Now why would the cyborg throw a hissy fit and start crying over what a small potato posted?
Keyboardists of the world unite! Declare war on the fraud that is Jordan Rudess!
I agree with many of the comments here. I think Rudess is a monster player and he really opened the floodgates with DT as far as what they could achieve musically. But there was something about Moore's sense of melody and phrasing that hit home with me on their early albums. I'm just a bit more partial to his style than Jordan's I guess. But they're all incredible musicians including Sherinian.
@Zakariah1971 Fraud? Loser... He has awesome keyboard talent and you have none, so you have no obligation to flame Rudess. Until you can become a better keyboard player than he is, don't talk trash about him. Have a good day, practice keyboard, and maybe someday, maybe you can be the replacement of Rudess
People love to argue with me that true fans of DT love all the albums as much as the first 3, but to me there will always be something just a little more special about the beginning albums with this band, and that's only because of Moore and his interpretation of deep thought.
Look what SUNY Fredonia produced... I am sure he tested right out of the entire music program at 18. Unrivaled American keyboardist. Can't believe how I never get sick of his keyboard parts! 24 seconds of celestial genius!!
@alreadytaken334 i agree. i dont think jordan will ever be able to top space dye vest. or wait for sleep even. the only thing hes done that i like as much as those 2 is the awesome solo from the dance of eternity, but then again its just ragtime. but friggin epic ragtime! XD
I don't exactly "dislike" them now. I keep listening to them and I like some of their stuff. I simply think that their first albums were more "inspired". And it was surely because of Kevin Moore, who wrote some masterpieces by using just a couple of notes (wait for sleep, space dye vest, and so on). Actually Jordan Rudess seems to be like "look at how fast I am" when he plays, he's so cold... And so are the new DT.
Yep Jordan is a better player technically but I definitely think Kevin's composing was what made the first three albums so good. Even with the crappy production they still have a certain 'magical' aspect to them that none of the other albums have for me (except maybe Scenes from a Memory).
It sucks that Jordans role largely seems to be playing feedback-filled lead solos now.
Like Petrucci announced, Kevin Moore is a Catholic and Petrucci also Catholic at mag interview. it's pity that Kevin left DT. but anyway he did good work as his own style in OSI or Chromakey. I hope to reunion someday.
don't shoot me.. i'm not a DT fan. i believe that DT are excellent musicians but i prefer (& love) kevin's works with chroma key, osi & of course his solo lps (this is a recording, ghost book). i think that DT fans do not consider that kevin is not only a great keyboardist. he's also a great composer, writter & vocalist. it was obvious that he would try different ways in his career.
after all... i think we all (DT or just..Kevin fans) owe a 'thank you' to this man.
kevin really writes good music and he does have a technical side too, take the time keyboard solo is not easy u know, even metropolis, his role was crucial to the song, although jordan is more technical than him but doesnt contribute lyrics or composed songs of his own..
There are times when I tell myself that DT's old stuff sounds more authentic, and creative. But alot of the stuff Jordan helped write is really good. I just wish he varied his playing and choice of instruments in his solos. Less guitar emulation and more piano or bells or something
I think Moore WAS good... since que left DT he is only doing boring music, only playing chords and nothing more interesting. No more solos, no more speed, no more nothing... I don't really understand him but well... he was looking for that.

I hate the people that uses the term "closed minded" when is disagreed with a comment, is like a fancy way to say "you are retarded".
I think in "Awake" he done a lot of interesting things in slow tempo, he changed a lot since "I&W", but now... he is doing only chords all the time. He changed, ok, but I think he is being very plain in all the songs from Chroma Key, that the thing I don't like. I don't perceive any passion on what he is doing... thats what I feel.
There's more to playing than technical ability. Jordan is technically better, there's no arguing that, but listening to the same lightning fast licks over and over on every song makes me fall asleep. Kevin Moore is a much more interesting player from a melodic/songwriting point of view.
that is possibly the coolest thing i have ever heard. tell kev to come back and play space-dye vest with Dream Theater(even though I know he'd say no) just to make some fanboy's life complete.
I would like to have a word here. Musically, DT WAS going downhill, even though it wasn't Derek's fault. However, finding Jordan gave them back their musical complexity, thus leading them back to making great music. I like A Cahnge Of Seasons adn i do not hate FII, but listen to Scenes From A Memory with Jordan in it... it is beatiful. TOT and Octavarium are good (speaking in DT standards). SDOIT is a fucking masterpiece. Systematic Chaos is good enough.
I agree with both of you too, Kevin Moore was way better composing for Dream Theater than the Techno Stuff of Jordan Rudess but I think Jordan plays faster but who cares... and for Sherinian I have no words I think that he demonstrated all he can do with A Change of Seasons... But Kevin keyboard stuff is way better. In fact, I still like some DT songs from Jordan or some from Derek, but I'm in love with Kevin Moore he was the best Keyboardist that DT had... But I prefer Michael Pinnella :)
What are some good michael pinnella solos? Cause whenever I hear some of his I just think, "Meh, a keyboard solo." Nothing really pops out for me. Michael Romeo outshines him in every way lol
Well it's just my point of view I really like Pinnella's Solos in fact I think like your "Meh, a keyboard solo" with Jordan Rudess Stuff, as a Keyboardist I prefer Pinnella's Solos over other keyboardists.
Well I guess I just don't find that Pinnella's solos pop out in Symphony X songs is because I am a guitar player and just look forward to all of Michael Romeo's solos... Pinnella is very good though (getting off subject... no more talk of symphony x)
Kevin Moore was inspiration, talent, with a few notes makes me fly and Jordan is a virtuoso but your solos always seem the same, notes up, notes down.... Only technique but not inspiration. The master of progressive keyboards, the master of paranoid ambiences was KEVIN MOORE and the best DT was with KEVIN MOORE but you listen DT since 2000 maybe???.. pff Me since 1991 ;)
I disagree. Jordan is great no doubt. He is fast as hell. But Kevin had the REAL emotional quality that Jordan lacks. Listen to anything from Images and Words and then compare to Jordan's flurries of notes and you will see what i mean.
For what is emotion, if that music doesnt have technick? For exemple. Jordans solos in The dance of Eternity, Fatal Tragedy are bot of them great without feeling, becouse in some song is feeling for shit. xD (Im sorry)
Kevin Moore Is a genius.. he didnt (and doesnt) need hundreds of notes per second to make people think "oh my good thats sick" he rather play something melodic, and SOMETHING THAT MAKES SENSE , phrases and melodies , is something you could remember,... for instance try to remember "take the time's" solo, is not that hard is it??.. now try to remember honor thy father keyboard solo... you see what I mean??
You are right. Moore was perfect for Dream Theater. Derek is in the middle, and Jordan's just too out there IMO. With Derek, at least the entire point of his genre (metal jazz fusion) is virtuosity, so it fits the session.
I absolutely agree with you. Maybe Kevin is not the most virtuoso, but I think that I prefer the sound of dt with him than with the other 2 keyboardists. Jordan Rudess is great, but it's better to listen to him on his solo projects than to listen to him on dt. And Derek fits just perfect on planet X, the best thing that could happen to him (planet x is one of my favorite bands).
not only that but also his other work... and he has one thing that i think the others had less(i'm not saying they lacked it, only that they didn't have as much as Kevin does), the emotion! Look at his lyrics, listen his solos, he is so soulful and touches you in the heart!
Yeah that's it!, Kevin Moore was perfect for DT. Emotion, ambiences, the real progressive metal, magic notes, magic sounds, this is all that have not DT now...
EXCUSE ME BRO..........i think...KEVIN MOORE is the Key-God of the World....and no one can dare to compare him with melo-less Jordan Rudess......He is gud...But only on speed....
The greatest songwriter that DT has ever had. Kevin is one of the most talented musicians in last years. A few notes, not Jordan's crazy solos, but something perfect, original sounds, feeling...
Yep. And make sure you give Derek credit, though; he did a good job following in Moore's footsteps, even if he's more of a fusion-type keyboardist and not so much a melodic/progressive writer. Rudess is just too out there IMO.
kevin!!you are my favorite musical person!!.. !!that is an Istanbul solo!![BY ivan persia] progresive drummer..froom mexicOOoooo.. froom mexico? YES!! MADE IN UK. you know!!italian design.:)
both jordan and kevin are different yet amazing in their own ways! But Jordan gave a whole new life to Dream Theater when Scenes From A Memory came out their torubles really ended! And Jodan had alot of input in that! But Kevin was amazing no doubt both are great!
Agreed! The band was going downhill at some point and it was Jordan Rudess who saved them from it. Without Jordan, there would have been no more Dream Theater - because Portnoy was close to leaving at that point.
Let me clarify for you...He said "the band was going downhill...and rudess saved them from it." I don't think, from a musical perspective, the band was going downhill, because they were making great albums up till the time Jordan arrived (including F.I.I). In my opinion, they aren't making very good albums now.
I miss that ERA of DT. With both I&W and Awake I couldn't put the CD's down for a year or two when I got them. After that though it was oh yeah ok they play very well still but the songs seem somehow unfinished. I still have all their discs but some I really don't listen to and never did much.
Kevin Moore WAS the band. All due respect to the rest of band as they all are great but Kevin gave them melody and feeling as well as great key solos. He is the only one that I check from time to time for new music of the whole band. I have read though that he vehemently opposes ever revisiting the DR Past. He is wasting his talent and some agent needs to get off his backside and convince Kevin to come back before it is too late.

I think Jordan Ruddess is a technical wizard! But Kevein Moore knew how to write much better Melodies. He used harmonic minor and modes with repetition that unified the music. Jordans music is atonal. The tonal center moves too far away from the tonic and I do not knwo what the fuck key he is in. What I am am saying for you non technical heads is that I like Kevin Better!!!!! and dats dat. POOP MAMMA
I always preferred KM over JR. Much more melodic than JR.

Still, Kevin was the best.

My Rank:
1. Kevin Moore
2. Derek Sherinian
3. Jordan
All are great. But Kevins the only.
moonfingers 3 years ago 3
I totally agree with you. All respect too the other guys, but Keven Moore is really something to himself. Wish he never left!
MogHus 3 years ago 4
I agree with both of you too, Kevin Moore was way better composing for Dream Theater than the Techno Stuff of Jordan Rudess but I think Jordan plays faster but who cares... and for Sherinian I have no words I think that he demonstrated all he can do with A Change of Seasons... But Kevin keyboard stuff is way better. In fact, I still like some DT songs from Jordan or some from Derek, but I'm in love with Kevin Moore he was the best Keyboardist that DT had... But I prefer Michael Pinnella :)
LordDracula106 3 years ago 3
What are some good michael pinnella solos? Cause whenever I hear some of his I just think, "Meh, a keyboard solo." Nothing really pops out for me. Michael Romeo outshines him in every way lol
kingofvwcosmos 3 years ago
Well it's just my point of view I really like Pinnella's Solos in fact I think like your "Meh, a keyboard solo" with Jordan Rudess Stuff, as a Keyboardist I prefer Pinnella's Solos over other keyboardists.
LordDracula106 3 years ago
Well I guess I just don't find that Pinnella's solos pop out in Symphony X songs is because I am a guitar player and just look forward to all of Michael Romeo's solos... Pinnella is very good though (getting off subject... no more talk of symphony x)

False. Pagan's mind keyboardist ownt all..
and dont forget janne warman

I don't think so. Jordan is really gread keyboard player. One of the best in the world. Best teacher in the world is learning him.
Tuloisboss 3 years ago
Jordan is good... I saw him live but trust me this guy is better in so many ways

In technique i don't think DT had anyone better than Jordan, but with Kevin is like it fit, at least that's why i think
artha5 3 years ago 2
Kevin Moore was inspiration, talent, with a few notes makes me fly and Jordan is a virtuoso but your solos always seem the same, notes up, notes down.... Only technique but not inspiration. The master of progressive keyboards, the master of paranoid ambiences was KEVIN MOORE and the best DT was with KEVIN MOORE but you listen DT since 2000 maybe???.. pff Me since 1991 ;)
sh4dows 3 years ago 2
I disagree. Jordan is great no doubt. He is fast as hell. But Kevin had the REAL emotional quality that Jordan lacks. Listen to anything from Images and Words and then compare to Jordan's flurries of notes and you will see what i mean.
HEADBANGING69 3 years ago
For what is emotion, if that music doesnt have technick? For exemple. Jordans solos in The dance of Eternity, Fatal Tragedy are bot of them great without feeling, becouse in some song is feeling for shit. xD (Im sorry)
Tuloisboss 3 years ago
Kevin Moore Is a genius.. he didnt (and doesnt) need hundreds of notes per second to make people think "oh my good thats sick" he rather play something melodic, and SOMETHING THAT MAKES SENSE , phrases and melodies , is something you could remember,... for instance try to remember "take the time's" solo, is not that hard is it??.. now try to remember honor thy father keyboard solo... you see what I mean??
dtej00 3 years ago 12
You are right. Moore was perfect for Dream Theater. Derek is in the middle, and Jordan's just too out there IMO. With Derek, at least the entire point of his genre (metal jazz fusion) is virtuosity, so it fits the session.
SonOfYoungwood 3 years ago
yeh ok i see what you mean but havent you heard the solo he does in octavarium?? you cant say thats not melodic...
Axeman89 3 years ago
I love Jordan Rudess too, but Kevin More;)
MogHus 3 years ago 3
I absolutely agree with you. Maybe Kevin is not the most virtuoso, but I think that I prefer the sound of dt with him than with the other 2 keyboardists. Jordan Rudess is great, but it's better to listen to him on his solo projects than to listen to him on dt. And Derek fits just perfect on planet X, the best thing that could happen to him (planet x is one of my favorite bands).
alveeee 3 years ago 2
not only that but also his other work... and he has one thing that i think the others had less(i'm not saying they lacked it, only that they didn't have as much as Kevin does), the emotion! Look at his lyrics, listen his solos, he is so soulful and touches you in the heart!
GazellePearl 3 years ago 5
Yeah that's it!, Kevin Moore was perfect for DT. Emotion, ambiences, the real progressive metal, magic notes, magic sounds, this is all that have not DT now...
sh4dows 3 years ago 5
EXCUSE ME BRO..........i think...KEVIN MOORE is the Key-God of the World....and no one can dare to compare him with melo-less Jordan Rudess......He is gud...But only on speed....

he is leaving in Turkey now.

Close your eyes and listen. It sounds no different from Jordan Rudess. Both are great.

greater than jr;) solo composition
berkoqq 3 years ago 3
The greatest songwriter that DT has ever had. Kevin is one of the most talented musicians in last years. A few notes, not Jordan's crazy solos, but something perfect, original sounds, feeling...
Sanjuu 4 years ago 10
Yep. And make sure you give Derek credit, though; he did a good job following in Moore's footsteps, even if he's more of a fusion-type keyboardist and not so much a melodic/progressive writer. Rudess is just too out there IMO.

both jordan and kevin are different yet amazing in their own ways! But Jordan gave a whole new life to Dream Theater when Scenes From A Memory came out their torubles really ended! And Jodan had alot of input in that! But Kevin was amazing no doubt both are great!
immortalsoloist 4 years ago 2
Agreed! The band was going downhill at some point and it was Jordan Rudess who saved them from it. Without Jordan, there would have been no more Dream Theater - because Portnoy was close to leaving at that point.
SythrielDedrine 4 years ago
Maybe, but I like Falling Into Infinity more than anything Dream Theater's done with JR, with the exception of maybe SFAM.
kalanhai 3 years ago
Uh, Falling into infinity was with Derek Sherinian...so, yeah.
lukethexjess2 3 years ago
Let me clarify for you...He said "the band was going downhill...and rudess saved them from it." I don't think, from a musical perspective, the band was going downhill, because they were making great albums up till the time Jordan arrived (including F.I.I). In my opinion, they aren't making very good albums now.
kalanhai 3 years ago

Chefkey 4 years ago 3
Check out Chroma Key, he has some great albums with them, its definitely not a waste of talent.

dudu0607 4 years ago 2
I think Jordan Ruddess is a technical wizard! But Kevein Moore knew how to write much better Melodies. He used harmonic minor and modes with repetition that unified the music. Jordans music is atonal. The tonal center moves too far away from the tonic and I do not knwo what the fuck key he is in. What I am am saying for you non technical heads is that I like Kevin Better!!!!! and dats dat. POOP MAMMA
