A Kevlar helmet will only protect you from fragmentation and pistol rounds anyway. Even a non-armor piercing rifle round can penetrate military helmets (if they don't the kinetic energy will snap your neck). Since they were way out in the open, outside the range of RPGs and subsonic rounds, I could see it as excusable for him to take off his helmet to cool down. If they were rolling he would need it to protect against IEDs, but they were stationary.
