My guess is the the bolt caused a circuit to fail and the signal was designed to go into a safe mode in such an event

Well I was lookin out the glass door lookin at the storm, then this big bolt of lightning struck the RR tracks, but I only recorded the crossing malfunction cause of the lightning

i seen lightning strike a transformer once & it went Boom! the whole town went dark

yep, its kind of funny how this happens, there was a storm here and the lighting struck really close (like a quarter of a mile away) and the gates on the BNSF went down and then went back up
