The Elantra does not get 40MPG highway. Check out that data on the website 'fuelly'. Consumer watchdog has sent a letter to president Obama and to the EPA stating that you car does worse that what the EPA tests reveal, and Chevy Cruze consistently does better than what it's EPA values are. Both the Elantra and Cruze are 33MPG combined).
The Cruze gets an average of 28% better mileage than the Elantra.
Stop lying please. My mother got an Elantra, always in Eco mode, can't get more than 25MPG
Way better than a Civic?Uh its slower to 60,has vague steering feel=not fun to drive at all.Civic steering feels predictable and responsive.0-60 who cares?Well,Civic is roomier for taller rear passengers.5star all around crash safety rating and Hondas legendary reliability. That said, yes Elantra has better MPG, slightly..better exterior/interior styling, IMO; though it might look horrible in 5 years, while the civic can just blend in the background.Buy the car you like either one is a winner.
Wow motortrend actually didn't do a smear campaign on this Asian import? But of course they will play heavenly music when they review anything Chevy. How's the board of directors from Chevrolet doing? Did they buy you any vacation beach homes yet motortrend?

It'd be great if they can always show a list of their test numbers to see how they stack up against the competition. Just show it for like 2 seconds. That's all it takes. Honestly, I don't usually memorize test numbers for cars in this segment. 28.2 seconds around a course.. how does that stack up against the Civics and the Corollas? I know I can watch the other videos and write it down but I think you guys (Motortrend) can put a bit more time to come up with a list and show it to us.
@cb7pwn wondering if it is going to long haul? Mine seems to be doing well. I have 2001 Elantra with 138k miles on and the last gas mileage I checked was 35.9 mpg. I think it is fantastic. Of course I maintain my Hyundai. For most new cars, after about 5 years, they may start having gunky buildup inside the engine that reduces engine efficiency. There are good products out there you can use to keep your engine free of gunk.
@cb7pwn oh yeah under the skin and deep inside is a Hyundai...the 4th largest car company on planet earth...stupid haters like u always cry whenever Hyundai comes with yet another excellent car...wake up this is 2011. Cry me a river...

@Char2805Live lol that's a '95 second generation Elantra.
@cb7pwn It's not Mitsubishi lol. Hyundai stopped partnerships with Mitsubishi since the mid 90's. The first gen Elantra was Mitsubishi designed, but the second gen was all Hyundai.
Resale value on hyundai and kia has gone up alot in the last few years, they are no longer on the bottom of the food chain. resale value is worse on mitsubishi's , susuki, chyslers to name a few. currently hyundai is the 4th largest automaker and may take 3rd very soon.
Motor Trend, how come the Elantra's 0-60 is "leisurely" @ 9.1, but the 2012
Civic's @ 8.9 is merely "better than its predecessor"? Think the words don't matter? Read many of the comments below. Or did you really feel the 2/10ths difference? lol People, considering all variables (driver weight & skill, temperature, etc.) they're essentially the same but the Elantra gets more MPG.
@kazzemg Well, it's not quite as bad as it used to be. You may recall reading on all the blogs late last year that several Hyundai models had replaced Nissan for resale value. Resale values are likely to continue upwards too as Hyundai/Kia have improved so much. Plus Hyundai now has the "Trade-in guarantee" program. Your best bet (as with any car, really) is to keep it for a long run. In which case at least Hyundai has a great warranty (which has now been copied by a few other companies).
@reign1222 Generally speaking, all economy cars (sedans and hatchbacks) are either targeted as daily drivers for men or as all-around cars for women...
It it had a Ford, Chevy, or any other brand their would be 24 less dislikes and no nay sayers. When well people grow up and look past a name and look at the quality of the product as a whole.
This car has great value, the price is amazing for what you get. Although, don't buy this car expecting anything but the daily commuter that is great on gas. The only complaint I have after being in this car is the sluggish throttle response.
I think you lose some interior comforts in say a Civic because Honda spends on having a somewhat decent chassis and suspension so the Civic is kinda fun to drive. Not saying the Elantra is bad because c'mon seat heaters in the back seats? Thats attention to detail. Just saying the reviewers should mention that the Japanese counterparts still have something going for them.
Here are what I like about this Elantra, great styling, great gas mileage, good quality, and of course price. Even if you have a Merc or a Lexus, keeping your car in good shape for the next 10 years is indeed a daunting challenge. Mishaps are part of our lives. My point is "don't forget to see the forest" because of one odd tree.
@bsp1148 I agree that the Elantra has "great styling, great gas milage, good quality, and price." but Keeping your car in good condition is as easy as pie. Just find a good private detailer on the forums (they charge anywhere from $300- $800) and they will work on your car for about 2-3 days 8 hours a day and can actually restore the paint just as you bought it. Just go every few years and drop it off. DO NOT go to the fake detailers that take only a couple hours, such as the ones at a car wash.
okay, before i watch the video, i think motortrends intro is annoying. i do like the elantra tho. but if i get a small car i would get the mazda3. even tho i test drove the chevy cruze and liked it alot.

@nunezk12 durability/build quality. they have made a huge step forward in design and technology, but they don't have the quality of more expensive cars
@CJAEY Not really. I am mad because of your absurdity and don't call it your damn opinion you moron. Is Corolla gorgeous to you? Cmon, you are an ass.
You get navigation, climate control, push button start, steering wheel mounted controls, leather, power windows/door locks, heated seats front and back, and probably power seats too. So exactly whats the point of a mercedes or BMW? Or any luxury car in fact. Isn't this luxurious?
@DualofChaos why get a $2000 taylor if you can purchase a $100 guitar from costco? Its the steering feel and accuracy, its the super smooth power delivery, its the extra horsepower, its the more tightly tuned yet more comfortable suspension, its the grippy yet quiet tires, more comfortable seats (not all models), way better sound system, safer brakes, more brake feel, everything touch is higher quality, its quieter in the cabin, turning radius, rear view camera MUCHMORE Go drive a 70k bmw first
@DualofChaos Marketing. You can spend $300 on a burberry shirt or a third of that price and still get a decent shirt. You can spend $400 for a IPod wire from BMW, or you can pay 10% of that and still get one.
i doubt this car. bad driving dynamics, an ugly/odd look (imo), and a bad reliability record in the past. this car will have to prove itself over the next 10-20 years. just like the new focuses transmission being reported to have many problems, new tech isnt always a great thing. especially in cars meant to be more primitive yet solid. oh, and we get it people....heated rear seats, big whoop. if youre in a car, youre going somewhere, a car is transportation, not your home.
@AwesomeAlvin Perhaps you are right about the merc, but bmw and Porsches are drivers car. If you own a car for the sole reason of going from point A to B, then yes you are 100% correct, there really is no reason. However, if you want to enjoy your car, that's a different story. Precision and accuracy in terms of steering, brakes, and suspension still lacks in an Elantra. It's terribly hard to enjoy and feel safe while on the track or in the canyons in an Elantra. Like a toyota, its plain boring
@dhL17 As the price of gas squeezing our wallets ever more, perhaps just going from A to B dependably means everything these days. The idea of having fun behind a wheel is indeed very dangerous and juvenile for so many reasons we all know. Elantra was not designed for sporty driving if you did not know.
@bsp1148 Did you even read what Alvin said? He stated the the price of BMWs are high only because they can be, not because it's a better car. I stated that the Elantra is cheaper because it is only designed to go from point A to B, while the BMW is made for much more, such as driver feedback and balance, which is only really needed for enjoyment. If professional closed course track racing is juvenile, then basket/football is for uneducated and aggressive men.fail. Who ever said elantra = sporty?
@dhL17 I have read. Perhaps you just wanted to say, you wish Elantra had more balance and driver feed back. Once again, you are looking for gold in a silver mine. Competitors such as Toyota and Honda are very nervous and we can see why.
@bsp1148 Nope, not at all. I am not looking for gold in a silver mine haha. What I am saying is that BMW is worth the price, just as the Elantra is worth the price. If anyone asks what car should be purchase under 19k, I always recommend the Elantra. However to state that BMW's are only expensive because of brand name, is ignorant. There are legitimate reasons why BMW's are worth more, which I stated in my previous posts. Yes I agree that Honda and Toyota should be very nervious of Hyundai haha.
@allstarhs since when was this car suppost to be fast? Anything that does 0-60 in more than 6 seconds is slow as all hell and the way sport cars are being produced now that number will drop to 5.5 being slow. This car is an awesome buy for the money. The Focus is nice no doubt, but it is pretty expensive when loaded with the same features this car has. I could care less about my commuter being fast or fun to drive, I have a sports car already, I don't need 2.
I cant decide between the focus or this. This car has more affordable options over the focus but yet, to me, the focus (hatchback) looks nicer - in and out.
well known luxury cars sale you the brand. many luxuries do not cost alot. its like a piece of crappy expensive art. its only expensive because some famous artist made it.
I test drove this the Corolla, the Civic, and the Mazda 3. The hyundai is no doubt better than all of them with interior packaging, and the transmission is great for a car this price. One thing is, its not that fun to drive.
Just because they made the looks of these cars more modern, doesn't mean they are as reliable. Buying a car like this is basically like buying designer shoes, and going hiking with them.. They will fall apart with time.
BIG BIG BIG THREAT TO the American compact segment, but it seems like Koreans really know their small cars, look at this or the Chevy Cruze. But, Corolla and the Civic seems to be quiet, for now.
it looks nice is very cheap but who will buy something like this seriously where i live the only hyundai you see is that tugan thing that ricers love to put fart cannons on
I've already seen quite a few of these on the road. Just goes to show how good it is already. Nice job! Not quite a fun car, but definitely a great family/commuter car.
How can u comprae hyndai watebvr u call it to a bmw or mrdzbenz... those hyndays loose value faster then a used pair of nikes.... never the less the xrappy engine that give out all the problems possible.
@mike88g1 I hate to be the bearer of bad news but late model Hyundais are holding their value very well these days. As for a comparison to BMW and Mercedes, the Genesis and Equus are standing up pretty well to the task.
Metal is metal , glass is glass , rubber is rubber , this hands down is an exceptional buy ... y pay for a badge? perception is reality so y pay more ?
My brother just purchased a 2011 Limited Elantra. Its really nice, especially from the interior, you would NEVER know its a Hyundai. It has rear heated seats, and a backup camera. its awesome!
Seriously... the new Elantra is much improved but why can't you get a power drivers seat or dual zone auto temp control? I would never use the heated rear seats so thats just a throw away expense for me. The Focus has a way nicer interior plus you can get it in hatch form... and the outside looks better. This looks like it appeals to womem alot and thats fine if you are a girl but I'll take the more gender neutral and sleek styling of the Focus.
They can afford to put more quality into the car because their assembly line employee's aren't ridiculously overpaid for doing menial tasks. The Chevy Cruze interior is sad in comparison to this car. My mom has been a loyal GM driver all her life, but she just couldn't settle for the poor quality and higher price of a Cruze with fewer options when compared to the Elantra.
GM needs to step up and use some higher quality materials inside the car. The fabric they use on the dash is pathetic!
Just proves that it doesn't cost a lot to add those "luxury" features that other car manufacturers charge an arm and a leg for! This is why a $300 heated seats option package in a Hyundai costs $1500 in a BMW - for the same exact option.
@hazemvirus Not comparing a BMW to a Hyundai. I'm comparing the cost of an option. Just like power windows on a Hyundai shouldn't cost more than power windows on a BMW (when that was an option). Understand before you comment.
@mail22 Agreed! Most European cars options list easily adds 10 to 40 thousands more to the based model's price. What People don't realize is that they are paying extra for a "BMW" or an "AUDI" badge with the respective company's supposed superior quality in the back of their minds. The whole industry is catching up to European standards in terms of quality and comfort. With the Economy shrinking in the US, I think more people will go after alternatives like Hyundai.
Yes, but that is a good reason. They have earned their name. I fell in love with BMW when I saw the 750iL in Tomorrow Never Dies. To this day, the E38 7 Series will always be my favorite car. Yes, they are expensive, and that is why I would never buy a new one. Used ones are a steal.
@mail22 it comes down to brand names, at the end of the day a Hyundai with heated seats is still a Hyundai, now a BMW on the other hand is a freaking BMW, your car shows how much money the driver has. And girls look at it all.
@RussMusiq1 Very likely because car manufacturers are really more like car assemblers. Parts may be designed by Chrysler or Porsche, but they're actually made by suppliers (just like computers, clothes, etc.)
@mail22 not quite. you pay those prices for features with mostly the same outcome. BMW heated seats are definitely much higher quality and work much better than hyundai ones. theres a huge difference in quality
Non matter how much we dis this car Hyundai has come a long way.

i doubt this car. bad driving dynamics, an ugly/odd look (imo), and a bad reliability record in the past. this car will have to prove itself over the next 10-20 years. just like the new focuses transmission being reported to have many problems, new tech isnt always a great thing. especially in cars meant to be more primitive yet solid. oh, and we get it people....heated rear seats, big whoop. if youre in a car, youre going somewhere, a car is transportation, not your home.

@circa73skater I disagree, It IS my second home on the road.

Luxury cars (BMW, Merc ...) cost that much because they can. No other reason.
AwesomeAlvin 9 months ago
@AwesomeAlvin Perhaps you are right about the merc, but bmw and Porsches are drivers car. If you own a car for the sole reason of going from point A to B, then yes you are 100% correct, there really is no reason. However, if you want to enjoy your car, that's a different story. Precision and accuracy in terms of steering, brakes, and suspension still lacks in an Elantra. It's terribly hard to enjoy and feel safe while on the track or in the canyons in an Elantra. Like a toyota, its plain boring
dhL17 9 months ago
@dhL17 As the price of gas squeezing our wallets ever more, perhaps just going from A to B dependably means everything these days. The idea of having fun behind a wheel is indeed very dangerous and juvenile for so many reasons we all know. Elantra was not designed for sporty driving if you did not know.
bsp1148 9 months ago
@bsp1148 Did you even read what Alvin said? He stated the the price of BMWs are high only because they can be, not because it's a better car. I stated that the Elantra is cheaper because it is only designed to go from point A to B, while the BMW is made for much more, such as driver feedback and balance, which is only really needed for enjoyment. If professional closed course track racing is juvenile, then basket/football is for uneducated and aggressive men.fail. Who ever said elantra = sporty?
dhL17 9 months ago
@dhL17 I have read. Perhaps you just wanted to say, you wish Elantra had more balance and driver feed back. Once again, you are looking for gold in a silver mine. Competitors such as Toyota and Honda are very nervous and we can see why.
bsp1148 9 months ago
@bsp1148 Nope, not at all. I am not looking for gold in a silver mine haha. What I am saying is that BMW is worth the price, just as the Elantra is worth the price. If anyone asks what car should be purchase under 19k, I always recommend the Elantra. However to state that BMW's are only expensive because of brand name, is ignorant. There are legitimate reasons why BMW's are worth more, which I stated in my previous posts. Yes I agree that Honda and Toyota should be very nervious of Hyundai haha.

Two things I noticed:
1. "...had some less than stellar products in the past..." I see what you did there. ;)
2. '...more curves than a Tim Horton's cruller..." You guys have Timmy Ho's down there? I guess I learn something new every day. :)

Looks good but the Focus>This.
Maybe next time they can study the Focus' ride&handling and make something more robust...not just something that looks good
Also WTF at the acceleration? All new engine and trans and still so slow
allstarhs 9 months ago
@allstarhs since when was this car suppost to be fast? Anything that does 0-60 in more than 6 seconds is slow as all hell and the way sport cars are being produced now that number will drop to 5.5 being slow. This car is an awesome buy for the money. The Focus is nice no doubt, but it is pretty expensive when loaded with the same features this car has. I could care less about my commuter being fast or fun to drive, I have a sports car already, I don't need 2.
psmTARDCORE 9 months ago
@allstarhs fyi the focus sucks nuts compared to any other non-gm compact car and this isnt a sportscar...
GOcgyFLAMESgo 9 months ago
I cant decide between the focus or this. This car has more affordable options over the focus but yet, to me, the focus (hatchback) looks nicer - in and out.

well known luxury cars sale you the brand. many luxuries do not cost alot. its like a piece of crappy expensive art. its only expensive because some famous artist made it.
routhoula 9 months ago
I test drove this the Corolla, the Civic, and the Mazda 3. The hyundai is no doubt better than all of them with interior packaging, and the transmission is great for a car this price. One thing is, its not that fun to drive.
idiotsawvfr5 9 months ago
Just because they made the looks of these cars more modern, doesn't mean they are as reliable. Buying a car like this is basically like buying designer shoes, and going hiking with them.. They will fall apart with time.

BIG BIG BIG THREAT TO the American compact segment, but it seems like Koreans really know their small cars, look at this or the Chevy Cruze. But, Corolla and the Civic seems to be quiet, for now.

My brother just purchased a 2011 Limited Elantra. Its really nice, especially from the interior, you would NEVER know its a Hyundai. It has rear heated seats, and a backup camera. its awesome!
rally240 9 months ago
Seriously... the new Elantra is much improved but why can't you get a power drivers seat or dual zone auto temp control? I would never use the heated rear seats so thats just a throw away expense for me. The Focus has a way nicer interior plus you can get it in hatch form... and the outside looks better. This looks like it appeals to womem alot and thats fine if you are a girl but I'll take the more gender neutral and sleek styling of the Focus.
xoquixxoqafxo 9 months ago 2
They can afford to put more quality into the car because their assembly line employee's aren't ridiculously overpaid for doing menial tasks. The Chevy Cruze interior is sad in comparison to this car. My mom has been a loyal GM driver all her life, but she just couldn't settle for the poor quality and higher price of a Cruze with fewer options when compared to the Elantra.
GM needs to step up and use some higher quality materials inside the car. The fabric they use on the dash is pathetic!
Revomad1 9 months ago
Just proves that it doesn't cost a lot to add those "luxury" features that other car manufacturers charge an arm and a leg for! This is why a $300 heated seats option package in a Hyundai costs $1500 in a BMW - for the same exact option.
mail22 9 months ago 61
@mail22 dudegrow up you cant compare hyundai to BMW
hazemvirus 9 months ago
@hazemvirus Not comparing a BMW to a Hyundai. I'm comparing the cost of an option. Just like power windows on a Hyundai shouldn't cost more than power windows on a BMW (when that was an option). Understand before you comment.
mail22 9 months ago 4
@mail22 Yep, rather sell it for the feature itself... not just the BMW brand!
yumyumluckycharms 9 months ago
@mail22 Agreed! Most European cars options list easily adds 10 to 40 thousands more to the based model's price. What People don't realize is that they are paying extra for a "BMW" or an "AUDI" badge with the respective company's supposed superior quality in the back of their minds. The whole industry is catching up to European standards in terms of quality and comfort. With the Economy shrinking in the US, I think more people will go after alternatives like Hyundai.
greenfaction4 9 months ago
@mail22 if you buy BMW, you pay just mark on the hood... this is main reason
uroswolf 9 months ago
Yes, but that is a good reason. They have earned their name. I fell in love with BMW when I saw the 750iL in Tomorrow Never Dies. To this day, the E38 7 Series will always be my favorite car. Yes, they are expensive, and that is why I would never buy a new one. Used ones are a steal.
BusterBunker 9 months ago
@mail22 it comes down to brand names, at the end of the day a Hyundai with heated seats is still a Hyundai, now a BMW on the other hand is a freaking BMW, your car shows how much money the driver has. And girls look at it all.
Jude0o 9 months ago
@mail22 I read that the $ difference when it comes to material quality between Chrysler 200 and Porche is around $200-$250 for the manufacturer.
RussMusiq1 9 months ago
@RussMusiq1 Very likely because car manufacturers are really more like car assemblers. Parts may be designed by Chrysler or Porsche, but they're actually made by suppliers (just like computers, clothes, etc.)
mail22 9 months ago
@mail22 not quite. you pay those prices for features with mostly the same outcome. BMW heated seats are definitely much higher quality and work much better than hyundai ones. theres a huge difference in quality
