when you talk about islam especially in a historical context you have to take into account the time. im not Muslim and i dont claim its perfect. but the reality is that at the time compared to other civilization especially western culture islamic laws were A LOT more tolerant. infact the west was the worst and most primitive civilization during the middle ages . e.g Under islamic law women had rights (as limited as they were), whereas in europe women had zero rights and were treated as poverty.
That are just victorian myths, women in medieval europe had almost as much rights as men (varying according to region), when the middle ages progressed and at the renaissance, when roman law was rediscovered were women very restricted in their legal position.

While I respect many Muslims as individual people, after reading the Qur'an, Sira, and the Hadiths, I have come to understand that Muhammad, while charasmatic, was a harsh man, and Islam is not a religion I would ever, ever want.

when you talk about islam especially in a historical context you have to take into account the time. im not Muslim and i dont claim its perfect. but the reality is that at the time compared to other civilization especially western culture islamic laws were A LOT more tolerant. infact the west was the worst and most primitive civilization during the middle ages . e.g Under islamic law women had rights (as limited as they were), whereas in europe women had zero rights and were treated as poverty.

That are just victorian myths, women in medieval europe had almost as much rights as men (varying according to region), when the middle ages progressed and at the renaissance, when roman law was rediscovered were women very restricted in their legal position.

@wodanbruel actually there are not victorian myths but reality. in roman law women were property of the husband and could be sentenced to death by their husband. if a women was murdered the husband was compensated by money depending on the age and fertility of the women, the same way a horse was treated. you obviously know nothing about history ...this is hist 101

Yes in ROMAN law were they the property of the husband, and the treatment of men and women in case of murder was the same, if you killed a woman you had to pay weregild, the same with a male victim, this varied according to region (as I mentioned) in Medieval England a woman was worth half a man and in the case of regions in western-germany en eastern-france the weregild of a woman was TWICE that of a man.

@fsem10 Question: Is Islamic law, Sharia, different, now, then it was at the time of the M. Ages? You can't say it was, can you, because it is based on the Koran, Hadith, etc., which are unchanging. Now, compare Sharia to modern western civilization: it, the former, is abysmal (Look at Iran and S. Arabia, 2 countries that most faithful apply it.). It says nothing that European law may have been worse at one time and what is tolerant, AT ALL, about being a dhimmi in any time period?

Slavery was REINTRODUCED to the Europeans circa 1450 by Muslims in north africa, first to the Portugese then to Spanish and Dutch. so after 1000 years of no slavery, europe had slavery again thanks to Islam. Well, spend so time with Hitchens and you'll never again say he's "pretending" to be an atheist... actually he takes it a step further, he's not just an atheist but an anti-theist: one who doesn't even wish that there was a god. There is a plethora of videos of Hitchens skewering Judaism, and also many of him debating and verbally chastising Rabbi's and the like, and he's very critical of the "settlers on the west bank" as he calls them.
