The future Courtney Benedict tells us:
"He called me up one day, out of the blue; this was, a while after Jack died. He said he had this crazy idea to run for Congress"
Therefore, Bobby becomes the President, as Jack is dead before he begins his political career. A spoiler alert: we will actually later learn that Bobby served out Jack's term in Congress after he dies.
@Awesomex80s Six years is nothing though once you are older than thirty . It only really makes a difference if one person in a couple is like in their twenties when the other is in their teens. (18 when one is 24 for example)

@emericcson123 the only reason that I can come up with for this show having been canceled so long ago was because of the grace storyline and her boyfriend which ended up detracting from the storyline of the two brothers. her character started dominating the storyline, making the show more about her and less about jack and bobby, at least that is what I remember from when I was watching this show when it was on air.
@cuhamm hmmm...i heard it was so they could have a 40th season of 7th heaven, at least that's what people commented, on a later episode of "Jack of Bobby" (i think episode 5, part1) on Youtube

well, the first episode is when we learn that Jack died young, but it wasn't until the last episode did we learn how Jack died.
