around---love their songs

  • i was at this performance!!! yes, i'll never be the same~

  • one of the great american bands

ben orr looks like he's auditioning for star trek here

  • lovin the pink jaguar

  • i want ric's guitar

  • Fellow fans, I found a report on The Cars Facebook that states that there is some talk about nominating them for Rock and Roll hall of Fame induction. I'm sure we all agree it is long overdue. I tried to create a link to the page but I think it's not allowed on Youtube. So go to cars Facebook page. You will find the thread about halfway down the page. You'll find the link to the petition there. Let's make this happen!

  • If you have not seen the movie from the 80s "The Last American Virgin", with a great soundtrack with this song included, well by golly you have got to see it, and shit its f..... hilarious!

  • @myrese99 - I remember this song playing during "The Last American Virgin", too. That movie must have played just about every single song that was hot circa 1981/1982...

  • These guys played some kick-butt rock and roll back in the day 1980's. Always sounded good to me. Jim

  • @jstetzer01

I think you got it wrong, The Cars played some kick butt rock and roll in the 70's!! In the 80's they were all about new wave..... I still dont understand why people think there power pop, i mean really? Listen to youre all ive got tonight and cruiser!!

  • Easton playing a reverse body pink strat....classic!

  • How to tell you are old- No one on Youtube knows the "cute girl" introducing The Cars is very famous actress Valerie Harper. 2) you realize of the 3 times you've seen The Cars live, 1981 was the first year. 29 yrs? Wow.

  • @chifour66 Valerie Harper was 42 year old here! Hardly "a girl".

  • @paintdiva that makes the point, when 42 looks "cute"

  • @paintdiva Someone else called her a cute girl. That's why it's in quotation marks. I know how old she was then, and now.

  • @chifour66 Valerie & The Cars are awesome!!! Try to find a few from nowadays who can compare!!!

  • the gal doing the intro needs to have her head examined... SORTA ADORABLE??? OMG Benjamin is not sorta anything but total perfection!

  • @Gina97xls I'm also still trying to figure out the "funny" comment....funny haha or funny peculiar???....like I said WTF??? Wonder what THEY thought of the intro. And yes, Ben is total perfection!!! BOOOOO!!! to the announcer.

  • I don't like the announcer's intro.."I think they're funny and really sort of adorable"....WTF???? I love you Ben.

  • @stargazer477 thanks for sharing this with me Cheryl! MWAH xoxoxo :)

  • @stargazer477 O my god, Her intro cracks me up and I don't know why...I mean..WTF is that? I think they're funny and really sort of adorible?????

  • @StevenTylerIsMyLife Yeah, I'm still trying to get over it.....LOL!

  • when was this song made?

  • one of my favorite leads of all time

  • sort of adorable ? She has gotta be kidding ! Benjamin is perfect !

  • @whitewitch8 Yes he is :)

  • possibly the greatest pop band of there time.

  • I love the Cars! I've enjoyed them for many years. They're unique.

  • Cars, thanks for not lip-syncing like most bands do on TV shows. So refreshing!

  • thank you paintdiva for shareing and blessing us with your awesome videos!you are nothing but a hand full of aces!i cant thank you enough as i have watched just about every one of your cars videos many many times and i just cant stop!thank you for taking me back in time!

  • @YAHWEHSWARRIOR1 You made my day! : ) I am writing a novel about the early 80s and Rock 'n roll. I was playing in a band and those were some of the happiest days of my life.

  • THE FRIGGIN'80's BEATLES !!!!!

  • "Don't let nobody pick your bum"?

  • @dunskie "don't let nobody pick your fun" : |

  • 'Really, sort of, adorable',LOL!

  • Fridays was a great comedy show and had great musical guests and I remember seeing this episode in 1982 on ABC in between watching the L.A. Lakers play Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons on CBS Friday Night and 15 years old times kinda simpler then.

  • THIS IS FUCKING PHENOMENAL

  • @JonahKlineComics at least you got to taste that lifestyle man. dont worry soon you will be out on your own and you will have both sides of the spectrum to draw from. ultimately that will make you a better person. just grind out these next couple years at home and then go out there and fuck a lot of women

  • Fucking a lot of women will not make you a better man. That's just overcompensating for your questionable masculinity.

  • @paintdiva

i didnt say that would make him a better man, i said that by living and experiencing both the carefree liberated lifestyle juxtaposed with the restricted, somewhat oppressive lifestyle, it would give him some more perspective on life than say your average teenager and that by taking elements from both of these experiences he may be a more compassionate and understanding individual. hementioned being able to date and how he missed that hence the bit about fucking a lot of women.

  • Im all for freedom but being a "consumer" of women, like they are products you use, (then throw away) de-humanizes women and makes you less of a man.

  • @paintdiva you are right u are a good person

  • "...and really sort of adorable". Huh? Sort of? Completely adorable!

  • I kinda like Greg Hawkes is using two Prophet-5's in his rig. I guess one Prophet-5 didn't have enough memory to store all the sounds he used.

  • in '97, I was 3 . My parents made me grow up with this music. I was rocking out to GNR in 3rd grade. I'm so glad my dad played this :D

  • And unfortunately, Ben Orr passed away several years ago. He went way too young. Great voice, though, indeed.

  • OMG NICE PINK GUITARS!!!!!!

  • Has anyone seen the SNL performance of Magic?

  • Yes it's awesome

  • 'sort of' adorable? Ben is the man! I His voice always did it for me. I could always tell the difference in their voices.

  • This song's fun. Back then a friend of mine would go with me to rock clubs if I'd go to discos with her (I hated dancing and discos). I'd go, but not dance. Finally, one night, this song came on (and I always loved it and the Cars), so I grabbed this guy to dance on the dance floor and since kind of got into dancing more after that for a bit. funny how this song broke that barrier. It was quite an accomplishment for me..lol

  • WHERE CAN I GET A JACKET LIKE RIC'S???

  • Try a thrift store in a large city.

  • It should be "Shake-it-fukin'-up!" Great song! THANKS!

  • shake, shake, shake it up!! Uh Huh!!! love it!! I was 8 when I was boppin to this! still love it!

  • Elliot Eastons a great guitar player

  • Did this happen in 1981?

  • sz3rd

sorry but both pink but not the same one is a Strat but Ricks is a pink Jazzmaster sorry dude.......................

  • matching pink strats and a steinberger, man I remember listening to these guys on the juke box at pizza hut when I was a kid.

  • aww look at ben's cute smile 2:10

    :) tee hee

  • i found it lol

    ahh its soo cute^^ haha

  • I watched it like 5 times in a row... what a teddy bear...

  • Comment removed

  • Survey says: it's a Jaguar. All Jazzmasters have paired single-coils, whereas only some Jaguars do. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to tell them apart.

Guitar geekery aside, it's just STUPID how awesome The Cars were!!

  • Tragic that this superb, verstile band seems to have been forgotten even by those who proclaim to 'know their music' Ask any of them & I guarantee none of them would put The Cars in their all time top six...

  • That's SO veryy wrong hunny

    They're my top 1

:) No lie, I love them!!

  • i think Ben looks absolutely adorable<3

    R.IP, love

  • HE IS SWEET!!!

  • This is a awsome song who does not like this song

  • I love everything about the Cars. no shortage of talent here. And they're very easy on the eyes.

  • RIC IS HOT!!!!

  • if he can marry a beautiful model, there is hope for me.

  • Can you sing?

  • Rhoda introduces them. Awesome!

  • nice jaguar(or maybe jazzmaster), the pink is awesome

  • This song is amazing! The Cars rock!!

  • This is my cell phone ringer!

  • This is the jam...

I think this has to be my favorite out of all their hits! =]

  • lol,this music make me happy :)

  • shake it up

  • classic party song.oh yeah

  • love the pink guitar and the baby blue suit combo!

    :D

  • the cars rock just like all other bands in the 50s-90s!!!!!

  • Ric's jacket has big shoulder pads that were popular in the 80's. It's the cut of the suit, not a small head. He's very tall at 6' 4".

  • Guitar solo sounds a bit like the one in "Travelin' Band" by Creedence Clearwater Revival at 1.33 seconds into their song.

  • The Cars rock

  • Always loved this band, found it hard to distinguish between ric and bens voices, anyone else too?

  • Same here, when I first got into them I always knew Rick sang but till I watched them live I realized Ben did too.

  • I love them both, Ben was a great singer and musician, but I found their voices to be quite distinctive from each other. Ric's voice or his style for instance @ :38 or 1:12 is so classic Ric I personally am able to identify that voice anywhere.

Good post. Love The Cars also.

  • The live (and brilliant!) version of "Cruiser'" on the Shake it Up tour is Ben singing and there are a lot of ppl who had thouht it was Ric, myself included, all these years! I am far more moved by Ben's voice but in that song, he had a lot of ppl 2nd guessing. That particular performance is mind-blowing.. this one here is just eh. Sorry Ric :(

  • Not me. I could always tell the difference. It was the vocals on "Just what I needed", "Candy-O", and "Bye, Bye, Love" that had me coming back for more cars. Love Ric, he's a musical genius, but Ben's voice was IT for me!

  • In interviews they always sounded surprised that people could get their vocals confused, but I think they played into that a bit too. 'It's not the night' is a prime example of when Ric and Ben sang alternating bits in a song and start sounding more and more alike! That said, on closer inspection Ben's voice always had a richer timbre/more emotive impact, while Ric has that 'hiccuppy' style that's so typical of him.

  • I never had a problem telling the difference. I think that they were both bad ass singers, each with their own style, and it worked well. However, I like Ben better, he was just a better singer.

  • ADIK

  • The bass is a Steinberger- used by lots of big names in the 80's. Made out of secret composite materials!

  • Much lighter than a Fender P-Bass!

  • Ben made this comment in the March 87 'Musician' mag: "Im a big fan of Fender Precision basses. Its got the brightness I need and the active electronics. Ive used the Steinberger, but its a bit brassy for me."

So looks like weight wasn't an issue for him!

  • Wow, that was a crazy looking bass that Ben was using, along with the pink and light blue colors. Totally 80's. The Cars rock. RIP - Ben Orr, you are missed.

  • Pink guitars....something you just don't see since the 80's ended. What a great time in music. I miss it.

  • Saw this when it aired in 81. Remember it like it was just yesterday. I loved this band from their first album and was excited to see them on this show.

  • I'm so glad I taped this and was able to restore it from VHS to HD. Still one of my favorite bands!

  • What a song and the synths sound totally garage band style. Really awesome

  • haha,oh mang.. this song rocks :)!

  • Radical 4/5
