They are still an amazing group. The sax player turned out not be such a slouch after all. That's Mark Rivera right before he joined Billy Joel in 1982 (and he's been with him 29 years and counting) plus he's served as the musical director for Ringo Starr's All Starr Band since 1992 as well.
I went to this tour as a kid. War Memorial in Lou's hometown, Rochester, NY. It was amazing. He lives up on the lake in one of those large beautiful houses. Saw him at the grocery store about two years ago, but several other people recognized him and I couldn't even say Hello. He was buying health food in the same isle as me...;) I think he got some of those oatmeal snacks. ;)
Great story. I saw them when they rolled through the bay area. . February, 1982, at the Cow Palace, just south of San Francisco. I remember that the first 2 shows sold out in less than an hour and the promoters added a 3rd and a 4th. At that point, they had the #1 LP in the country, the #1 song in the country and were probably the most popular rock band in the world. And I thought to myself, "these guys are at the top of their game." And I think I might have been right.
Ya the studio sax work was awesome. One of the Hall & Oates guys seems to have parachuted into this video and start wailing away senselessly, not as good sounding imho.
@vpnpeon Yeah, seems like Junior Walker's sound in the studio is hard for other sax players to duplicate. I don't care what the guy's resume is on sax here. He made a complete mess of the notes. Didn't hit the right ones or hold them long enough. Botched. In music, like in literature, there is no acceptable second rank. It's either first rate or garbage. Our ears can tell. This sax is complete garbage. I'd rather hear Taylor Hicks play the harmonica on it. He's better.

This sounds very good. But the original had the incomparable soul saxophonist Junior Waler doing the solo (wonderfully)!
