I know of one convent where the sisters slept in the basement, giving up their beds to Jewish refugees."

The pope, wealthiest and most powerfull man in the world was only able to save .2% of jews in a period of 6 years. @metapaneco12 I don't know the percentage of Jews saved. Raw numbers we're talking about 850,000 souls (Britannica Encyclopedia). The Catholic Church did more and saved more Jewish souls than any other Christian religion or country. Countries did not go to war to end the Holocaust, went to war to defeat Germany, but ending the Holocaust was a secondary "objective." Just like the North didn't go to war to end slavery, went to war to preserve the Union and ending slavery was a secondary result.

Look what happened when ONE Jew killed ONE German. The pope knew that if he "made a lot of noise" or "rocked the boat" too much, the Nazis would've increased the intensity of the persecution. So he kind of "worked behind the scenes" if you will. One could always ask why he didn't do more. But who else could've done more?
