@blankets1453 from what i've read, it does zoom in now. also, you could rotate the kindle and the pdf will adjust itself to fit the long side of the DX. I just ordered one yesterday. it should be shipped monday! i'm so excited!

For $380 I am amazed it is limited to B&W. I was looking at the kindle for reading and reporting. However, B&W is what 19th century newspapers (and todays) are printed in. This makes the kindle terrible for comics and graphic novels, not to mention e-mags.

At this point I would rather pay the $500 for the HP slate (just say no to apple) so I can have a color e-reader. Not to mention windows 7 touch and support for actual apps, rather then apples limited apps.

PRIMARILY I want an IPAD/Kindle for reading ebooks/pdf/doc/docx files, but I would certainly not mind it to do other things. Since I am a big fan of all in one electronics the IPAD is appealing to me in the sense that I have played some really amazing game apps on the iphone and I always wondered what they looked like on the IPAD, but the cost... What do you suggest?

@hckia Well, if you're only going to use the prospective device for reading, and that's it, then the best choice is the Kindle.

But if you envisage yourself using the device for more than just a reading device, then clearly iPad is the way to go. Just be careful on how you spend money on the apps, only get the best ones, by Google(ing) reviews.

@CH1NO18 ipad is not an ebook reader, so it has no sense make a compare. IPAD has a battery which has to be recharged after one day, the kindle... after 2 weeks. Kindle is more restful for your eyes, like read on a paper, IPAD not...

If you look for a reader, to read ebooks, best choice is the kindle dx imho

@AndersRodrig Sure. Well, if you throw the Kindle DX around, I'm sure it will break. I handle my Kindle with care, and nothing has gone wrong with it yet. I also purchased Square Trade Insurance, which means they will replace my Kindle DX (one time) with no questions asked.

Since the shipping costs are exorbiant, I suggest to look at an iPad beacuse it can do a hell of a lot more, but if you only want a book-reading device, the DX is best.

thanks man, great review! I love how it also applies the dictionary function, internet download sites and MP3/Book Reading capabilities. The other e Readers I've seen seem a bit rudimentary in comparison to these three defining characteristics.

I have some pre-downloaded pdf books which I've been able to upload through a USB port to my Mothers e Reader and I notice you said that there wasn't a USB port on the Kindle. How then would I load my pdf's onto it?

@jrodriguezquiros Im sure if you Google around, you could find some custom tailored wallpapers, but I just photoshopped my picture to the DX's resolution. Also, Amazon won't bother you with updates, and with my experience, it doesn't change the wallpaper.

Great review! I own a Kindle and an ipad. While the ipad is awesome in what it can do, it totally sucks as an e-reader, unless you are indoors or in a dark place since sunlight completely washes out the ipad's screen. The kindle will always be an awesome e-reader!

It actually IS a micro USB port! Tried the cable from my Samsung S8000 Jet as well es from me WD 1TB external hard disk, both worked well.

And the iPad will not replace the Kindle, as the TV did not replace the Radio...

The Kindle uses an e-ink screen. It's like reading a book, it's easy on your eyes. It also uses very little electricity.

The iPad on the other hand is an over-hyped, over-priced and over-sized iPod touch. It uses an LCD screen which uses more electricity and strains your eyes.

If this is what the average iGoon is like, I can see why Steve Jobs can pawn his crap so successfully.
