  • The Shrine has for years been the largest Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere. I wonder though, if the new, and abominably modern L. A. Cathedral is larger. I have no real numbers, but reading beween the lines, it seems it would nave a ground area of about 90,000 square feet, making it the 2nd largest church in the Western Hemisphere. Can anyone tell me if that's so?

BTW, fantastic posting, as always from you. Thanks ever so much!

  • @trompettechamade1 Isn't the L. A. Cathedral where Ned Tipton is currently organist/choir master?

  • @Mackaronni As far as I know, Soriano is the organist at LA. However, my information may be outdated.

  • I think he is better than Scott Dettra..

  • bombarde 1701a: You can get Dr. Masons recording by contacting her thru the University of Michigans Music web site. it is included in her her book reflections that she published for her 50th year at Michigan.Just google Marily Mason.. I think it cost $50 for the book and CD and well worth the money. B

  • @fourniturev I went to the U Mich web site but could not find the CD anywhere. I also tried emailing Dr. Mason but no reply yet. DO you have a number I can call or an address I can write to to get it? Thanks. I have been looking for it for decades!

  • got to play it it was an honor since hardly anyone does

  • WOW! AMAZING! Thanks for sharing this. That trumpet at the beginning is brilliant! And immaculately played as one can expect from Jeremy.

  • 2:22 WHOA!!! haven't heard that before. I must try that.

    {check out my channel ;o)}

  • never heard an organ like this anywhere else. a. We all long for an organ like this in our houses and churches, and as for 3:29, an organ that one can really ascocaite with the power of god, loved to have been there when it was played.

  • Goulding and Wood Rebuilt this organ in 2000. It is their opus 34.

  • Jeremy was treated very badly, and sacked with no notice because his extemporising voluntary was 20 secs too long!

  • Yes it was a shame...but he's got a good gig up in Baltimore now!

  • I'm pleased for him. No decent organist should ever be trreated like he was!

  • Agree wholeheartedly, no musician should ever treated like that.

  • Such a shame he's no longer there...

  • I've heard thru the grapevine (& verified it from the church's web site) that he's interim (at least thru Easter) music director @ Old St. Paul's Cathedral in Baltimore.

  • @a55b47 Old St. Paul's Episcopal, but he left there as well, Jon Brooks is currently at OSP's

  • Why exactly is it that he is gone? I can't seem to find out anywhere.

  • @chamade16 He's now an Artist in Residence at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Washington, D.C. (a.k.a the Washington National Cathedral). Notice that together make up the Ecclesiatical version of Peter, Paul, and Mary! :-)

  • @chamade16 - He is now artist-in-residence at Washington National Cathedral.

  • Earth-shattering!

  • This is probably Moller's most grand organs. Both the Chancel and Gallery Organs are great! The best CD from the Shrine is called "An Organ Pilgrimage". I got it at the gift shop on my last visit there. West Point is a good organ but has seen a few alterations...not to mention the organ sounds like its in a tin can. The Naval Academy organ has seen little tonal alterations, just digital additions and upgrades. I would have to say that Calvary is probably close in beauty.

  • I have several CDs of this organ...probably Moller's best! You are lucky for getting great pictures! The Gallery Organ had scaffolding when I was there so I couldn't see much, and the security guard wouldn't let me up there to take pictures...

  • Moller's best without a doubt!!! Calvary church and the West Point and Annapolis organs can't compare to this masterpiece! And their acoustics certainly can't compare to the acoustics in this wonderful church!!!

  • i agree. but isn't the USMA organ sort of a Moller?

  • Well yeah, but it's still a Moller I guess... I was just saying that this organ is better than the Moller at Calvary and the Moller at Westpoint and the Moller at Anapolis.

  • Such a classic piece - played brilliantly!

  • very good performance of this wonderful music

  • Dr. Mason recorded the Dupre "Stations of the Cross" on LPat the Shrine also, but it was never released on CD as far as I know. The other CD is included with her book Reflections. It was originally a 2 set LP.

  • Great playing. Thanks! Marilyn Mason recorded a great CD on these organs in the 1960's that is available from the University of Michigan.

  • Thanks for letting me know about this. Dr. Mason is one of the great ladies of the American organ world. I wasn't aware she had recorded at the Shrine.

  • @a55b47 I have the LP, but I would love to get a CD vesion. The first piece on the recording, shows of the Bombarde organ, including the Pontifical Trumpet, at its French Best. It's the "Sonata de Primo Tono para Organo con Trompeta Real" by Jose Lidon.

  • @a55b47 The Pontifical Trumpet also makes people snap tp atention at the first few notes! It also wakes up anyone who fell asleep during the quieter pieces! :-)

  • @fourniturev How can I get this CD?

  • @fourniturev

Wow, you Americans are incredible! We poor other countries only got CDs in the 1980s.

  • @fourniturev I tried to find it on line at UM, but no luck. I e-mailed Dr. Mason Directly asking her help in locating it. She very graciously replied, but, alas, as far as she knows, there is no CD version of that 2-LP recording. Cest dhommage!

  • @trompettechamade1 Update: she contacted me and sent me the original LPs to ransfer to disk. I have the names of some studios in Northern Virginia, but if anyone knows of someone who can do it with high quality and a reasonable (!) price, let me know. Also, if you know about any of the places listed in the yellow pages, let me know to which one(s) I should go. Thanks.

  • This is what Catholic churches are SUPPOSED to look like...and what their music is supposed to sound like. It would be nice to see guitars and tambourines banned from our Catholic churches:-)

  • I'm a brazilian catholic organist, and I totally agree with you. For long have the pipe organs been the official instruments of our Church; as the Catholic Church, this tradition must last forever.

  • The only sad part is that so many of the best organs in the world, our beautiful Cavaille Colls, are in France, a very politically secularized nation. If only we could just get them all back into Notre Dame, St. Sulpice, or St. Ouen, and show them what amazing instruments they are missing out on. Forever may the organ grace our churches.

  • I have several recordings of these organs and this is as good as any of them.

  • While I hope your response to my invitation...great video...

  • Wow! great video!

What state is this church in?

  • This church is in Washington D.C.

  • Well done, superb attacks and ligato
